Can Eveland and Smith Repeat Low ERAs?
I did a mini-study to see how difficult it is to post a sub-4.50 ERA with a sub-1.5 K/BB ratio. Answer: difficult.
But then I also took a look at the pitchers who have done it from 2004 through 2007 to see if they could back it up the next year. Answer: basically no, at least not without improving their skills.
Why is this relevant? Because Dana Eveland and Greg Smith are two of the three starters who are succeeding with unimpressive K/BB ratios this year. Summary: Eveland is the better bet, thanks to a very good GB%.

Who's the third starter? Is he on the A's or another team?
And, Is this a campaign for trading them both?
My guess:
A’s: Braden
Other team: Gavin Floyd
I see the future. I see cake.
The third guy is Edwin Jackson, and you can be sure his sub-4.00 ERA and 1.3 K/BB are a hot topic at draysbay
all three are young guys and certainly have room to improve, and Eveland’s ERA is probably right where it should be considering Oakland’s park and fielding ability.
