DLD 9/9/08 Good bye Mike Sweeney
According to Susan Slusser, the A's have released Mike Sweeney. This must mean they needed the 40 man spot for someone. I wonder if Jeff Baisley will be making his major league debut in Detroit.
Mike Sweeney came to Oakland last spring to be a right-handed DH and possibly a key part of the A's puzzle. But bad knees did him in and the A's puzzle never came together. Now Sweeney is being released.
A's assistant general manager David Forst confirmed the transaction to The Chronicle's Susan Slusser today.

... 1 comment in a DLD at 10pm?
That’s truly unfortunate.

bizarre
600 comments in a trade thread, and now 3 in a DLD?
What’s also bizarre is that I’m up at 3 a.m. Bleh.

I Feel So Sick
The CCT mentioned that Sweeney was about to hit an incentive by remaining on the active roster… if so, the A’s response that Sweeney could have continued to be paid by going on the 60-day DL was somewhat disingenuous.
He deserved better.

He was toast
I saw him slide at second over the weekend. It was not pretty. He sort of – ran as fast as he could, dropped towards the bag at the last second, caught his leg in a funky position and got up like a 90 year old rising from a long nap. Done is done.

Speaking of Mike and who he replaced
Did anyone catch Dan Johnson’s game-tying HR off Papelbon last night after getting called up yesterday? For some reason, I can get this vid to play for me, so I can’t tell how happy Band Camp looked …

The situation kinda reminded me of Hatteberg’s walkoff during the Streak.

That was pretty
And nice to watch as Kotsay was chasing after it for the Sox.

Sick of the A's
I’ve put up with a lot from the front office of this team and have come to their defense on many occasions, but this just bites. Would it be so horrible to let Mike Sweeney, one of the classiest guys in the game, try and finish his career with 200 HRs? And releasing him a few days before his incentive kicks in is downright filthy. Shame on you, Billy Beane.
I’ve been a loyal fan for many years, and I honestly understand the business decisions behind some of the heartbreaking trades and releases the A’s have made. But this is downright petty. I’m seriously considering whether I can be a season ticket holder in good conscience next year.

The test will be whether he gets picked up by anyone else this year,
which is unlikely. The Front Office offered to put him on the 60 day DL so he’d get his bonus regardless. It was a business decision to free up a 40 man roster spot.

The overreaction here is almost comical
The A’s release a player who is:
1. a veteran
2. not very good anymore
3. on an expiring one-year deal
4. which was NON-GUARANTEED entering the season
5. won’t bring back comp picks
6. obviously less than 100%
7. has been on the DL most of the season
8. is holding a roster spot that could be used by a prospect who needs to be evaluated
and somehow it’s some kind of crime against humanity?
I mean, seriously, the holier than thou tone? Stuff it. Mike Sweeney made about $450,000 this season for doing very little to help the A’s win baseball games. On the list of human tragedies of the present day, you’ll excuse me for ranking this one pretty goddamned low.

Now I Understand...
why everyone thinks you’re an asshole. There’s a little something called thinking before you hit the Post button. Honestly Paul, you should try it sometime.
You don’t even know me, so don’t suggest I have some kind of holier than thou attitude. As a people manager, I believe in something called integrity when it comes to dealing with employees. It amounts to treating people with respect and dignity and not just always looking at the bottom line. You think a move like this doesn’t hurt the A’s in the long run? When we eventually have a prospect worth keeping and the A’s go to sign him, there’s a strong likelihood he’s going to think back on the way the A’s treat their human resources with the same respect as their equipment, and if a similar deal is on the table from another team that has treated their employees better (and face it, most teams have), who do you think he’ll sign with? Sweeney alluded to this fact in the article about his release; the A’s are building a reputation on being a team so cheap, they treat their employees like garbage. Once you’ve built a reputation like that, what does that do to your team in the long run? It eats away at the morale, and the A’s have little of that left anyway.
Baseball, of all sports, is one that honors tradition. It is the reason we can be so moved to see a relief pitcher break a 100 year old record. Players who have played hard, played fair, and contributed to making the game great deserve to be treated with respect. So when a guy who may never be a HOF player but played the game right is 1 home run short of 200 in what is most likely his final season in the game is on your team, you should let him play it out, for the respect of the tradition of the game.
By the way, you’re the one calling this a crime against humanity, not me. So once again Paul, don’t put words in my mouth because you don’t even know me.

You're Right and I'm Sorry
It was foolish of me to think that a person like you who clearly has no respect for the opinions of people who disagree with him would understand the concept of showing respect for employees.
The crime of the Internet is that it allows people like you to disrespect others by devaluing their opinions and what basically amounts to bullying. Most of us outgrew that kind of behavior when we graduated from elementary school. Take AN offline and into a sports bar environment and many of the comments you have made here would garner you a broken nose. Fortunately for you, that will never happen because the Internet provides you with a layer of protection and some amount of anonymity. But just because you’re protected doesn’t excuse your behavior.
I’m not saying this for your benefit Paul because if you can’t handle an opinion of another person with a level of maturity, surely you can’t handle any criticism directed at yourself. I’m simply saying this for the benefit of others because by your responses to me, you validate my point. I hope people will see our interaction here and realize it’s worthless to try and have a constructive conversation with you because you will always revert to name calling and condescension.
Now there is really no point in continuing because you have made my point. Thank you.

Oh, MaEl. :(
Ellis done for season, says SuSlu — torn labrum in his right shoulder.
Ellis said he wasn’t certain if he would need surgery to repair the damage, but was told this injury was not related to the right shoulder injury that caused him to miss the 2004 season.
Well, that’s good, I guess…. blah.
