Open Game Thread: Game 143 - A's at Detroit

Oakland Athletics at Detroit Tigers, Sep 8, 2008 4:05 PM PDT

The season is winding down as there are only 20 games left in the 2008 campaign.  19 if the cancelled game against KC isn't rescheduled.

It's been fun to watch guys like tonight's starter Gio Gonzalez and get a glimpse as to what he's going to be.  He has had some great innings so far, but he's also had the wheels come completely off at times.  He's giving up too many walks and yet, he's still averaging a strikeout per inning despite his ridiculously high 7.18 ERA.  Just a reminder though...Mark Mulder had a 5.44 ERA during his first season with the A's.  I think that Gonzalez will get better.

I normally like to see the pitcher against batter stats but because the A's are playing so many young kids, the history just isn't there so it isn't as relevant.  Gonzalez stats so far are:

W-L G GS CG SHO SV BS IP H R ER HR BB K ERA WHIP
2008 - Gio Gonzalez 1-3 6 6 0 0 0 0 26.1 25 25 21 6 22 27 7.18 1.78

The WHIP clearly needs to come way down but that seems to indicate to me that he's struggling locating his pitches and getting some good command.  The Tigers are a very good right-handed heavy ball club, so I imagine this could be another rough outing for Gio.  Hopefully not, but we shall see.

The Tigers start Zach Miner.  He's a reliever turn starter and has seen his ERA almost a run higher as a starter than as a reliever.  He's only pitched once against the A's this year and he went 1 and 2/3 innings and allowed one hit and two walks but no runs.

Here are his stats:

W-L G GS CG SHO SV BS IP H R ER HR BB K ERA WHIP
2008 - Zach Miner 8-4 41 9 0 0 0 3 94.1 92 43 39 8 38 48 3.72 1.38

The lineups look like this:

LET'S GO A'S!!!!!!!

39 pitches, two runs, and not just “take, take, take” – lots of good swings and good takes combined.

I think that Ellis will accept arbitration.

Especially with that injury really dropping his value, he won’t get much of a deal anywhere else. Accept arbi, get his value up, then go sign that multiyear deal somewhere else.

He should not even be learning in the majors because he is currently very bad.

by Trainman on Sep 8, 2008 4:41 PM PDT up reply actions

The injuries kind of demanded that we bring him up

And he was pitching well in Triple-A. Would you rather have run DiNardo out there the rest of the year?

Yes

by MrIncognito on Sep 8, 2008 4:59 PM PDT up reply actions

I agree the injuries caused this

I did not like the high walk totals in the minors but was still excited to see him.

He has been hammered with the longball and it certainly is not doing his confidence any good getting plastered all over the park.

His fastball has a Barry Zito look to it. Would be nice if he could locate it better of course and it would be nice if he can find a couple of MPH on it in the off season

Good and bad injury news:
The good news is that All-Star right-hander Justin Duchscherer, who hasn’t pitched since leaving an Aug. 18 game in Minnesota with soreness in his surgically repaired right hip, was told by his Tennessee-based surgeon that pitching again this year isn’t out of the question.

The bad news is that second baseman Mark Ellis, who has played in just two games since injuring his right shoulder in that same August series against the Twins, left the team Sunday to fly back to the Bay Area for an MRI.

I had...

half a taco, half a chicken finger with honey and bbq sauce, a biscuit with butter, 2 little bags of smartfood, 3 funsize hersheys, aaand… some motrins.

I am having 6 chicken strips and french fries

because I am too lazy to cook

I've been lazy too.

I had gummy bears for dinner last night, and nothing else.

I made banana chocolate chip scones today.

They’re a little overdone, and I forgot to grease the pan, but it’s better than last time, when they were completely underdone and almost entirely dough. Third time will be the charm, I suppose…

I recently tried my hand at scone making.

They turned out better than I thought they would. They had fresh fruit packed inside. I thought they were too done on the bottom because I didn’t have parchment paper, but they were just right.

Absotively right.

Also, you can see his little pointy nose sticking out.
And he always wore Nike cleats, unlike Ryan who wears Adidas.

It doesn’t look like any normal hitter – meaning it must be a pitcher.
If the pitcher is batting, it can’t be a reliever.

I ask because Davis is up to 87. When you factor in his crazy range in the outfield, that makes him useful I’d expect.
