Open Game Thread: Game 143 - A's at Detroit
Oakland Athletics at Detroit Tigers, Sep 8, 2008 4:05 PM PDT
The season is winding down as there are only 20 games left in the 2008 campaign. 19 if the cancelled game against KC isn't rescheduled.
It's been fun to watch guys like tonight's starter Gio Gonzalez and get a glimpse as to what he's going to be. He has had some great innings so far, but he's also had the wheels come completely off at times. He's giving up too many walks and yet, he's still averaging a strikeout per inning despite his ridiculously high 7.18 ERA. Just a reminder though...Mark Mulder had a 5.44 ERA during his first season with the A's. I think that Gonzalez will get better.
I normally like to see the pitcher against batter stats but because the A's are playing so many young kids, the history just isn't there so it isn't as relevant. Gonzalez stats so far are:
The WHIP clearly needs to come way down but that seems to indicate to me that he's struggling locating his pitches and getting some good command. The Tigers are a very good right-handed heavy ball club, so I imagine this could be another rough outing for Gio. Hopefully not, but we shall see.
The Tigers start Zach Miner. He's a reliever turn starter and has seen his ERA almost a run higher as a starter than as a reliever. He's only pitched once against the A's this year and he went 1 and 2/3 innings and allowed one hit and two walks but no runs.
Here are his stats:
The lineups look like this:
LET'S GO A'S!!!!!!!

Poppy, God bless her...
made it a DVD for me. I watch it and LOLed my ass off.
But he came back. And there was much rejoicing.
Aw, how nice of her
I happened to notice Ry Ry’s tattoo for the first time peeking out from under his sleeve in that show – but later that day was when Z released those tattoo shots of him, so I didn’t get much advance notice after all.
Not unless you are RyRy.
Then you’d REALLY rock, since you’d be blogging from the dugout.
But he came back. And there was much rejoicing.
I still believe in Barton

PS: The canceled game was against Baltimore, not KC ;-P

Huge payroll and high expectations in Detroit.
Big dissapointment this year.

It's still raining here.
And it’s less than 60 degrees. It’s like October.
But he came back. And there was much rejoicing.
That was one of the best ABs I've seen an A's player have all year

They had a big (7-8) game losing streak mid season but rebounded.
I hope they can win. If they get the WC, I hope they clean out the Halos.
They have Longoria back now.
I see the future. I see cake.
it just seems like the pressure is getting to them now, and so far they have shown
they can’t handle it.
You say Potato
I say they’re simply regressing to their pythagorean record and pundits will blame it on pressure or voodoo curses before they use a rational explanation.
Great inning of hitting for the A's
39 pitches, two runs, and not just “take, take, take” – lots of good swings and good takes combined.

ive seen nothing from EPatt
that has shown he’s capable of starting 2b in 09
he’s gotten lots of ab’s with ellis out
move onto plan B with pennington?
go back to murphy who either has shown he’s your typical AAAA player?
petit?
I think that Ellis will accept arbitration.
Especially with that injury really dropping his value, he won’t get much of a deal anywhere else. Accept arbi, get his value up, then go sign that multiyear deal somewhere else.
A’s would get him for one more year.
I see the future. I see cake.
She has that programmed in her phone...
and quicknotes it to me even before plays like that are over.

So I was emailing a friend the other day
about making cupcakes for a friend’s birthday, and every time I typed “cupcakes” I had to stop myself from capitalizing it and thinking of Blanton. AN has changed me forever…
I was looking in my stash of cards I have in my desk today...
and I found a card with a cupcake on it. I observed a moment of silence.
But he came back. And there was much rejoicing.
The future is looking good
but not for Gio at the moment.
He should not even be learning in the majors because he is currently very bad.
Big mistake bringing him up.
I hate unproductive outs and the A's are producing them at record production
The injuries kind of demanded that we bring him up
And he was pitching well in Triple-A. Would you rather have run DiNardo out there the rest of the year?
by Tyler Bleszinski on Sep 8, 2008 4:42 PM PDT up reply actions
I agree the injuries caused this
I did not like the high walk totals in the minors but was still excited to see him.
He has been hammered with the longball and it certainly is not doing his confidence any good getting plastered all over the park.
His fastball has a Barry Zito look to it. Would be nice if he could locate it better of course and it would be nice if he can find a couple of MPH on it in the off season
I hate unproductive outs and the A's are producing them at record production
Love to stick around join the all the fun
but since moving to Colorado….I have found infinite things to do in the early evening that before I only imagined.

Haha...I was guessing head injury
So, bring on Bonds! Or, not... then, bring back Langerhans!! -One won lost one
Speaking of which, what happened to Iron Man Crosby?
He’s injured right? Cos Geren wouldn’t give his precious playing time to a guy they’re trying to evaluate….that’d make too much sense.
Hmmmm...so much for an early lead.
So, bring on Bonds! Or, not... then, bring back Langerhans!! -One won lost one
THAT is certainly true.
So, bring on Bonds! Or, not... then, bring back Langerhans!! -One won lost one
Was that strip of dirt there at the beginning of the game?
Or did Kurt wear the grass down.
But he came back. And there was much rejoicing.
Giving up runs...
might be the least of Gio’s worries if he keeps hitting guys.

Blasphemy. Just blasphemy.
Outman is infinitely better looking than Lackey. Simply because he doesn’t wear an Angels uniform.
I see the future. I see cake.
Pretty well actually. Rodgers has thrown his first TD pass, and somehow not
told the fans to stick it. Oh and AD has looked spectacular.
OK
So it’s time to pull Gio from the rotation. Is DiNardo still around? Ugh.

What the fuck?
Is Gio retarded or something? Why doesn’t he just serve up that pitch on a silver platter?

The A's better start figuring out
waht’s going on with Gonzalez and quick because this the second start in a row he hasn’t lasted very long. Alright, now I really ned to go.
He is not ready for the majors

Needs to spend much more time in AAA including starting next season there.

Exactly. He's not going to fix control issues he had in the minors in the bigs.

It would be, if they were mature enough to learn from their struggles and grow during the year.
Gio hasn’t really shown us he can do that so far, Cargon is back in the minors, and Barton’s been riding a near-.650 OPS for the better part of 3 months now…

I got stuck in traffic and I think I scared some drivers while I was listening to the game. There was a lot of screaming and swearing at my radio.
Good and bad injury news:
The good news is that All-Star right-hander Justin Duchscherer, who hasn’t pitched since leaving an Aug. 18 game in Minnesota with soreness in his surgically repaired right hip, was told by his Tennessee-based surgeon that pitching again this year isn’t out of the question.
The bad news is that second baseman Mark Ellis, who has played in just two games since injuring his right shoulder in that same August series against the Twins, left the team Sunday to fly back to the Bay Area for an MRI.
Gah! I want NEED MaEl to play again this season!

Yeah, we weren't great there either - it just helped that Everton's
bench literally consisted of kids. We didn’t do much to improve in the transfer window either (what is it with me supporting poor teams?!), so that’s a worry…..especially when you consider Manchester City have joined the ranks of the uber rich.
