9/5 Minor Athletics Playoff Addition
Hey guys....its been a while. This is Dan reporting from Baltimore. I just attended last night's game where our boys were helped out by the bases loaded walk. I don't think I have experienced so much joy from fans for a strike. Awesome!!
Here we go for today...

Those our boys for the previous night. We hope to have the scores from tonight up shortly. I am really excited about the way Carter has finished up his his season. And I think that Coleman really deserves some consideration for fan attention come 2009. That is just me--I'm not sure how James feels about that.
Seeing the A's in Person at Camden yards was awesome. It looked like Sweeney has an approach when he is up there that rises above the other hitters we have. Barton the other night had an awesome game--even though he didn't register an at bat. All in all great game from out boys--with awesome help from the Orioles, and their ability to hand us walks with the bases loaded. Ohh and Blevins and Devine looked really good as well.

I'm excited to see Bailey.
I think Denorfia deserves a shot in the bigs, too. Sweeney, CarGon, Cunningham, with Denorfia to help CarGon against the lefties maybe?

Perhaps this should have been titled "Minor Athletics Playoff Subtraction"
since Kane County was “subtracted” from the postseason the other night.
On the other hand, Stockton moved on to the CAL league semis. So it’s not all bad.

I just hope that next season, the A's can make a free agent edition to the offense

I really doubt that Beane will go for a high priced FA until 2010.
Of course I also believe that he will try to trade for a young batting stud either this offseason or next that he can keep for a few years once the rest of the team catches up.

2009 Midland closer is likely to be Demel
Demel struck out 5 in 2 innings tonight against SJ, including the $6MM draft bonus catcher, Posey. I think both Carignan and Henry Rodriguez will be in the bullpen for Sacramento next year.

I'm still kind of unclear on why they haven't bumped him up yet
His numbers this season are sick. 90 of the 201 outs he recorded this season were strikeouts (12K/9IP), most of the rest of his batted balls were grounders, and it’s not like he’s some kind of soft-tosser. IMO he’s the best relief prospect in the system, and that includes Rodriguez.
Maybe they just don’t want to push him to Sacto and then have him stall there because there’s no room in the big-league pen.

Whoa, whoa, whoa.
When did Henry Rodriguez get promoted to Sacramento? Was he really doing all that great in Midland?
by danmerqury on Sep 6, 2008 9:40 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
A lot of guys get bump-ups for the playoffs
and since he’s on the 40-man, it’s conceivable that he could actually get called up to the bigs this year.

H-Rod in the bigs might be a bad idea
No need to give guys who are apparently not ready “tastes” of the bigs.

Even I'm not in favor of a Henry callup

Wow, how's this for weird
The Giants just called up Connor Gillaspie, their supplemental first-round pick, out of SHORT SEASON A BALL to the majors.
Talk about desperation.

That's just insane
It wasn’t like he had 10 home runs or anything. What the hell is wrong with that organization?

It's so insane, people are suggesting it must have been a secret codicil in his contract

Secret Codicil sounds like a pretty good monicker

Ryan Wing
I’m not sure the A’s will find a 40-man spot for Wing, but if they can figure out a way to get him a callup for a few weeks, I’d like to see it. The deep is so, so deep with left-handed pitching so there might not really be a spot for him, but he’s earned a look I think. I’m not saying he’s great; he’s a 26-year-old with an injury history who is on a minor league contract, but he’s a guy who might be worth keeping around in 2009.
by thejd44 on Sep 6, 2008 10:45 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I agree
I watched him closely all season, and I thought he would’ve already gotten a shot. It wouldnt hurt to try him. Yeah, he’s a little old to be in AAA, 26, but Ziggy is 28 and he just came up.
Never, Never, NEVER give up

I just think the LHP crunch in the bullpen is going to squeeze him out.
And I’m pretty sure he’ll be a minor league FA next year, so I doubt he’ll be in the organization next year unless they give him a call-up before the end of the season.

leftside of the BP is full it seems
and yeah wing will be a minor league FA, but he was a nice pickup
blevins plus whoever loses out on a rotation spot next season outman/meyer/eveland/braden etc i guess will be sentto the BP. they’ll likely decline embree’s option
plus sac also has kilby/marshall who will still be around
by Asfan4ever723 on Sep 6, 2008 11:42 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Meyer's good as gone.
It will probably be Duke-Gallagher-Braden-two of Outman/Eveland/Smith for rotation IMHO.
I think Gio should start the season off at AAA; he doesn’t look ready in what I’ve seen in the majors so far.
Pitching has to be traded for offense.
I see the future. I see cake.

Pitching doesn't have to be traded for offense
Because you’re probably not going to get enough offense to win next year anyway. If, at the deadline the the A’s a game out or something, then maybe giving up an arm or two would be alright.
It’s not like the A’s have too many pitchers who are out of options. May as well hang onto the guys and see what some of the young guys can do.
by thejd44 on Sep 7, 2008 9:29 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
The primary arm I would seek to move is Street.
Veteran but still young, bringing his value back up with good outings, has closer experience, affordable, etc.
I see the future. I see cake.

I wouldn't be upset with trading him necessarily
But I don’t think it needs to be done. If it is, I’d like to see Devine as closer. I still think Ziegler is more valuable coming in tough situations with guys on base.
by thejd44 on Sep 8, 2008 10:04 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
maybe for future offense, though
i don’t see a point in trading any of our pitching talent in the minors for a MLB hitter for next year, but something involving a top hitter in the minors makes plenty of sense, particularly one that would be MLB-ready in 2 years.

Sac will be a pitching water balloon in 2009
The Rivercat rotation and BP is about to reach critical mass next Spring. Loaded with AAAA talent and with youth floating up quickly, something has to give. BB absolutely has to trade some pitching for bats this winter. That will be fun to watch. A’s have several starting and relief pitchers in the minors right now that several teams would call up if they could. I think BB’s phone will be ringing in December.
by movetotexas on Sep 7, 2008 7:38 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Sac's rotation could be awesome next year, and entirely of prospects.
And likewise, they all could be called up midseason to the A’s to replace the A’s current rotation, theoretically.
Anderson, Cahill, Simmons, Outman, Mazzaro.

He absolutely doesn't have to trade anybody
Especially with how injury prone some of the players are, it would be in his best interest to keep everybody he can (I’m not including Foulke, Embree, or other guys. I’m talking about the prospects). Too much pitching is a great thing, and to get rid of it for a deal that isn’t extraordinary in a year when the team probably won’t win anyway is pretty silly.

I have literally no idea
what this
Sac will be a pitching water balloon in 2009
means. Sacramento’s rotation will explode if you throw it at someone? It will be wet, squishy and rubbery? It will be annoying and probably not worth it unless you’re a douchebag who enjoys that kind of thing?
Your 2008 Athletics: It's Nothing Personal.

So much talent that
it looks like it will explode. I just can’t see how there are enough innings to go around. A good problem to have, I suppose.
by movetotexas on Sep 7, 2008 12:12 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
A rotation has 5 players in it
The A’s don’t have 11 high-minors/majors pitching prospects. Even this system isn’t THAT deep.

I too didn't get the metaphor
But I agree that only douchebags enjoy water balloons.
