Raining in Baltimore: Game 1 of today's doubleheader postponed
Oakland Athletics at Baltimore Orioles, Sep 6, 2008 10:05 AM PDT
No word yet on whether there will be any baseball in Balmer today. The first game has already been postponed, and the forecast for this afternoon/evening doesn't look propitious:
Mostly cloudy and windy with rain showers early. Low near 70F. Winds NW at 20 to 30 mph. Chance of rain 80%.

A two game non-losing streak!
By the end of the day, it could be three!!!!

i just realized....
that the 11 runs scored last night might have been the total runs scored for us this series. And seeing as we most likely won’t play two today, we had to score them all last night.

The best part about the game(s) being rained out is that there's no reason to make them up
Which means less awful baseball to watch.

But they could be critical

these makeup games
may be important eventually, just for draft purposes, an extra win in 07 little did we know was the difference between smoak or weeks

All this trouble because of concerns
over parking/traffic overflow with two Sunday games (baseball/football) going at once? Pretty lame if you ask me. I understand a lot of the vendors, ticket takers, etc. also work for both, but the stadium operations folks had weeks or months to plan around that problem. So no baseball on a “partly cloudy” day tomorrow? Psssh.

especially with 2 bad teams. They would probably have a Marlins game type of attendance
which wouldn’t impact the parking much at all.

Exactly - you're pretty much planning for 15,000 fans.

The parking/traffic concern is legit
The Ravens suck, but they are huge here and their game will be a sell-out. Even if the games started/ended within an hour of each other (and even with the O’s low attendance), I could see there being a traffic nightmare with the shared parking facilities.
But none of that excuses the way this was handled. When the MLB schedule was released, the time for the Sunday O’s game was listed as TBD, so whoever is responsible for making these decisions has known for at least six freaking months that the Ravens game could be an issue.

I guess I just don't see a "traffic nightmare"
superceding “avoiding a double-header” or “canceling a game entirely” – how about running shuttles, offering reduced parking fees for carpoolers, etc.? We’re planning double-headers and bizarre Sunday off-days around cars?

Considering
how far in advance they knew about this, it’s goofy that they didn’t do any of those things. I wasn’t trying to say doubleheaders/postponements were good solutions, but it just seemed like people were saying a problem didn’t exist. That’s all.
I planned one of my rare weekends off around this series, so believe me when I say I’m really, really frustrated with all of the switching of days and the postponed (likely canceled) game.
Anyway, I’m off to the game! Hopefully the rain has stopped for good.

This is probably for the best ...
since they probably won’t bother to make up the games, lopping two highly winnable games off the schedule could be very helpful in the draft …

Local weather update
It’s 1:50 in the Philly area, and the storm just hit — after some rain showers off and on for a couple of hours, the wind suddenly picked up and the rain is harder and blowing sideways. Local reports said that we’d get 2 months worth of rain in 24 hours.

On the brighter side
I just turned on KYOU to see if there was some A’s themed filler, maybe a little Marty Lurie, and while there wasn’t, I was treated to a gay cover version of the old 867-5309 song. “Jimmie, Jimmie, who can I turn to….”, etc.
Somehow, the “found your number on the bathroom wall” part isn’t quite as aw-shucks sweet in the original.

Geren remained optimistic, though, despite the forecast: “I’ve seen people say it’s going to rain, and then it not.”

A game would be great but I can't believe it if
they’re not starting Outman. Smith could use a little rest, Outman has been anticipating his first major league start and is all geared up, and the A’s need to see what Outman can do whereas Smith is totally a known quantity. Outman should get the start if there’s one game.

WTF (D'backs/Dodgers)
With runners on 2nd & 3rd and 1 out, why intentionally walk Angel Berroa and his 631 OPS ? Sure, its sets up the DP with Billingsley, but failing that you’ve now got the bases loaded for the top of the order.
by green star oakland on Sep 6, 2008 3:05 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
They pitched to Berroa, first pitch strike, second pitch ball -
then pitched out a couple times, and then walked him intentionally when the count got to 3-1.

Pitched out ? Against a steal of home ?
And even at 3-1 why not go after him … its Angel Berroa were talking about here, he could play for the A’s.
by green star oakland on Sep 6, 2008 3:12 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
They were anticipating a squeeze bunt
Berroa swings at a lot of bad balls, so I don’t know why they didn’t bury a slider 3-1 – but they didn’t.
