49ers (and Raiders) season a day away
Alright, folks...I realize this post is coming right into the belly of the beast, but this is Fooch from Niners Nation. I'd imagine plenty of you are Raiders fans, but I do know that some 49ers fans sneak through the door (yours truly being one of them).
Now that baseball season is winding down, and the NFL season is officially underway, I thought it was a perfect time to remind everybody of the Bay Area football sites here at SB Nation.
Niners Nation is our 49ers site and Silver and Black Pride is our Raiders site (equal coverage for all). Most of you probably know of or remember Saint from here at AN and know the passion he brings to the table as a Raiders fan. Meanwhile, over at Niners Nation we're developing a nice little community of 49ers fans. Everybody brings quality insight, which makes for great conversation all season long. I know some of them post over here so you may be familiar with some of their work.
For the here and now, for those who haven't been over to Niners Nation, we have a year long prediction contest that starts Sunday. It's cumulative, so the more predictions you get in the better your chances. The prize is still to be determined, but I'm hoping it will involve some sort of 49ers merchandise. More on that to come.
So, if you get a chance now or anytime this season, swing by Niners Nation. The 49ers are not getting a lot of love from the national media, but I think they have some sleeper potential. If you ever have any questions, comments or concerns about Niners Nation, I'm all ears.

Totally disagree
The Raiders were not around when I was growing up. The only football team in the Bay Area were the 9ers, and they were AWESOME. How could I not be a 9’ers fan?
Then The Raiders decided that they wanted to move back to the town they had previously abandoned, and in doing so they ruined a perfectly good A’s baseball stadium. I hate the Raiders and have every right to do so.

Awesome?
The 49ers started play in 1946 and didn’t win their first playoff game until 1970. Just how awesome were they in those days?
The Coliseum was never a perfectly good baseball stadium. It was a perfectly good football stadium that also served as a passable baseball stadium.
You can disagree all you like but it’s a fact that the Coliseum was built for the Raiders and without them, there was no stadium in place to draw the A’s away from Kansas City.

That's fine
I’m not disagreeing that the A’s wouldn’t be here without the Raiders. I’m disagreeing that if you’re an A’s fan, you should be a Raiders fan simply because they inadvertently made it more convenient for the A’s to move here.
I was born in 1979. Between then and 1995 ,when the Raiders moved back , yes the 9’ers were AWESOME and there’s really no arguing otherwise. They were the team I grew up with and I’m sure as hell not going to switch my allegiance to a team that can’t decide whether the Bay Area is a good enough place to let their franchise take root.

If you were from Oakland, I doubt you'd feel that way
You guys can’t quit all the bitching about Mt. Davis ruining the Coliseum for baseball. It didn’t ruin baseball for the A’s any more than the A’s arrival ruined football for the Raiders. It resulted in some changes, some for the better, many for the worse. I didn’t much like having to watch football on a skint infield with the field rotated to accomdate the A’s. I didn’t like having to sit in different seats until baseball season was over (the third deck at the 20 yard line instead of the bleachers at the 43 yard line). But having a baseball team was worth the inconvenience of sitting in bad seats for a few games at the beginning of the season. (For you youngsters, under the old stadium configuration, the football field ran from home plate to centerfield until baseball season ended.) Without the Raiders, we wouldn’t have been able to enjoy the A’s and American League baseball all these years. I’m so sorry you lost your view of the hills.

I am from Oakland ...
I happen to live in Sacramento now, but I was born in and lived in Oakland for 21 out of my 27 years on this planet. (4 years in Claremont for college, the last two in Sac)
And I resent Al Davis a lot more for the financial aspect of it than the stadium aspect of it. (Not that I don’t resent the idiotic politicians as well) I resent him for leaving, even if I was a mere babe at the time and I resent him for demanding that the city bribe him to come back.
Now those things are not the be all and end all of it. I’m not a Niners fan because I resent Al Davis. I’m a Niners fan because I’m a Niners fan, I’ve always been a Niners fan and I will always be a Niners fan. When Al Davis is dead and buried, I may have a more neutral view of the Raiders — but that won’t stop me from being a Niners fan.

Yeah, I know.
I’m willing to concede that.
I’m even old enough to remember them in Oakland, but just barely (call me 76BARTEL), but my allegiance was still to the Niners. I mean I can’t deny the Super Bowls helped. When you’re that age and have a great team so close (Stockton), you can’t help but be aware of it. I guess I was 5 when they won the first one, but I don’t really remember it. I really remember the next one against the Dolphins.
It seems my football allegiance was really a result of family. It bugged the crap out of me how much my parents loved the Raiders, so I just couldn’t bring myself to root for them. Not that we didn’t get along, I just sometimes have to be contrary. And then the Raiders cut out of Dodge, my parents really didn’t follow football after that, so it was just me rooting for the Niners.
For what it’s worth, although my parents were also A’s fans, that was ok because we went to alot of games live. Dad goy season tix in ’87. Sat in left, saw Rickey play, and Eck warm up. The shared experience of those late ’80s playoff and Series wins is something that I still cherish.
Thus my allegiance to the A’s-Niners.
How, by the way, did you react when the Raiders left town? And when they returned?
It's Rhodes Scholar Night at the Coliseum tonight.
by Scottbass on Sep 7, 2008 12:14 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Mine was because of my family, too.
But I sided “with” them, not “against” them. (And to agree with Poppy’s bandwagon retort; the fact that the Raiders were dominant in the 70’s made it even easier to follow them, I am certain). Still the same memories apply; Dad and my older brothers taking me to games when I was younger. I stayed loyal even when they moved, and was ecstatic when they moved back, except not so much when all the renovations at the Coli were made for them. But I am a season ticket holder; been for ten years or so now. It’s just nice having football in Oakland, although the times have surely changed. The younger fans think there is a reputation to uphold and a beer quota to reach. It wasn’t like that. Oakland was a tough place to play because of the players not because the fans threw shit at the opposition. They are trying to put a family feel to it this year; a few policy changes have been made, which is great. The product has been awful: 19 wins in five seasons, but I guess I’m a glutton. Or maybe it’s great to be able to still go to games with Dad.
And yet, despite all that, the A’s still hold the rights to my heart more than the Raiders ever will.
I'm here to talk about the past.

The times have changed
Forty years ago it was the 40-Winos who had the drunken, out-of-control fans. It wasn’t a huge problem because there were usually more seagulls than people at Kezar stadium. The Raiders fans of that time were much better behaved than the so-called Faithful. When the Raiders returned from Los Angeles, a lot of the gangland and poseur b.s. followed them home. The morons in halloween attire sicken me almost as much as the wine-drinking phonies at Candlestink.

Mt. Davis is reason enough...
to despise the faiders forever. I was never more disappointed than when they moved back to Oakland. I used to live in El Segundo when they trained there and even got to know some of their families quite well. Even so, I never wished the team well and was quite happy about the tuck rule.

I lived in El Segundo for about two years. My sister still lives there. Such a chill area. I rented a two bed, 1.5 bath townhome for like a grand on Holly and Concord. A phenomenal deal that I just totally fell into. Until the owners sold it and rent went up almost $600 in a month. With rent so high, I moved back to the valley.

This was long before your time I am quite sure but...
the first time we lived there we rented a nice little 3 bedroom home on West Pine . That was from 1985-1987. We moved back to the bay area for a year and then returned the following year…We lived ‘88-89 in a large rented home on Sheldon Street. My husband was a project accountant with Chevron and they were building the Hyperion plant there. We LOVED El Segundo. We have great memories of our time there. I became friends with Kathy Christensen, her husband, Todd played for the Raiders and I was also friends with Sarah Junkin. Her husband is Trey Junkin. I also met other players and their wives but didn’t know any of them well. The reason I met Kathy and Sarah is because we worked together on the same day at a co-op preschool for our little ones.
My oldest daughter took Piano lessons from a lady who lived on Concord. Small world isn’t it?
Oh and I sympathize about the rent…we wanted to stay there but we couldn’t afford the price of the homes. We had rented our home here in Norcal but the price differential was Gi-normous.

I couldn't disagree more with this comment
Even if O’Sullivan miraculously proves… well, pretty much everyone who’s ever employed him wrong by being semi-decent, he’s not under contract for next season and is liable to sign elsewhere. He doesn’t have anything close to Smith’s upside. The only reason he’s getting time is that Nolan thinks that squeezing out an extra meaningless win might save his job.
I hate it when coaches (and GMs) are under “win or else” clouds, because they invariably do stupid, short-sighted shit like this.
Your 2008 Athletics: It's Nothing Personal.
by PaulThomas on Sep 6, 2008 1:40 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah ... Smith has been really poorly handled ...
The book on him was that he had all the ability in the world — but it would take him time to get going because he’s not the improvising type — he needs to know the offense really well to succeed. So what do they do? Implement a new offense every year he’s been on the team. Really stupid.
Because of that, I agree with Christine that the team will probably be better with O’Sullivan. He has some good targets and he knows the system. If the line can pull it together and open some holes for Gore, the offense could be decent and the defense could just make them a playoff team …
If the team believes in O’Sullivan long term, they shouldn’t have trouble keeping him. Unless he goes MVP on the league, he’ll just be looked at as a system guy. He won’t get a lot of interest.

O'Sullivan reminds me of another Rattay.
If Smith had been 100 percent I would have rather that they worked on him as the starter. But, even though he worked hard to compete for the starting job during the summer his shoulder doesn’t seem 100 percent. So, he needs to sit out and get healthy IMO.

I agree with you...
the whole smith situation has been poorly handled. with the imminent firing/departure of nolan, martz is just waiting in the wings to get his shot at resuscitating the franchise (without smith apparently). if nolan doesn’t go, i’m sure martz will be gone (he and nolan just don’t jive together) and hence ANOTHER offensive coordinator again for 9ers. in either case, most of if not all the blame should rest on the shoulders of the Dorks….oh how i miss Eddie D…

In my mind the author really glosses over the great probablility of the Raiders returning to Los Angeles (I think it’s gonna happen, unfortunately), but it’s chock full of information.
