Open Thread: Game 139 - A's at Kansas City

Oakland Athletics @ Kansas City Royals

LET'S PLAY TWO!

Hi, I'm baseballgirl, and I will be co-hosting this event, as we prepare to settle down for a long day of A's baseball. Hopefully this will be more fun than the long month of August, where even an hour of A's baseball was quite the commitment.

For convenience sake, there will be two separate game threads, back-to-back, but only one wrap-up after both games. Let's hope there is a lot to talk about; after all, six hours of A's baseball should be a dream for us, right?

I do love double-headers. And it's like Christmas; after not seeing one in years, we have the possibility of two in three days. It would be more exciting (aside from being completely unfair, scheduling-wise) if the A's were playing for more than just respect this season, but we will take what we can get.

First up this afternoon is Dana Eveland--fresh off his second excellent start since his brief stint in the minors--taking on Brian Bannister and the KC Royals.

And look who's back in the lineup!

Let's Go A's!

Remember the days of Good Sweeney / Bad Sweeney? Wow.

by schmifty on Sep 4, 2008 1:54 PM PDT   0 recs

Who knew, right?

They’re like Better, Best on this team!

So, bring on Bonds! Or, not... then, bring back Langerhans!! -One won lost one

by baseballgirl on Sep 4, 2008 1:58 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Why is Crosby hitting 2nd?

Why is Hannahan playing over Pennington?

I’m pretty sure both of those guys have really naughty pictures of Geren.

by thejd44 on Sep 4, 2008 2:01 PM PDT   0 recs

Croz really likes hitting 2nd

Maybe he whined his way into it

go to jobfinder

and say that you wont swing at meaty first pitch fast balls and the job is yours

Center Field

The fact that they put Sweeney there and Cunningham is in right…

Would you say that signals that the team views Sweeney as a better CFer than Cunningham? Does the “centerfield defense” depth chart look like this: Rajai-CarGon-Sweeney-Cunningham?

I’m just curious. I think it’s interesting to see how the team views Cunningham’s D.

Maybe I’m reading too much into one day’s lineup.

by notsellingjeans on Sep 4, 2008 2:02 PM PDT   0 recs

I'm reading ESPN's Insider Game Guide and I thought it might be interesting to answer this in light of the info they have in the Depth Chart

But seeing as they’ve got Carlos Gonzalez listed as a starting pitcher… nevermind, this thing is crap.

by schmifty on Sep 4, 2008 2:11 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I think cunningham ultimately could win a starting job

because Sweeney and Cargon both seem especially suited for right field, especially with cargon’s hose

but he’s only been in the bigs for a couple of days. i’d give it some time

by NateHST on Sep 4, 2008 2:21 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Yeah, I think CarGon will be in center...

but in the interim, I also think it’s interesting that they apparently view Sweeney as being more of a CFer than Cunningham.

bbg calls on Mr. Cub

Love it.

Let’s play two, indeed. Double-headers were the best; day ones, night ones, didn’t matter.

I'm here to talk about the past.

by 67MARQUEZ on Sep 4, 2008 2:03 PM PDT   0 recs

Yay for double headers!!!!!!!

There's no crying in baseball!

by gigglingone on Sep 4, 2008 2:04 PM PDT   0 recs

Meh, I have to watch the first part from work

And I’ll get fired if I use mlb.tv. I usually use MLB’s Gameday, but did try ESPN’s Gamecast recently. Anyone have input as to which they consider better? My only beef so far with Gamecast is that I can’t figure out where the pitch mph info is.

by schmifty on Sep 4, 2008 2:07 PM PDT   0 recs

Woohoo! Double the Sweeney, double the fun.

I hope Big Sweeney plays game 2 as well—I’d like to actually see him.

by whiteshoes40 on Sep 4, 2008 2:11 PM PDT   0 recs

That's a great line...I have MISSED the Sweeneys

So, bring on Bonds! Or, not... then, bring back Langerhans!! -One won lost one

by baseballgirl on Sep 4, 2008 2:13 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Good to see Senior Sweeney back

Crosby on the other hand is a worthless as tits on a bull

I hate unproductive outs and the A's are producing them at record production

by Trainman on Sep 4, 2008 2:13 PM PDT   0 recs

I'm at work, but....

…is game one on local tv? The A’s website said so, but no other sources did, so I am only TIVOing game 2.

by Dr Pez on Sep 4, 2008 2:13 PM PDT   0 recs

Cunningham

Looks kinda shady in the outfield. And hopefully Ellis doesnt play again in a A’s uniform, time to move on.

by pbra17 on Sep 4, 2008 2:21 PM PDT   0 recs

Is Eveland sticking with his new windup

where he doesn’t take his hands behind his head?

by NateHST on Sep 4, 2008 2:23 PM PDT   0 recs

Thanks...

…I didn’t think that game one would be on TV, it’s too bad that the A’s website indicated that it was.

by Dr Pez on Sep 4, 2008 2:23 PM PDT   0 recs

offseason idea

how about getting mark teahen back, i think he’s been mishandled in KC…move him back to 3b

he’s a possible non tender candidate or it probably would take much to get him

by Asfan4ever723 on Sep 4, 2008 2:27 PM PDT   0 recs

Baisley last night:

4-4 with two bombs in a losing effort.

by notsellingjeans on Sep 4, 2008 2:42 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Teahen can't actually hit though

I can’t believe his major offensive regression over the past 3 years is because of moving positions. He’s just dropped off the map completely.

by thejd44 on Sep 4, 2008 2:31 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Not sure if anyone noted this here on AN yet...

but Bret Anderson is listed on the Sacramento Roster, I would imagine it’s just that Midlands season is over and he’s only pitched a little over 100 innings this year (not counting Beijing). But, does anyone think he begins next year at AAA? He did dominate in his brief AA innings.

Gonzalez, De Los Santos, Anderson, Cahill, Simmons...the best rotation in baseball....in, uh 2010.

by J Mack on Sep 4, 2008 2:30 PM PDT   0 recs

I bet he and Cahill and Simmons all get long looks in Spring Training

If they do well but not dominate, i’d say they go to triple A to start.
if they do okay, start at double A

by NateHST on Sep 4, 2008 2:32 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Gamecast said all those looking strikes on Barton were well out of the strike zone

But I guess none of us are able to see this on TV so… who knows.

by schmifty on Sep 4, 2008 2:31 PM PDT   0 recs

I'm watching on mlb.tv

I’m just tired of complaining about how often Barton is called out on bad pitches.

by thejd44 on Sep 4, 2008 2:32 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

The third strike on Barton

Was called ball four for suzuki that at bat right before, bad call but still gotta try and foul it off, too close to take.

by pbra17 on Sep 4, 2008 2:33 PM PDT   0 recs

This has been debated before

But swinging at obvious balls = not a good idea. You can’t swing because you assume the umpire will screw up.

by thejd44 on Sep 4, 2008 2:40 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

It was obviously too close to take

And Barton almost as much as Cust, takes strike three looking so youd think he would try and foul the pitch off instead of just standing there.

by pbra17 on Sep 4, 2008 2:45 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

According to Gamecast, that pitch was in Barton’s cooooold zone, so I guess I don’t mind him not swinging that time

by schmifty on Sep 4, 2008 3:37 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Every time Ken starts saying Ryan Shealy

I think he’s going to say Ryan Sweeney. Wishful thinking, I suppose.

by whiteshoes40 on Sep 4, 2008 2:35 PM PDT   0 recs

Another terrible throw by Miley that was saved by Barton

I’m sorry, but this guy is simply not a good defensive 3B.

by thejd44 on Sep 4, 2008 2:40 PM PDT   0 recs

Mr. HannahMontanaHan.....

is simply not a good BASEBALL player.

I see his name in the lineup.

by J Mack on Sep 4, 2008 2:43 PM PDT   0 recs

giving hannahan 400+ ab's is major fail

theyve had since late 07 to find a 3b and thats the best they could do

jack is a serious 40 man roster goner this offseason

by Asfan4ever723 on Sep 4, 2008 2:44 PM PDT   0 recs

The fail about it is that there are other guys who deserve a chance to prove themselves

I’m not saying Pennington is good, or even an upgrade over Hannahan, but he certainly deserves the opportunity at this point. And, of course, Baisley deserves a shot, too. I think he’ll get it once the AAA playoffs are done.

by thejd44 on Sep 4, 2008 2:45 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Hannahan definately

Has to be gone this offseason, he was given a chance this year and he proved hes not a solid contributor, time to look elsewhere

by pbra17 on Sep 4, 2008 2:47 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

It is hard to believe

that a guy who has struck out 115 times so far is still playing regularly. I can understand Cust, at least he walks a lot and hits 25 HR’s or so, but Hannahan?

by Laoren on Sep 4, 2008 3:55 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

geren likes platooning money penny

pennington should be getting some ab’s at 2b just to see what he can do

by Asfan4ever723 on Sep 4, 2008 2:47 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I'm thinking they think they know Pennington is utility at best

While they’re still holding out hope that Patterson can play everyday in the majors. And I guess that’s good even though I have no faith in Patterson being in the majors long enough to accumulate 1000 at bats.

Local TV showing infomercials instead of the game.

Do they really get more money out of that than selling ads for a baseball game during that time?

And then Beane can use some of them as soccer players next year.
