RULE 5
So with all the additions to our farm system, I've been wondering who we need to protect this fall and next. I wish I could be more helpful here, but the rules are so confusing that I'd just mess it up. If anyone would be willing to post (here or in a seperate post) -- I'd love to know who's gonna be 'at risk' when the rule 5 draft comes around.
I think we can expect about 7 open slots this off-season on the 40 man roster, but I fear we have more top tier prospects than can fit on our 40 man.
coming off from this season:
Emil Brown, Mike Sweeney, Jack Hannahan, Donnie Murphy, Keith Foulke, Frank Thomas, Javier Herrera(probably) and probably a few pitchers (Meyer, Saarloos, Gray). Who knows about Ellis & Embree... we shall see)
Luckily -- Cardenas, Cahill & Anderson are young and won't be on the 40 man till after rule 5 at the earliest.
But where does that leave these guys (among others):
Hitters: Murton, Patterson, Petit, CarGon, DiNorfia, Baisley, Pennington, Powell, Cunningham, Robnett, Putnam, (this assumes an outfield combo of Buck, Sweeney, Davis & Cust -- though you can interchange others with any of them and have the same numbers problem)
Pitchers: Gio, Outman, Braden, Blevins, Brown, HRod, Meyer, Carignan, Gray, Saarloos, Knox, Marshall, Komine, Webb, Windsor

eligible
players not on 40 man..
any college picks from 05 and earlier
HS picks from 04 or 05 HS picks that were 19 when drafted
ryan webb
justin sellers
tom everidge
recker
kilby
madsen
putnam
windsor
most of the guys that have been called up during the season, who were eligible are already on the 40 man
out of that above group i’d say recker/webb/kilby/sellers might have the best shots for a spot
players on 40 man who’s roster spot is shaky probably hannahan/gray/robnett/meyer/saarloos + of course the impending FA’s
mazzaro/lansford/italiano decisions come up after 09

Guzman has to be added if the A's want to keep him
I did a fanpost on this topic about a month ago; the OP might want to check it out.

Mike Sweeney is a non-issue at this point
He’s not on any A’s roster.

Putnam MIGHT get back on the roster, but Robnett is not.

I should have probably made myself clearer.
Robnett will not be on the 40 man roster come next season. He’ll be one of the first to be bumped. If a spot is needed after the FA’s have left, you can bet he is on the short list to be taken off in favor of protecting someone else from the Rule 5 Draft.

i wonder what happens with everidge
local guy from sonoma st.
he does turn 26 so maybe a bit old to be considered a legit prospect
but A’s kept him in high A stockton for 2 season for whatever reason
one of the few righty power bats in the upper levels of the farm system
if barton continues to struggle, he might be the closest to ready option as a 1b/DH type, did play some 3b at times

Everidge
I’m rooting for him for the simple fact that I, too, am a Seawolf.

Is it Seawolfs or Seawolves?
I haven’t been able to come to a decision.

There are currently 44 players on the 40 man roster.
http://oakland.athletics.mlb.com/team/roster_40man.jsp?c_id=oak
Of those, Thomas, Ellis, Chavez and Andrew Brown are all on the 60 day disabled list and will have to come off. So from that list we need to lose at least 4 and another 4 for players to be added.
Thomas, Meyer, Foulke, Emil Brown, Saarloos, Embree, Gray, Robnett, Herrera and either Murphy or Hannahan could come off. This would open up enough spots with a couple to spare in case we signed one or more free or secret agents.

Also it looks like BB may sign Ellis so that is why I kept him on the list.

I'm wondering whether they can sign him after the Rule 5 draft to give them more time
to protect someone. Not that it’s likely to make a big difference.

Doesn't work that way
If you fill up your roster before the Rule 5 draft, then sign Ellis afterward, someone will have to be designated for assignment to create room for him. DFA is worse than Rule 5— a Rule 5 pick has to go on the claiming team’s 25-man roster, an outright waiver claim only has to go on their 40-man. You’re better off leaving Marginal Player X off the roster and hoping that he just doesn’t get picked up.

In the offseason, does a player immediately go on the 40 man when signed?
Or do teams have time to officially add the player?

Are you talking about big league players signed in FA?
If so, the answer is yes. Any player signed to a big league contract is automatically placed on the 40 man roster.

Right
Major League contract → 40-man
Minor League contract → not
So, eg, Emil Brown went on the A’s 40-man roster right away, but Mike Sweeney did not.

It would be cool if you could sign a secret agent
and not have to reveal who it is until you actually use him in a game.

It's "Cindi" - Gaaaaaaaaah!!!!!!!!!!!
I HATE it when people spell names wrong!!!!! Grrrrrr…. :-( Soker does it all the time, and basegirl too.
And for the record, the dot over the first “i” is a heart this week.

I like Cindi. A. She never pretends to know more than she does. B. She has unbridled enthusiasm for her "Hotties," and isn't afraid to show it. -IM4Oakgal

You're way too high-maintenance, Cindi.
Otherwise, I’d be tempted to ask you out. You seem to like baseball.
I'm here to talk about the past.

For how long can Chavez and Brown be kept on the 60-day DL?
I don’t think it’s possible to keep them on through the entire off-season. Is there a deadline for putting them back on the 40-man (or releasing, trading, or whatever other transaction)?
by thejd44 on Sep 30, 2008 8:18 PM PDT 0 recs
Yep
As soon as the World Series ends, 60-Day DLers have to re-join the 40-man. This isn’t a big issue, because there’s enough free agents that will be leaving the 40-man at the exact same time.
There is no 60-DL in the offseason.
