Open Thread: Game 161 - A's @ Mariners
This is it ladies and gentleman! It's been real, it's been fun, but I can't say it's been real fun. The A's 2008 season ends today and we are all wishing it ends on an upnote as the A's attempt to salvage one game of a series against one of the worst teams in major league baseball. Fireballing lefty Josh Outman takes the hill for the A's, opposed by Seattle's knuckle-ball extraordinaire R.A. Dickey. Hopefully, Dickey's control problems persist today and give the A's plenty of baserunners to work with both early and often in the ballgame.
With the .500 mark and 2nd place in the division both statistically out of reach on the final day of the season, Bob Geren and the A's will attempt to improve on or at least tie last season's total of 76 wins on the year today. Since the A's will only play 161 games this season (due to the cancelled game in Baltimore last month) they can actually tie last year's win and still incrementally improve their win percentage with a win today. Hip-hip hooray for baby steps with this young team!

One last time.....
I hate it when baseball season ends.

Here's hoping
that this game lasts until at least February.
A free society is one where it is safe to be unpopular.
I hope the Rangers beat the Angels. Then they won't win 100 games.
Brewers just tied the Cubs, 1-1 in the 7th. Kendall’s up with the bases loaded and 2 outs. Grand slam time!
:(
I don’t even get to watch it, because it’s only on CSN+. I hate the Giants.

Hopefully, we'll have our own Comcast channel next year
I hope that Comcast SportsNet West deal works out. Supposedly the A’s want CSNW added to the channel lineup in the Bay Area.

it's channel 410 on my tv
which i normally don’t get, except when the giants are on.
There's no crying in baseball!
I'm really kicking myself for not making it to any games this year.
The seats in Chicago I could have had for $50 suddenly seem cheap.
A free society is one where it is safe to be unpopular.
Ryan's dad is driving to the Bay Area today to be with him for his surgery tomorrow.
then they’re gonna have a roadtrip back to Iowa. Awwwww…
Aw.
You think RyDaddy would swing down to MO to pick me up? I can drive… kind of.
Was this on the pre-show or something?
But he came back. And there was much rejoicing.
He's having surgery tomorrow?! Yikes.
Okay, I’m going to head out and stake out a few spots along I-80. I’ve done the trip from here to Iowa many times, and it is very, very boring. Ryan will need some entertainment.

Nevada is a killer.
Then again, so are the salt flats at night, and Nebraska goes on forever. Basically: worst road trip ever.

He'll probably stow away in the backseat.
by whiteshoes40 on Sep 28, 2008 1:29 PM PDT up reply actions
He's got his daddy.
Lots of time for father and son bonding. Aww. Plus, Ryan is gonna need all that time to tell his dad about Dale.
So many good shows started this week
It may not be baseball, but The Office, Dexter, and Californication all premiering in the same week! I love it.
I've already watched the first episode of Dexter and Chuck.
Swoon.
But he came back. And there was much rejoicing.
I have the audio books,
but the guy reading it has a lisp and I couldn’t stand listening to him.
But he came back. And there was much rejoicing.
But they're not 3 hours a day, every day.
Baseball is a very time-consuming obsession. Which is why it is so amazing.

The A's should do with Crosby what the Giants did with Snow
Put him in the lineup, then replace him and after that we’ll never have to see him in uniform ever again. Ever.

Wow, Buck.
Methinks that boy has written himself into the 2009 lineup.
A free society is one where it is safe to be unpopular.
God damn, this AL Central stuff is a little reminder of why I love baseball.
But he came back. And there was much rejoicing.
Twinkie Town has a great breakdown of the possibilities....

There's no crying in baseball!
And we peacefully root for different teams.
I’d root for Mets over Phillies and/or Cubs, but not over Brewers. But that’s just me.
Now with 100% more Canuck.
Woohoo!
I love bad fielding when it goes our way.
If it goes the other teams way, I yell at the umpire.

I heard the dirt when Jack slide.
Sigh. I’ll miss you, dirt.
But he came back. And there was much rejoicing.
I'm so distracted.
Listening to the radio and flipping between the Brewers and Mets (and Giants, just to see if it’s over yet) games. Ahhh.

See, I didn't even know we had three runs.
And here I thought I was good at multitasking.

I was having even more trouble when the 49ers game was on
but thankfully they were less than exciting so I could focus on baseball.
yup, i stopped watching that game at halftime
i may end up turning off a lot of niners games early this season…
There's no crying in baseball!
pinch me...
I must be dreaming.
Someone has to wake up our pitcher, too.
We're in a team-wide funk. ~Mark Ellis
I shouted that once at a game.
Called him Dale. The fans sitting around me all just stopped shouting and stared at me. I had a lot of explaining to do.
just a random story that no one cares about.
We're in a team-wide funk. ~Mark Ellis
I care.
I’ve had to explain “Dale” more than once. I laugh… no one else does. :(
But he came back. And there was much rejoicing.
I laughed about it...
and they just continued to stare. They completely ignored me the rest of the game.
Obviously, they’ve never experienced AN.
We're in a team-wide funk. ~Mark Ellis
It seems like just yesterday...
AN was waking up at 3:00 AM to watch our boys in Japan. My heart is crying today.
I’ve also had to explain “Staplehead”.
…and then we learned that he jumped into the shallow end of the pool!
But he came back. And there was much rejoicing.
Gameday says that the game is supposed to be on TV on CSN-BA
but the Giants are on for some reason…

Have you seen the ads for "Flash of Genius"?
The guy has “grit, heart, and determination.” I LOL’d
But he came back. And there was much rejoicing.
NY will be a sad little town
this year. Mets fail.

Don't count out the Marlins bullpen just yet.
One more inning for them to fail.
Now with 100% more Canuck.
Brew Crew....
another broken heart for the Mets. Willie Randolph must be laughing his ass off.
"You may glory in a team triumphant, but you fall in love with a team in defeat."--The Boys of Summer
It's going to be hard to decide who my NL
team will be in the playoffs.

cubbies for me
Go Rich!
(btw, did you hear Gaudin was left off the postseason roster??)
There's no crying in baseball!
No....that's shocking.
"You may glory in a team triumphant, but you fall in love with a team in defeat."--The Boys of Summer
Oh, sad.
We’ll take you back, Chad! Of course, we’re not in the playoffs, but that’s not the point…

unrelated to the Brewers...
at least the A’s got out of the inning with the lead. lets see how long that lasts.

If so, what time to the WS and Tigers play tomorrow?

So much late season drama this year...
which I just don’t care about. I want my A’s back.

I tried that....
I always relapse in March.

I'm ODing on baseball at the moment
they’ll find me face down on the bathroom floor with the remote still clutched in my hands.
Very confused.
I’d say “screw you” if I was on the Tigers.
But he came back. And there was much rejoicing.
CWS and Twins and Tigers.
Thought the WS were out of it if the Twins won.
But he came back. And there was much rejoicing.
only way the WS are out is if Twins Win and WS lose
Otherwise, there will be more baseball
There's no crying in baseball!
Oh.
Yeah, not the best situation for the Tigers. At least they could get the joy of ruining another team’s chance at the playoffs.
by whiteshoes40 on Sep 28, 2008 1:43 PM PDT up reply actions
Nope.
Means baseball tomorrow!!!! And the chance to watch some guaranteed broken hearts. I love that stuff. I always like watching the loosing team in the little league playoffs too. I’m wrong…..but I just can’t help it.
"You may glory in a team triumphant, but you fall in love with a team in defeat."--The Boys of Summer
And even if the Sox win....
THEY STILL HAVE TO PLAY THE TWINS!! AHHHHHH!!!! BASEBALL… OVER…. LOAD….
But he came back. And there was much rejoicing.
Watching both Chicago and Minnesota fans suffer....
and the truly delightful part? IT"S GOING TO END BADLY FOR ONE OF THEM!!!!
"You may glory in a team triumphant, but you fall in love with a team in defeat."--The Boys of Summer
WhiteSox are in trouble though
If the Twins and Sox win, the Sox have to do a make up game with the Tigers. If they win that one, they have to do a playoff game against the Twins.
facepalm.jpg
Freddy Garcia pitches for the Tigers tomorrow
So hopefully that’s season over for the White Sox.
Now with 100% more Canuck.
Bahahaha. Guess who's pitching for the Marlins?
Our old friend, Arthur Rhodes. Facing Delgado, 2 on, 2 out in the 8th.
so the mets still have hope?

He's the official A's September stud.
Hope he keeps his cajones in April.

"You may glory in a team triumphant, but you fall in love with a team in defeat."--The Boys of Summer
he should hit for the cycle.
it would be a nice ending to a disappointing, depressing season.

wow , could not get to the mlbtv website
everybody must be wanting to watch the A’s and M’s.
alaska A (now in Colorado)
Yeah, that must be it.
<Swat!> Stupid flying pigs. <Swat!>
A free society is one where it is safe to be unpopular.
hey, the only way to guarantee a win
is to never let your fielders have a play on the ball.
There's no crying in baseball!
8 K's in 2.2
No other outs other than strikeouts still.. and they’re losing.. Is Lincecum on the field by himself?
The Giants can only wish....
he’d still need a catcher…

so he gets a highlight on gameday. Then I can see him.

It's Swooney. He should have a highlight every day just for being hot.

We would see lots of Ryan...
and that would be awesome. can we fire whoever’s running it now and hire you?
We're in a team-wide funk. ~Mark Ellis
They just show a replay of RyRy hitting a HR off Huddy...
then getting a hug from Mike Sweeney. It was adorable.
But he came back. And there was much rejoicing.

whoa, mets fans suck
dude, it’s the bottom of the ninth, your team is down by 2 runs, if they win they continue on, GET ON YOUR FEET! lazy frickin’ mets fans….
There's no crying in baseball!
Despondant, Demoralized, Depressed,
Disgusted, Disenfranchised, Doomed Mets fans! They know the drill all to well.
"You may glory in a team triumphant, but you fall in love with a team in defeat."--The Boys of Summer
Haha, I remember Ryan's first HR.
A date and I were driving home from dinner, and the game was on the radio. I aww’ed when Ryan hit the HR. The guy was jealous that I showed more interest in Ryan than him that night.
he apparently didn't know Rule #1 of dating an A's fan
Don’t go out during a game. Wait for an off day or go to the game.
There's no crying in baseball!
i always take the ladies
to an A’s game…

white esurance sign behind home plate..oh so that’s why durham is an absolutely terrible defensive second baseman.. - xbhaskarx
...
i’m from fremont hahaha
in fact, an alum of SJSU. I almost turned my entire nursing class into A’s fans because of the ALDS vs the Twins
white esurance sign behind home plate..oh so that’s why durham is an absolutely terrible defensive second baseman.. - xbhaskarx
according to Giants fans though
Being an A’s fan wasn’t very “bay area” of me haha
white esurance sign behind home plate..oh so that’s why durham is an absolutely terrible defensive second baseman.. - xbhaskarx
That's a bit of a stretch:
The TBS announcer is trying to make a connection between it being Sunday and a man named Church coming up as the tying run. Nice try.
i feel bad for the people who emptied their wallets to go to this game
earlier today i was so jealous but… not anymore
Outman just barely got out of the inning.
He’s lucky. I was considering hunting him down for making us lose the last game of the season. He wouldn’t be very happy.
