Open Thread: Game 161 - A's @ Mariners

This is it ladies and gentleman! It's been real, it's been fun, but I can't say it's been real fun. The A's 2008 season ends today and we are all wishing it ends on an upnote as the A's attempt to salvage one game of a series against one of the worst teams in major league baseball. Fireballing lefty Josh Outman takes the hill for the A's, opposed by Seattle's knuckle-ball extraordinaire R.A. Dickey. Hopefully, Dickey's control problems persist today and give the A's plenty of baserunners to work with both early and often in the ballgame.

With the .500 mark and 2nd place in the division both statistically out of reach on the final day of the season, Bob Geren and the A's will attempt to improve on or at least tie last season's total of 76 wins on the year today. Since the A's will only play 161 games this season (due to the cancelled game in Baltimore last month) they can actually tie last year's win and still incrementally improve their win percentage with a win today. Hip-hip hooray for baby steps with this young team!

One last time.....

I hate it when baseball season ends.

Way to go Phillies!

Looks like I can root for the A’s without ambivalence this afternoon.

Here's hoping

that this game lasts until at least February.

I hope the Rangers beat the Angels. Then they won't win 100 games.

Brewers just tied the Cubs, 1-1 in the 7th. Kendall’s up with the bases loaded and 2 outs. Grand slam time!

groudns out

by oakinboston on Sep 28, 2008 1:09 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Let's go Mets!

and Brewers! I want to see a one-game play-off tomorrow. That’d be pretty sweet.

by thesteve9x on Sep 28, 2008 1:10 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I'd rather see the Mets win it

but I don’t want the season to end yet.

by thesteve9x on Sep 28, 2008 1:11 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I so sad.

But he came back. And there was much rejoicing.

by Jennifer on Sep 28, 2008 1:06 PM PDT   0 recs

:(

I don’t even get to watch it, because it’s only on CSN+. I hate the Giants.

by whiteshoes40 on Sep 28, 2008 1:09 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

:(

Even saddernessly.

But he came back. And there was much rejoicing.

Hopefully, we'll have our own Comcast channel next year

I hope that Comcast SportsNet West deal works out. Supposedly the A’s want CSNW added to the channel lineup in the Bay Area.

by uci anteater on Sep 28, 2008 1:13 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

it's channel 410 on my tv

which i normally don’t get, except when the giants are on.

I'm really kicking myself for not making it to any games this year.

The seats in Chicago I could have had for $50 suddenly seem cheap.

Dude. Prince Fielder is massive.

He could crush little Ray Durham with his pinkie finger.

Aw.

You think RyDaddy would swing down to MO to pick me up? I can drive… kind of.

Was this on the pre-show or something?

But he came back. And there was much rejoicing.

He's having surgery tomorrow?! Yikes.

Okay, I’m going to head out and stake out a few spots along I-80. I’ve done the trip from here to Iowa many times, and it is very, very boring. Ryan will need some entertainment.

by whiteshoes40 on Sep 28, 2008 1:24 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I cannot believe he's driving.

But he came back. And there was much rejoicing.

by Jennifer on Sep 28, 2008 1:25 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Nevada is a killer.

Then again, so are the salt flats at night, and Nebraska goes on forever. Basically: worst road trip ever.

by whiteshoes40 on Sep 28, 2008 1:26 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I wonder if Dale is coming home with him?

But he came back. And there was much rejoicing.

by Jennifer on Sep 28, 2008 1:27 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

He's got his daddy.

Lots of time for father and son bonding. Aww. Plus, Ryan is gonna need all that time to tell his dad about Dale.

So many good shows started this week

It may not be baseball, but The Office, Dexter, and Californication all premiering in the same week! I love it.

by thesteve9x on Sep 28, 2008 1:13 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I've already watched the first episode of Dexter and Chuck.

Swoon.

But he came back. And there was much rejoicing.

by Jennifer on Sep 28, 2008 1:14 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Don't tell me what happens in Dexter..

Even though I already read the books.

by thesteve9x on Sep 28, 2008 1:15 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

NOTHING like the book.

But he came back. And there was much rejoicing.

by Jennifer on Sep 28, 2008 1:15 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I read the episode description

It sounds like the start of the 3rd book.

by thesteve9x on Sep 28, 2008 1:16 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I have the audio books,

but the guy reading it has a lisp and I couldn’t stand listening to him.

But he came back. And there was much rejoicing.

by Jennifer on Sep 28, 2008 1:17 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Hahahaha

Why would they think that was a good idea?

by thesteve9x on Sep 28, 2008 1:18 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

But they're not 3 hours a day, every day.

Baseball is a very time-consuming obsession. Which is why it is so amazing.

by whiteshoes40 on Sep 28, 2008 1:15 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Playoffs.

RAYS!!!!!!

Now with 100% more Canuck.

by Blicks on Sep 28, 2008 1:16 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

The A's should do with Crosby what the Giants did with Snow

Put him in the lineup, then replace him and after that we’ll never have to see him in uniform ever again. Ever.

by thejd44 on Sep 28, 2008 1:12 PM PDT   0 recs

HR!!

But he came back. And there was much rejoicing.

Eff you Florida.

by thesteve9x on Sep 28, 2008 1:19 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

And we peacefully root for different teams.

I’d root for Mets over Phillies and/or Cubs, but not over Brewers. But that’s just me.

Now with 100% more Canuck.

by Blicks on Sep 28, 2008 1:20 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

You lose Mets

I’m glad I can freely root for whoever I feel like, GO MILWAUKEE!

I love bad fielding when it goes our way.

can’t follow this many games at once….

There's no crying in baseball!

by gigglingone on Sep 28, 2008 1:23 PM PDT   0 recs

I'm so distracted.

Listening to the radio and flipping between the Brewers and Mets (and Giants, just to see if it’s over yet) games. Ahhh.

by whiteshoes40 on Sep 28, 2008 1:24 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

See, I didn't even know we had three runs.

And here I thought I was good at multitasking.

by whiteshoes40 on Sep 28, 2008 1:25 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

3?

I thought we had 2.

But he came back. And there was much rejoicing.

I forgot Biscuit skord.

But he came back. And there was much rejoicing.

I was having even more trouble when the 49ers game was on

but thankfully they were less than exciting so I could focus on baseball.

by thesteve9x on Sep 28, 2008 1:26 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

yup, i stopped watching that game at halftime

i may end up turning off a lot of niners games early this season…
