Open Thread: Game 158 - A's at Texas
Oakland Athletics @ Texas Rangers
Well, the last Wednesday of the year comes to a close with the A's trying to win the series against the Rangers, and trying to move themselves into a very very distant second place in the AL West.
This morning, Dana Eveland will take on Matt Harrison (who shut out the A's earlier this month) in the finale of this series, as the A's try to get some momentum going into Seattle for the last series of the year.
Obviously this season has been a mixed bag; a little more disappointing than expected, mostly because it took the A's half of the season before they finally collapsed into 'rebuilding' mode. But there is a lot to look forward to in seasons to come, and I hope we will have missed baseball enough to welcome Spring with open arms.
LET'S GO OAK-LAND!

I feel bad for the guy.
In light of the Jason Kendall trade, maybe he thought he would be coming to Oakland with a starting job. Instead, he’s managed less than a whopping 100 PA’s this season. Sporadically. It’s hard to be successful in those conditions.

I actually like Bowen a lot
He seems to be a decent backstop, and usually has a good plan/approach at the plate (and is flexible in his approach — sometime going deep into counts, sometimes jumping on early meatballs).

He just seems like a good, solid hitting catcher.
Given some of the utter crap I’ve seen on other big-league teams, I don’t know why he isn’t getting a serious look at least elsewhere. Suzuki is clearly the way to go for the A’s, but I think Bowen could be successful as a starter on other teams.

Yeah but
Suzuki was a rookie and not established as a quality major-league catcher quite yet. It was reasonable to think that he may not pan out as an everyday catcher at that point. Bowen may have thought that he could at least compete with Suzuki for that job.
I’m talking about what Bowen may or may not have thought. It’s all speculative BS.

It was Cupcakes
Why it would be him I have no idea, but when Cupcakes was gone it just did something to me.
I liked him’n all, but in no way was he a favorite. He used to be our fourth or fifth starter, then he moved up to 1 or 2, then he was gone. Like all the rest.
Enough. Perhaps a long winter will bring back the Oakland flame, it always has, but we shall see. I miss all our people, and this is no way to run a franchise.

OT: I have to remember not to smile too much
Went back to the dentist yesterday for 2 root canals and a root extraction and the dentist said I have good news and Bad News, which do you want first.
Before I could answer, she said, “If I give you the good news you will already know what the bad news is because when I tell you, you will be able to figure out what the good news is”
So she said, “I will tell you anyway”
“The good news is you are going to save over $400.00 and the bad news is, I cannot do one of the root canals as the tooth is too far gone”
I said, “That’s great, I now look even worse when I smile”
She said, “I will give you some more good news and give you a "FREE” false tooth for the front to fix that"
Not to look a GIFT HORSE in the mouth (LOL), I asked why free and she said because she misdiagnosed the root canal and said she felt bad about it. I could care less as long as the gap is filled with a tooth and I have a whole top denture so what the hell is an extra one.
As an added bonus, the root canal she did, did not hurt one bit as she stuck the needle inside the tooth and deadened the nerve first. And then I got home in time to hear the start of the A’s game (Not that the result helped)

Depends on my work schedule.
I’ll usually go for an entire series or parts of two. I might make four or five trips a year and see anywhere from 10 to 18 games. I like to book a room in Pleasanton and hang out. You can book very nice rooms on priceline for around 40 bucks a night.

Pleasanton
is incredible. That’s what we have done this weekend. We booked a room at Four Points, and the place was very nice.
When we go, we only go for one day. But those must be fun trips to go for a series.
Do you usually go down to the dug out to speak to any of the players?

I've talked to a few.
I actually met Ziegler here in Fresno. I think Swisher was flirting with one of my daughters at fanfest. Bastard. But she got a kick out of it. Girls.
The four points is nice. I’ve stayed there many times. With the cost of gas it’s better to stay for a series.

But I think I have missed Ziegler here.

It’s so strange to wrap up in a blanket in July. I avoid the sun, even in Oakland. I’ll buy tickets under the overhang and use the Chevron discount.

I have not watched him of late
but he was not throwing his slider and that was the pitch he hurt is elbow with.
I’t odd how Devine goes 23 or 24 scoreless innings and this headcase cannot go 2 innings without doing the same because he appears to be afraid to throw the slider.

I've said it before
Denorfia needs a chance. A reeeaaall chance. I think an outfield of CarGon, Sweeney, Cunningham, Buck and Denorfia would be a great one defensively, and would definitely produce more than this year.
Cunningham and Buck could come off the bench, and give CarGon rest against tough left handers. It’s safe to say Emil won’t be back… I hope Davis is gone, as well as Murton.
