Great lineup, tough ballpark to pitch in, 5 IP, 2 runs – and without Cunningham dropping a fly ball it might be one run.

Compared to the run support...
Smith has had a stellar year. If I remember the stat I correctly, Smith had the second worst run support numbers in MLB history. He does a great job picking of runners as well.

He's a bit underrated on AN, I think -
He’ll finish the season with around 190 IP and an ERA around 4.00 with a BAA that’s 4th-5th in the league IIRC. As a rookie.

But then when he pitches really effectively in Arlington it's luck?
The guy has to pitch wherever the game is. He hasn’t been great but I think he’s been good. At the very least, he has been a legitimate innings-eater.

He's not all that hittable, he walks too many,
he never misses a start, he gets a fair number of swinging strikes – plenty to work on and plenty to like.
He’s a ROOKIE. They sometimes suddenly make strides forward.

Why choose that stat?
His xFIP is 5.32, and his tRA is 5.11 (tRA+ of 93).
His defense neutral stats are below average, and his stats based on batted ball profile is below average.
As I said below, he has a shot at league averageness. I just had higher hopes.

I guess DERA doesn't penalize for HR/Fly as much as xFIP

I don’t really remember if there was a definitive answer to the HR/Fly issue, but DERA is not adjusted for context like home stadium, and HRs fluctuate a lot. I seem to remember them being related to GB% too, and Smith doesn’t do so well in that dept.
regular old FIP uses HRs too but he’s still close to 5.

that you’d think everything that doesn’t match a good/poor ratio, or BABIP, or FIP, is “luck”. There are a lot of ways to win.

There may be a lot of ways to win, but many of them aren’t sustainable.
His periperals suggest he should have a RA of around 5 given neutral luck, defense, and stadium. That’s okay I guess, but it’s not very exciting either.

So what he needs to do is improve, in his second season,
as much as the “unsustainables” will catch up to him, and he’ll be as good as he was this year, only sustainably. I just think people easily forget that he’s a rookie. He’ll throw more strikes.
