How do you figure?

Great lineup, tough ballpark to pitch in, 5 IP, 2 runs – and without Cunningham dropping a fly ball it might be one run.

Compared to the run support...

Smith has had a stellar year. If I remember the stat I correctly, Smith had the second worst run support numbers in MLB history. He does a great job picking of runners as well.

by NotJohnnyDamon on Sep 22, 2008 7:12 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

He's a bit underrated on AN, I think -

He’ll finish the season with around 190 IP and an ERA around 4.00 with a BAA that’s 4th-5th in the league IIRC. As a rookie.

That's pitching in Oakland though

One of the hardest stadiums to hit in with one of the best team defenses in the majors behind him.

The A’s make pitch-to-contact guys look better than they are.

by MrIncognito on Sep 22, 2008 7:20 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

But then when he pitches really effectively in Arlington it's luck?

The guy has to pitch wherever the game is. He hasn’t been great but I think he’s been good. At the very least, he has been a legitimate innings-eater.

by WaddellCanseco on Sep 22, 2008 7:23 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

There’s value in 190 slightly below average innings, but like I said it’s not very exciting after the promising start to the season he had.

by MrIncognito on Sep 22, 2008 7:23 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

His DERA is 4.27. Is that really only "slightly below average"?

by WaddellCanseco on Sep 22, 2008 7:25 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

He's not all that hittable, he walks too many,

he never misses a start, he gets a fair number of swinging strikes – plenty to work on and plenty to like.

He’s a ROOKIE. They sometimes suddenly make strides forward.

by Nico on Sep 22, 2008 7:28 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Also he's never pitched this many innings.

If his reputation is really “below average” going forward, I think he might be underrated.

Yup, I kind of discount with a "grain of salt"

his stats for the last 50 innings, knowing he’s running on fumes at this point.

by Nico on Sep 22, 2008 7:31 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Why choose that stat?

His xFIP is 5.32, and his tRA is 5.11 (tRA+ of 93).

His defense neutral stats are below average, and his stats based on batted ball profile is below average.

As I said below, he has a shot at league averageness. I just had higher hopes.

by MrIncognito on Sep 22, 2008 7:31 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I guess DERA doesn't penalize for HR/Fly as much as xFIP

I don’t have a good feel for which is a better predictor. Can you enlighten me?

[Crosby] "Guy that has driven in some big runs for the A's over the years" - Vince Cotroneo

by WaddellCanseco on Sep 22, 2008 7:35 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I don’t really remember if there was a definitive answer to the HR/Fly issue, but DERA is not adjusted for context like home stadium, and HRs fluctuate a lot. I seem to remember them being related to GB% too, and Smith doesn’t do so well in that dept.

regular old FIP uses HRs too but he’s still close to 5.

by MrIncognito on Sep 22, 2008 7:47 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I wonder why the big difference then.

by WaddellCanseco on Sep 22, 2008 7:56 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

It's the 2 BB 1K facing 23 batters

It’s nice that it worked out for him today, but that’s extremely luck given the stadium.

by MrIncognito on Sep 22, 2008 7:18 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Meh - some get so obsessed with those peripherals

that you’d think everything that doesn’t match a good/poor ratio, or BABIP, or FIP, is “luck”. There are a lot of ways to win.

Pickoffs!

[Crosby] "Guy that has driven in some big runs for the A's over the years" - Vince Cotroneo

by WaddellCanseco on Sep 22, 2008 7:21 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

There may be a lot of ways to win, but many of them aren’t sustainable.

His periperals suggest he should have a RA of around 5 given neutral luck, defense, and stadium. That’s okay I guess, but it’s not very exciting either.

by MrIncognito on Sep 22, 2008 7:22 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

So what he needs to do is improve, in his second season,

as much as the “unsustainables” will catch up to him, and he’ll be as good as he was this year, only sustainably. I just think people easily forget that he’s a rookie. He’ll throw more strikes.

His stuff doesn't suggest better -

In a perfect world, he learns to paint and becomes Glavine-lite, but likely he peaks as a #3 if things roll right.

His peripherals say he's already league average

And I don’t think those take pickoffs into account.

No they don’t take pickoffs into account.
