That was a craptastic outing by Smith
I really hope he improves on this year, because I like him, but he really has been bad lately.
How do you figure?
Great lineup, tough ballpark to pitch in, 5 IP, 2 runs – and without Cunningham dropping a fly ball it might be one run.

I figure it's:
6th: Blevins
7th: Street
8th: Ziggy
9th: Devine
if the A’s keep the lead.
I like Cindi. A. She never pretends to know more than she does. B. She has unbridled enthusiasm for her "Hotties," and isn't afraid to show it. -IM4Oakgal
Compared to the run support...
Smith has had a stellar year. If I remember the stat I correctly, Smith had the second worst run support numbers in MLB history. He does a great job picking of runners as well.
by NotJohnnyDamon on Sep 22, 2008 7:12 PM PDT up reply actions
He's a bit underrated on AN, I think -
He’ll finish the season with around 190 IP and an ERA around 4.00 with a BAA that’s 4th-5th in the league IIRC. As a rookie.
I like Cindi. A. She never pretends to know more than she does. B. She has unbridled enthusiasm for her "Hotties," and isn't afraid to show it. -IM4Oakgal

That's pitching in Oakland though
One of the hardest stadiums to hit in with one of the best team defenses in the majors behind him.
The A’s make pitch-to-contact guys look better than they are.
But then when he pitches really effectively in Arlington it's luck?
The guy has to pitch wherever the game is. He hasn’t been great but I think he’s been good. At the very least, he has been a legitimate innings-eater.

There’s value in 190 slightly below average innings, but like I said it’s not very exciting after the promising start to the season he had.
His DERA is 4.27. Is that really only "slightly below average"?
[Crosby] "Guy that has driven in some big runs for the A's over the years" - Vince Cotroneo
by WaddellCanseco on Sep 22, 2008 7:25 PM PDT up reply actions
He's not all that hittable, he walks too many,
he never misses a start, he gets a fair number of swinging strikes – plenty to work on and plenty to like.
He’s a ROOKIE. They sometimes suddenly make strides forward.
I like Cindi. A. She never pretends to know more than she does. B. She has unbridled enthusiasm for her "Hotties," and isn't afraid to show it. -IM4Oakgal
Also he's never pitched this many innings.
If his reputation is really “below average” going forward, I think he might be underrated.

I like Cindi. A. She never pretends to know more than she does. B. She has unbridled enthusiasm for her "Hotties," and isn't afraid to show it. -IM4Oakgal
Why choose that stat?
His xFIP is 5.32, and his tRA is 5.11 (tRA+ of 93).
His defense neutral stats are below average, and his stats based on batted ball profile is below average.
As I said below, he has a shot at league averageness. I just had higher hopes.
I guess DERA doesn't penalize for HR/Fly as much as xFIP
I don’t have a good feel for which is a better predictor. Can you enlighten me?
[Crosby] "Guy that has driven in some big runs for the A's over the years" - Vince Cotroneo
by WaddellCanseco on Sep 22, 2008 7:35 PM PDT up reply actions
I don’t really remember if there was a definitive answer to the HR/Fly issue, but DERA is not adjusted for context like home stadium, and HRs fluctuate a lot. I seem to remember them being related to GB% too, and Smith doesn’t do so well in that dept.
regular old FIP uses HRs too but he’s still close to 5.
I wonder why the big difference then.
[Crosby] "Guy that has driven in some big runs for the A's over the years" - Vince Cotroneo
by WaddellCanseco on Sep 22, 2008 7:56 PM PDT up reply actions
It's the 2 BB 1K facing 23 batters
It’s nice that it worked out for him today, but that’s extremely luck given the stadium.
Meh - some get so obsessed with those peripherals
that you’d think everything that doesn’t match a good/poor ratio, or BABIP, or FIP, is “luck”. There are a lot of ways to win.

[Crosby] "Guy that has driven in some big runs for the A's over the years" - Vince Cotroneo
by WaddellCanseco on Sep 22, 2008 7:21 PM PDT up reply actions
There may be a lot of ways to win, but many of them aren’t sustainable.
His periperals suggest he should have a RA of around 5 given neutral luck, defense, and stadium. That’s okay I guess, but it’s not very exciting either.
So what he needs to do is improve, in his second season,
as much as the “unsustainables” will catch up to him, and he’ll be as good as he was this year, only sustainably. I just think people easily forget that he’s a rookie. He’ll throw more strikes.
I like Cindi. A. She never pretends to know more than she does. B. She has unbridled enthusiasm for her "Hotties," and isn't afraid to show it. -IM4Oakgal
he has a shot at league averageness
I just thought he was going to be better.
His stuff doesn't suggest better -
In a perfect world, he learns to paint and becomes Glavine-lite, but likely he peaks as a #3 if things roll right.
I like Cindi. A. She never pretends to know more than she does. B. She has unbridled enthusiasm for her "Hotties," and isn't afraid to show it. -IM4Oakgal

If a lefty comes up, they should go to Embree IMO

I would totally go to Embree right now.

The trouble with lefties is starting to come back.
Not a good thing.

Ziggy vs Blalock
I was more uncomfortable with that as with Texiera… same result!!!
Runs Please. A lot of them. The rest of the season. Thank you.

This is the principle again of if you throw 4 guys,
someone won’t be at his best. In a pennant race, I’d hope Geren would have pitched Street for two, Devine the 9th, given tired Ziggy the day off.

Why is CoCo county always hiring cops?

Thank goodness Dellums eradicated all crime in Oakland
Now we can focus on the last five games for the A’s

I hope you're kidding.
Those guys don’t make very much money.

Everywhere is always hiring cops, don't you think?
There were recruiting ads for Oakland PD and BART police at the ballpark yesterday.
Don't blame me, I voted for Bill King.

Not really.
Oakland PD and BART seem to though. CoCo county for that matter. BART seems like a decent job. CoCo county always seemed okay too.

Didn't Geren say he went to Ziggy in the 8th because of the LHB's
They were there in abundance tonight so there was no getting around it but I think as good as Ziggy has been, he will be yielding to Devine next season because Devine gets everyone out.
Meet Jack Hannahan, He has a broken clock and like all broken clocks, it's right twice a day
I would hope Ryan is going to fill out
and someday we’ll look back at 2008 footage and say “ha! Ryan was so skinny!”
i hope the same for SpartaCust

For girls to come to the stadium
which in turn means guys will go just cause there will be a ton of girls.
Perfect!
The girls might then ask the guys to team up on each other, but umm, we’ll cross that bridge when we get to it. (Team it up with a Dollar Beer Day?)
That may be too much hotness for me to handle, but i’d sure try

according to ESPN, crosby’s only hot zone is right in the middle of the strike zone…
