Open Game Thread: Game 156 - Oakland A's at Texas Rangers

Oakland Athletics @ Texas Rangers

The battle for second place in the AL West rages on.  If you had told me before the season started that the A's starting pitcher who would make the most starts would be Greg Smith, I would tell you that the A's would be in line for last place in the AL West.  It's not that Greg Smith isn't a good pitcher, it's just that I would honestly have believed that the team was destined for mediocrity at best.

Smith starts tonight in Arlington against Kevin Millwood.  Can you believe that there are only five games left after tonight?  Any way, here is what the starters' stats look like this year:

W-L G GS CG SHO SV BS IP H R ER HR BB K ERA WHIP
2008 - Greg Smith 7-15 30 30 2 0 0 0 178.1 158 84 81 20 83 107 4.09 1.35

W-L G GS CG SHO SV BS IP H R ER HR BB K ERA WHIP
2008 - Kevin Millwood 9-9 27 27 3 0 0 0 155.2 203 96 89 17 47 113 5.15 1.61

Smith's issues this year have obviously been the free pass.  Millwood's issues this year have related to the fact that he's been very, very hittable.

The A's have been really damn good lately.  They've won three in a row and seven out of the last 10.  Course they're doing it when it doesn't matter at all any more and I'd almost prefer that they get a better draft position.  I think Smoak was taken one pick ahead of them last year.  Imagine if the Rangers wind up right there again this year and steal someone the A's could've used.  Any way, I'm not going to complain about the team playing good baseball, I guess I just wish that it happened a lot sooner than this.

Here are the lineups for tonight:

This September has been fun seeing Buck come back up and not look completely lost at the plate.  Hopefully it was just an aberration with him.  It's also been fun to watch Cunningham up with the big club.  2008 is almost in the books already.  Wow, seems like it was just yesterday I was talking about a Tigers/D'Backs World Series and the Mariners finishing above the A's in the AL West.  D'oh!

LET'S GO A'S!!!!!!!

I picked the A's to win the AL West.

Of course I do that almost every year. Probably not next year though.

I like that Baisley, Pennington, Cunningham and Buck are getting at bats.

Good experience for them and gives the front office an extended window to evaluate them.

Awesome, but I want to know

why Petit isn’t getting a few ABs as well?

Now with 100% more Canuck.

by Blicks on Sep 22, 2008 5:34 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

i really like seeing that too. It’s the only exciting thing at the end of this season anyhow. It is great to see them getting some at bats under their belts. Love it. Oh, that and greeeeg smith pitching tonight

Blez, you picked us third

Seems you thought we were already headed for mediocrity. ;)

I felt like jumping on a plane to Texas this morning

and landing in Seattle at the end of the week.

But he came back. And there was much rejoicing.

What are you doing tomorrow? I'll meet you at baggage claim at Love Field.

I guess I could sell my car… and a kidney… maybe my bobble village. It would be worth it.

But he came back. And there was much rejoicing.

I almost hopped in the car and headed to BART for the game today.

Then I remembered that BART doesn’t go all the way to Texas. Dang.

See above.

I’ll meet you at baggage claim.

Look at that hair! Ewww.

by whiteshoes40 on Sep 22, 2008 5:08 PM PDT   0 recs

Those are wigs.

They are actually pretty good. They were on “America’s Got Talent”

But he came back. And there was much rejoicing.

by Jennifer on Sep 22, 2008 5:09 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Oh good, I thought they were wigs.

I haven’t really watched “America’s Got Talent.” David Hasselhoff bothers me.

That was funny.

A bit of a disconnect—classical music and redneck outfits. But they were pretty good.

I'm really glad we aren't the rangers

I can’t imagine how horrible it would be to be stuck with Michael Young’s contract.

Rich Harden continues to torture me

I bought tickets to see him at Shea tomorrow, and of course he gets pushed back at the last minute.

Why did I even fall for it?!

I waited til 48 hours before game time before believing that he would really stick, thinking that was cutting it close enough. NOPE.

Or listen to my iPod.

But he came back. And there was much rejoicing.

by Jennifer on Sep 22, 2008 5:22 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I can't get much sadder.

I’ll go read the DLD and wallow.

by schmifty on Sep 22, 2008 5:25 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Haha.

It wasn’t supposed to be that depressing. Oh well.

by whiteshoes40 on Sep 22, 2008 5:26 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I think it's because I haven't taken my meds in a few days.

But I always get sad this time of year. Sigh.

I've been thinking lately.

What am I gonna do with those extra three hours in my day? Schoolwork? No. Hmmmm….

by Kimberly on Sep 22, 2008 5:33 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I'm going to finally start using my Netflix subscription.

I keep sending stuff back unwatched cuz I just don’t have the time, between watching a Mets game at 7 and an A’s game at 10 every night.

by schmifty on Sep 22, 2008 5:36 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I don’t like this inning so far, can we skip it?

by justarebelheart on Sep 22, 2008 5:20 PM PDT   0 recs

At least no black jerseys today.

One very, very small victory.

by schmifty on Sep 22, 2008 5:21 PM PDT   0 recs

The road grays should be mandatory. Of course the home whites should too.

I thought my head was going to implode from all the information people were throwing at me today. I just wanna sit, be lazy, and eat cake dang it.
