Stewart blames Jose for '90 WS loss.
Did anyone see the interview stew did with CBS 5 Gameday. He blamed Canseco for the 1990 world series loss. He said one player did not want to be there. He questioned if he was being payed off by a bookie to lose because his play and attitude were so bad. He said it is hard for one player to be blamed for a loss. But when one of your best players doesn't care or want to be there, it's very hard.
Found this interview kind of surprising and shocking. Wonder why so many years later this is the first we have heard any mention of anything like this? (at least that I have really heard) It seemed like stored up frustration and very hurt over it.
He mentioned just good things about McGwire on the other hand.
He also said good things about the current team. He thinks they will be very good, very soon.

Not the first I heard of it
I know that La Russa and Jose clashed that Series. There were a lot of reasons we lost that Series, including Stew’s poor outing in Game 1. I understand being upset, but come on, we got swept. One player can’t be the blame for that.
I'm here to talk about the past.

Agreed.
It was an embarrassing sweep. I forget most of the minute details now, but I have always laid alot of the blame on LaRussa and some of his moves, which is unusual for me as I tend to believe that it’s the players who play the game and ultimately win or lose.

La Russa
has been very public about Jose not playing hard for him, especially in reference to the 1990 WS. One of the things he quoted Canseco as saying was something along the lines of “Playoffs again! I’m tired of playoffs. I want this season to be over so I can go fishing and do other stuff.” La Russa said that this bad attitude affected the entire team. So maybe that’s what Stew means.
As for the bookie stuff, that’s the first that I ever heard of that reference being made. But Canseco did hang out with some shady people, and even guys like Pete Rose and Michael Jordan have been rumored to have had a serious gambling problems.

Ug
That series still sticks in my craw. The A’s came into that series with a lot of swagger. I don’t usually buy into such things, but when Rickey took that called third strike to lead off game 1 you could almost hear the air whoosh right out of the dugout. Then Eric Davis hit the homer and I swear the A’s lost right there. People might not recall but the A’s were expected to just blow out the Reds, and the whole dialogue and “feel” of what was happening changed right there.
One of the major storylines of the series was that LaRussa and Canseco were openly fighting. I think it was during or just before it started when Mrs. Canseco called LaRussa a “little punk” or something like that. I remember her getting interviewed in the stands right after Canseco hit his solo homerun in Game 2 and alluding to the feud as well.

I hear ya...
…that one still gets to me. 1988 I can live with. It was a fluke. Even players like Hershisher admitted it publicly the next year. Fine, flukes happen.
1990 was just inexcusable, IMHO.
I will say, though, that if we could only win one, at least we beat the Giants.

Game 2
A’s were leading late … didn’t Canseco misplay a ball in RF that should’ve been caught? I seem to remember that play as being the turning point.
The details are fuzzy for me too, and I don’t feel like hunting the internet for them … but I seem to remember we were up like 4-2, and ended up losing 5-4.
I needed a team so I wouldn’t turn into one of the eighty million pink hat-wearing Bud Light-drinking mulleted idiots at Fenway.

I recall that play as well
But I also recall that Jose homered to give the A’s their 4-2 lead. Of course, that was his one and only hit of the Series (just as he had done in the ’88 Classic).

Rudi also said nice things about the 2008 A's
when Buan interviewed him during the game yesterday. He said they reminded him of the 1968 A’s, with its good young players.
I also doubt that the 1990 loss is the fault of one player.

Canseco cared about Canseco- no one else
I think his entire stay at Oakland could be summed up on that one sentence- Canseco cared about Canseco. It seemed that he was always relying on his steroid body to smash the homeruns out of the park and caring nothing about developing his outfield talents (he had none). I’ll never forget the ball bouncing off of his head. Other than Terrence Long, Canseco will always be my least favorite image of Oakland.

Singleton walked (with his bat on his shoulder, swinging at nothing)
prior to Melhuse striking out. And I was pissed. That’s it. Everything else I’m confusing with T-Long, whose post-game anti Macha rant now seems prophetic.

I was starting to question my memory. It was T-Long and Melhuse who sat there
and did nothing with the bases loaded. All of that preceded scumbag derrick lowe’s obscene gesture toward the A’s dugout. I’ll never forgive that POS till the day I die.

Actually greenmachine
Canseco had incredible natural talent to begin with. So much so that they moved him from LF to Right just a season or two into his career.
The problem, as you mentioned, is he absolutely quit working on his game, and at that point, things went downhill.
Bottom line … if Canseco stays hungry and works hard, he’s a Hall of Famer … easy. He and Darryl Strawberry are two guys who could’ve owned baseball had they been able to discipline themselves. Hate their antics all you want, but they were too unbelievably gifted athletes who pissed away their talent. But they had talent, no question.

I'm not sure how much Canseco was a gifted athlete and how much he was a steroid
creation. I find it very hard to believe he would throw a World Series though.

"Throwing" a game/series implies intent...
…and I don’t believe he intended to lose. Instead, I believe he was apathetic. Win? Ok, that’s cool. Lose? Sure, whatever, I’m still gettin’ paid.

I don't believe he was apathetic since he did take all the steroids and helped others
with weight training and steroids too. I can easily believe that he got a little full of himself after the early success and stopped working hard though, in addition to bringing the marital problems to work with him. He wouldn’t be the first athlete that put celebrity ahead of their sports job — I’m looking at you David Beckham and Anna Kournikouva. Also I remember him playing with an injury in that series.

He was even briefly a good right fielder
Or at least one who tried for a while. He went through a period (88? 89?) when he realized he could get on sportscenter for sliding catches as well as HRs and for a while was making a bunch of them, and everybody was talking about what a great RF he was turning into. Didn’t last.

Another thing hard to swallow about '90
The “Curse of the Hatchers” continued. First Mickey in ‘88, then Billy in ’90. Just friggin’ unbelievable. Seems like we got Billy Hatcher out … I don’t know … twice? the whole damn series. He hit everything. I’ve never seen anything like it.
Oh, and that short-bus ridin’ Chris Sabo, too. He with the goggles that actually set the field on fire if the sun hit ’em just right. I think he still uses a sippy-cup. What a jerk.

I thought the Reds were a pretty even match for the A's that year. I certainly didn't expect a sweep.
I wasn’t surprised Rijo was tough, but I was surprised we couldn’t hit either of their lefties.

Mickey Hatcher is one of my top 5 least favorite players ever.
In fact, I hated the whole 1980’s Twinkies teams. I know, everyone is supposed to love Kirby Puckett (RIP) and his lovable band of fellas, but without that joke of a stadium they don’t win anything. And they were annoying as hell. I hated them.

I remember Szabo from that series
and Hatcher, and the ridiculous way the A’s rolled over with Rijo pitching. There was too much swagger with the A’s in the post-season by then…they tried to “mail it in”. It was about like the Rockies playing the Red Sox last year, but no one expected the Rockies to win four games, just two or one. 4-0??!!
I’m getting to like the “playoffs” prior to the World Series less and less. My latest evolution: play 130 games in each league, until August 31st. Then the six best teams play only each other for the last 30 games (3 home, 3 away, versus five other teams). At the end of 160 games, the best record goes to the WS…period…. no further playoffs after 160 games. The “also-ran” eight teams who have records worse than the top six, also play each other for the last 30 games, but no chance to go to the WS or “playoffs”…they can play their rookies, and Sept callups, like the A’s and Mariners. did this year.
Runs Please. A lot of them. The rest of the season. Thank you.

I will remember the positives about Jose. He was incredibly exciting to watch. A bright star that flamed out for sure. I think it was a cheap shot of Stew to introduce the idea of the game(s) being thrown. 1990 ALCS was a blast and I was sitting in the CF bleachers witha broom when Clemens flipped le grande bird at the ump. Remember Eric Davis trying to catch that ball and tearing his spleen or something and that old windbag of an owner saying she would fly him home with her dog?

I think the bookie comment takes it too far.
Just from an Occam’s razor point of view, there’s no reason to reach for a far-fetched explanation (ie, that Jose deliberately threw the game for money and has succeeded in hiding his crime since then) when there’s a much simpler explanation ready at hand (ie, that Jose just didn’t give a shit).
