Open Thread: Game 155 - A's vs. Mariners

Hear ye! Hear ye! Today marketh the final home game of the A's 2008 season, so if you're up anywhere near the Bay today make an honest effort to swing by the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum at some point. Even if you've become estranged from the current sub-.500 A's ballclub there will still be plenty of reminders on display of more successful/exciting times of the organization's past, as the team looks to put an exlamanation point on it's season-long celebration of it's 40th year anniversary of residence in the East Bay. The team will be officially commemorating it's "All-40 year team" on the field before first pitch. Rickey Henderson, Dave Stewart, Terry Steinbach, Joe Rudi and Bert Campenaris will be in attendance for the event, so if you're longing to see an Oakland Athletic that will be looked on favorably in the history books for setting all-time records that don't revolve around single-season strikeout totals, then check out Rickey throwing out today's first pitch.

The start time for today's game will be delayed until 1:15 for all of the festivities, but once the game begins, it should prove to be an intriguing matchup. The A's, who have finally been playing consistently acceptable baseball, now find themselves only 1.5 games back of the Rangers for 2nd place in the division (1 game back in the loss column). With a 4-game set in Arlington beginning tomorrow, an Oakland win today combined with a Texas loss would bring the two teams into a virtual tie and would add a little spice to the final roadtrip of the season. Regardless, with a win today, the A's will sweep this pathetic posse from the Pacific Northwest and roll into the Arlington bandbox with some major momentum.

Today's pitching matchup features two young, hard-throwing right-handers with command problems. The A's send Sean Gallagher to the mound, fresh off his winning 7-inning, 1 run, 6 strikeout performance against the Angels last week. One of the more pleasant developments of late with this young team has been the re-emergence of both Gallagher and Eveland. In a year where so many young starters have struggled for long stretches of time, it inspires confidence in both the pitchers themselves and the coaching and medical staffs when Eveland can go down to the minors, re-work his mechanics and return to the majors showing vast improvement just over a two-week timeframe, while Gallagher can rest a tired arm on the DL for a few weeks, come back with his velocity back up into the mid-90s and within two starts off the list, begin to resemble the pitcher the team traded away an ace for. Sean will be making his first career start against the Mariners today.

Opposing Gallagher will be Cal-Berkeley alum and North Bay native Brandon Morrow. The 6th overall selection in the 2006 draft, Morrow zipped through the minors, spending only the tail end of 2006 in the low minors before making his major league debut as a reliever last season for the M's. Brandon can hit the upper 90's with his heater consistently, but he has had major command issues his entire career, dating back to college. He's very tough to hit, doesn't give up a lot of homers and racks up the K's, so it should be an interesting day for A's hitters. Patience will be key. It would be nice to see a cleanly-played, well-pitched, well-officiated game where the A's squeak by in the bottom of the 9th after exhausting their entire 40-man roster a la yesterday.

Whatever happens, I'm just hoping that the home fans can show this team some major love in their final appearance in Oakland. It's been a strange, rollercoaster of a year so far, but these young guys have some major talent and with several late-inning and walk-off victories already to their credit, it should be clear that while the "W's" haven't been easy to get at some points this season, this team has never given up. That fact, more than anything else, is the main reason why, win or lose this game, this team should walk off the field today feeling the full-fledged support of both the A's fans in-house applauding them as well as the greater Athletics Nation that has followed them throughout the year. They deserve it.

I am hoping Crosby gets "Kotsayed" this off-season.

That is, I am hoping Beane will just offer to pay all or most of his 2009 salary just to get him off the roster. Then I’d hope Beane would go after JJ Hardy…

I don't think McGwire is in attendance today.

Ehhh, it's a tough call.

I would like for the current corps of players to end this season with some confidence going forward, since we will be counting on them in 2009 and 2010 at least before anybody from next year’s draft even makes their major league debut.

But if we had lost just a game or two more last season, we would have Justin Smoak in the system now instead of Jemile Weeks, so it’s a tough call…

and like I said, I’m sure he was foaming at the mouth when it appeared that he might fall to the A’s at 12 overall, but overall, I think it’s better for the organization as a whole to try to win every game they play. That’s the point of baseball right?

2nd place or better draft pick

if A’s win today they’d get win 74 and be 1/2 game behind texas…plus a decent pass to match or pass 76 wins from 07

these past 2 weeks probabl ended their chances of a top 8 pick or so

right now, 12th worst record, but remember nats have an extra pick not signing crowe

so they’d be pushed to pick 13, maybe 14 if they pass rangers

I can't believe this game was not televised!

Typical bullshit from the t.v. contract………….

by mrod on Sep 21, 2008 3:48 PM PDT reply actions

This one was truly unbelievable

A home game, the last home game of the season. The fact that the A’s can’t/won’t get this televised shows how lacking the A’s marketing/PR/everything is.

And the last two games were so fun!

It’s a shame. At least I could watch the M’s feed on MLB.TV today.

Mariners feed- Who was the guy with the AN shirt

at the end of the game? Anyone? Bueller?

Looking forward to Spring Training and the hope of another World Series title.

And like I was saying

Yesterday was a great game to be at because it was “fun and had lots of action” and because because I was at the Coliseum and not at home, I was “able to watch the game!”

by mrod on Sep 21, 2008 3:54 PM PDT up reply actions

Sorry about that. It was nice to see someone representing the old white AN

shirt sitting behind the A’s dugout. That was my first AN shirt and it was a complimentary one because I got the HUGE AN poster on TV in KC. Sweet.

Looking forward to Spring Training and the hope of another World Series title.

Oh, that wasn't me today!

I was at the game yesterday and I was wearing my #58 Duke jersey. And I was sitting right behind Lew Woolfe. He was sitting with the ex-mayor of San Jose, Tom McEnry and his grandkids………..pretty neat.

I was wearing the white "Athletics Nation" t-shirt

over my grey sweatshirt.

Could not find my “rare” visitors A’s cap (white letter on green) before I left, so I had on a beige “UCSB” ballcap.

Runs Please. A lot of them. The rest of the season. Thank you.

I was at the game in my AN shirt

with a gray sweatshirt underneath it.

Was it me?? Behind 3rd base dugout about forty rows up???

I have a lot of family who are Mariner fans in Seattle.

And

Comcast plus was not airing anything……so WTF?

Good thing the tickets are staying the same price next year otherwise things would be looking even bleaker…Sounds like it was a good game. I’ll have to go back and review what happened with the post game show. Glad that Cust got #30 today!

Season tix should go up by $10 for every game that the team finishes

above the AL West. Should go down by $10 for the opposite too.

Looking forward to Spring Training and the hope of another World Series title.

Yeah, I'd MUCH rather watch scrubs than watch "Scrubs"

A's are doing their best to help M's

get Strasburg…we might regret this a few yrs from now

by Asfan4ever723 on Sep 21, 2008 3:53 PM PDT reply actions

It's the M's.

If they get Strasburg, he’ll blow his arm out in his rookie year.

No more A's home games?!?!

Denial… anger… reality sinking in… depression… acceptance.

Depression.

I'm all the way back to denial,

which is why I’m going out to the Coliseum tomorrow.

See you there!

I got a great deal on tickets for tomorrow’s game from this totally non-suspicious and honest looking guy I met just now out behind Wal-Mart! He promised he’d deliver them this afternoon. I can’t wait!

You're welcome.

And thanks again for putting Ibanez in left.

You're welcome.

Agreed with IowaA’sFan- thanks for putting Raul in left.

Apologies on Miss Bedard’s 2008 and injuries, that must hurt. I really liked the guy, always have. It was a hometown thing.

And Jeff’s GIFs are pure win.

Now with 100% more Canuck.
