Harden to skip next start....says no arm issues....

I think that there has been a huge division in the A's fanbase on the Harden trade as many have blasted Beane for trading a seemingly healthy Harden. However, all is not golden in the land of flameouts:

Sep. 2 News: 9:37 AM

Harden, whose velocity has slipped a little, will have his next start skipped, however he insists that there is no problem with his arm, the Chicago Tribune reports.

This sort of "developement" on Harden is something that we A's fans are very familiar with: slipping velocity, denial of problems, then the inevitible DL trip. I am not here to say, I told you so.....but as many have said all along: this trade was advantageous to BOTH the Cub's and the A's. The Cubs get a very short term front end elite pitcher for the playoffs, while the A's continuing restocking their farm system. I still think Harden is a very special player...when healthy, and i hope the Cubs take special care of the glass cannon so he can step up during their WS run.

edit: found the original Chicago Tribune article but seems to indicate that this was planned, albeit skipping 2 starts was somewhat unexpected.

update: Rotoworld comments from Harden

"I’ve been feeling pretty good, but I guess I’ve had a little bit of discomfort you could call it. But nothing serious," he said. It's always serious when it comes to Harden. He'll go 11 days without pitching before attempting to return to the mound next week.

15 Day DL...here we come!

personally i hope he's not hurt and he does well

remember we traded him after a couple of “dead arm” starts where he could hardly hit 90.

I've made my peace with the trade...

I was leaning 55-45 in support of the trade when it happened and i think i’m still there. We received a couple of nice pieces that we’ll still have when we’re contending again. If we would’ve kept Harden, we still wouldn’t be in the playoff run and he wouldn’t have him when we can contend again because some team would roll the dice and sign him to a big contract as a FA.

Could we have received more? I don’t know… and it doesn’t really matter at this point.

I hope Harden pitches like a star the rest of the year. We all know that he’ll get hurt at some point.

I have issues with the Harden trade...

…but the fact that he was (seemingly) heallty finally isn’t one of them. Mainly, because I don’t believe he ever will stay healthy for any extended period of time. I would be fine if he did and did well, for his sake as I like him, but I’m not betting the house on it.

At the time of the trade, I predicted

that Harden would pitch great and get hurt around Sept 1st – score one for the Neekster! I agree that this trade will help both teams – the Cubs already got a lot of what they needed, and may still have Harden for post-season start(s). And I’m glad the A’s have Donaldson, Outman, Gallagher – and not the headache of wondering when Harden will break.

Yep

I doubt he’s hurt. Just another ‘dead arm’ period. Rest him in September so you can start him in October. Makes perfect sense. More sense than A’s Management would make out of the situation.

Exactly, oakinboston

Until he goes on the DL, then there can’t be any “I told you so’s”.

Talk to me when and if he gets placed on the disabled list … until that happens, then it still looks like a very one-sided trade. It may not in the future, but as of right now, no contest.

I needed a team so I wouldn’t turn into one of the eighty million pink hat-wearing Bud Light-drinking mulleted idiots at Fenway.

Not that it matters much, but I think Patterson (not Outman) was shipped with Gallagher and Donaldson.

I strongly disagree with the statement that the Cubs already got a lot of what they needed

I think that trade was completely unjustifiable from their standpoint except insofar as it helped their playoff roster (and their 2009 roster), much as the Teixeira trade was completely unjustifiable except insofar as it helped the Angels’ playoff roster.

Both of those teams were practically locks for the playoffs before they acquired their “big gun.”

cubs can afford that luxury

to sit harden for now, since they are so far ahead in that division. we’ll see if it hurts them or not come playoff time. it was said, any trade wit harden would not be a win because his immense upside. but he teased us, and is one of the main reasons this 04-08 teams did not quite reach expectations. there was urgency there, if you believe them cubs were the only team they talked to. if gallagher/donaldson turn into a #2 sp type and above avg 3b or C type then it isnt too bad. i didnt see the urgency in throwing gaudin or getting a murton/patterson. if that part of the deal was tweaked maybe the trade would look a bit better. plus cubs were able to hold onto decent depth in case of a harden injury with gaudin/maybe hill/marquis etc around. mayhe the A’s will surprise us and actually spend some of that 7mill saved from harden and get a big bat.

Lou Piniella's quote on the issue was a weeee bit different from Hendry's:
“Obviously, if he could pitch, we would’ve kept him in the rotation,” Piniella said.

Innnteresting.

Rich had another funny start like this a few weeks ago (low velocity, no control, walked everybody, only 2Ks, looked uncomfortable, only 5IP). Somehow he didn’t let up any runs, but he was clearly way off. When I mentioned on BCB that Harden didn’t look right, I was met with “What part of 0ER don’t you understand?”. Okay then. He couldn’t possibly have anything wrong with him if he didn’t let up any runs… right.

Your Kool-Aid is just a different flavor than theirs ...

As you say, only blind faith despite the evidence would lead someone to the conclusion that “Hey, he’s totally healthy, there’s nothing to worry about.”

On the other hand, it would be equally erroneous to conclude “He’s done for the season.” In fact, Rich had two similarly troubling five-inning starts at the close of his tenure with the A’s, leading many to believe he’d go to the DL soon after the trade. Instead, his numbers in his 9 starts since the trade: 54 IP, 9 ER, 31 H, 18 BB, 75 K.

Oh yeah, the start didn’t have me thinking ’he’s out for the season’ – it just had me wondering if anything was up. Whereas a few Cubs fans were insisting that “This is a very good start! He gave up ZERO runs – you can’t do better than that!” when there were other elements to take into consideration.

(I’m still rooting for Rich, I can’t help it)

by schmifty on Sep 3, 2008 12:53 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

It's not necessarily about being out for the season

But what if he rests now, and then has a couple of okay starts, and is still in his sorta dead-arm, “I can pitch but I’m not that dominant” self for the postseason?

They want a 7IP, 3H, 2BB, 9K Harden for the playoffs, not the guy who gives up walks and hits and is out before the 6th.

He was “back” but he was rusty and not dominant.

So Nick, do you support my prediction that both the A’s and Royals will probably get swept in tomorrow’s double-header?

Unless the A’s start their pitching coach in game 1 and some 55-year-old guy named Lary in game 2. Then they’ll sweep.

He may just be tired from pitching so much..

As a pitcher myself (although maybe not quite as frickin awesome as Harden), if you are not used to throwing the same amount each year, and one year you throw over what you did last year, its going to take a toll on your arm. Harden not only didn’t hardly pitch last year but he has had to ease up on his conditiong just to be cautious, so he’s probably alot weaker..
He may not be injured but I’m thinking his arm probably needs a rest. He’s also not the most economical pitcher, he tends to have these spurts where he can’t find the zone for a bit..

Is that Embry warming up?....... NOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooo!!!!!!!!!

The part of me that loves Rich—which is most of me—hopes that he’s okay and dominates the NL for the rest of the year.

The bitter part of me—the part that doesn’t want him to pitch for anybody if he can’t pitch for us, because I miss him and I’m jealous of Cubs fans—wants him to be done for the season.

I’m evil.

ERA Title

Harden’s run at the ERA title is likely over. He has 131 innings pitched and would need 162 (provided the Cubs play all 162) in order to qualify. At his pace he would have been pretty close (he pitched 29.2 over his last 5 starts), and likely would have had 5 starts in September. With a 1.99 ERA he would have led the Majors in ERA, (although technically likely wouldn’t lead either league since he pitched in both). I suppose he could still have 5 starts in September, but that seems unlikely.

Anyhow, I would have liked to see him lead the bigs in ERA, but I also would have liked to see him be healthy in Oakland for a full year, and never got that.

From the Chicago Sun-Times:
After three days of dancing around the questions and being sternly non-specific, Cubs manager Lou Piniella finally said Wednesday that starter Rich Harden has ’’discomfort’’ in his pitching arm, which is why the Cubs chose now to skip him a full turn in the rotation.

Harden confirmed Piniella’s description but insisted the discomfort in his right shoulder is ‘’nothing serious’’ and that — contrary to what Piniella said — he could have taken his turn if the team wanted.
‘’Look, if he were available to pitch today, or tomorrow, or the next day, why would we wait for St. Louis?’’ Piniella said when pressed on the reason for Harden being given 11 days between starts. ’’Doesn’t that make sense? He’s not available right now is all I’m trying to tell you. And he’s going to be available for the St. Louis series.’’

Pressed again, Piniella revealed the ‘’discomfort.’’

Harden, who denied Tuesday he was feeling pain in his arm, was asked if that was accurate.

‘’No, I’ve been feeling pretty good,‘’ he said. ’’[…] but I’ve had a little bit of, I guess you could call it discomfort, but nothing serious.’’

Im over from BCB with some Rich Harden injury questions

Since you guys would prolly be “experts” with his signs of being hurt.

1. Does he admit to being injured when it happens, or does he try and hide it, maybe even play through it?
2. Discomfort- when they say that about Harden, what does that tend to mean? More serious injury?
3. Lets say Harden is hurt, but could be able to pitch through that pain if it came down to it. (playoffs). Would he pitch, or would be say he is too hurt to pitch?

Thanks, and sorry about Murton.

Others may remember the patern better, but here's how I remember it:

-misses a start, but it really isn’t an issue, just discomfort, or tenderness.
-next start pushed back 2 days as a precautionary move.
-goes on the 15 day DL. It isn’t necessary, but the team needs a spot starter. The plan is that he will come off and start the first day he is eligible.
-Has a set back in a throwing session from 200 feet and is advised to shut all throwing down for 2 more weeks, then begin a slow rehab process.
-2 months later he will begin throwing again.

While I hope this is not the case now, that is what we saw each time.

You will get a variety of opinions on this

Harden has had several stints on the DL and a few other times like this one when he “didn’t feel quite right,” including just before the trade. But he has never needed surgery, and I only remember one time when he went out there and obviously shouldn’t have been (his one start in between times on the DL last July).

Some people take this to mean that he’s just afraid to pitch through any discomfort at all, while others think that he must have some underlying serious problem that is going to finally blow up and require surgery soon. I’m not really convinced either way, and in the last year or so pretty much resigned myself to the attitude of “don’t expect too much, but enjoy what you get.”

Overqualified to be an A's fan.

by andeux on Sep 4, 2008 10:23 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

what andeux said, plus ...

I think what Rich says to the media depends in large part on how he feels he’s being treated (in both senses of the word) by the front office and medical/training staff. If Rich’s arm is hanging on by shreds of tendon and skin and his bones are throwing up sparks, but the team doctors/trainers are respecting Rich’s opinion/feedback on his own health, he’ll say he’s fine. If there’s only the most minor/usual discomfort that every MLB pitcher experiences, but Piniella and the coaches are telling him to man up and rub some dirt on it, then Rich will be more likely to approach or respond to the media with more openness about every little detail of sensation in his arm.

All of a sudden his elbow doesn’t feel quite right and he is gone for 3 months.

Everyone bangs on Billy for trading away a lot for nothing but I have to say I am glad that we have what we have in Patterson and Gallagher and a potential trade piece in Murton down the road.

by HRH on Sep 4, 2008 10:32 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I basically agree with what andeux said

1. He tends not to try to play through injuries; or it arguable that he tries to play through initially, but quickly stops until he feels completely right. It seems as though he expresses more candor about what he is feeling to the team than to the media.

2. In the past, that has led to long DL stints, most of which were initially reported as minor, some of which it was even reported afterwards that he would make his next start, and then the next one, etc. Will that happen this time? That would not be a surprise, but on the other hand, who knows… No one has told us what the injury (or "discomfort") is, and he hasn’t had the same injury twice so far. So I don’t think one can really infer that this time will be like prior times.

3. That has not really come up, as his injuries have happened in the first half of the season, never at crucial times. My guess would be that he would try to pitch in the playoffs while experiencing arm pain, because he is both very competitive, and at this point concerned for his reputation, which is related to the fact that pitching in the playoffs vs. not pitching likely could stakes of tens of millions of dollars for him. There have been a decent number of times where he’s been less effective due to injury issues, but really just one or two where he’s been ineffective or worse than average.

The A's colors are green and gold.

I...

fucking hate you (and I mean that in the most affectionate way)

Tom Hume. Holy hell.

I'm here to talk about the past.

the feeling is entirely reciprocal :)

For a bad stretch of my childhood, I was stuck in SW Ohio … the Oester/Driessen years …

Just awful

I’d almost rather have a clown sneak in my room and touch me inappropriately than have to endure that.

I said “almost”. Gosh.

I'm here to talk about the past.

Slight update

Seems Harden is feeling better (as well as Big Z), so he will make his next start:

Harden, 4-1 with a 1.50 ERA since joining the Cubs on July 8 in a six-player deal with Oakland, is set to rejoin the rotation on Thursday. He missed one start with discomfort in his arm. Zambrano was scheduled to go Saturday after missing one turn. Harden threw a side session on Monday and Zambrano threw Tuesday.

However, old Gaudin is now hurt:

The pitching staff also has been hurt by reliever Chad Gaudin’s back injury. Gaudin, 4-1 with a 4.63 ERA, is in Arizona working out after seeing a team physician in Chicago on Monday who diagnosed nothing serious wrong.

Gotta love how Candid Pinella is too (roflmao) re: Gaudin :

“He said he gets a tingling down in his buttocks when he throws the ball,” Piniella said. “His absence has hurt us in the middle.”

"Twenty minutes," says Jack Sr. "Thank god for Billy Beane."

"any fan that wants us to do that is going to be disappointed because that just isn’t us."
