A Lesson in Sliding (starring Emil Brown)
It wasn't a terribly fun game at the ballpark today and I had a little timing to prove it. I picked up a ticket from StubHub a couple nights ago for less than face even with the fees thrown in so I could go see my last game of the season and also check out Josh Outman. The stuff looks like it's there but he needs consistency. No surprise at this point. Too many high pitch counts doomed him today. It also doesn't look like those CoolBase uniforms have the velcro patch the regular ones do. Oops. Let's get Uni Watch on it (though they've already done a very detailed look at buttons and lettering on uniforms over the years).
Of course, we had one of the worst slides ever by Emil Brown. I don't know if he was trying to avoid contact or if something else was going through his mind, but he picked the worst thing he could've done in that spot when he slid as short as he did. If nothing else, he could've at least got into a rundown so the guys on first and second might've had a chance to move up a base, but instead we got this:
What's missing there? That's right, the plate. Napoli's probably thinking, "Here we go. Better get ready for the collision. Wait? He's sliding? From there? Uh, okay. *tag* Thanks."
That 'bases loaded, nobody out, end up with no runs' sequence basically killed an already dead crowd. It was the equivalent of taking a zombie, shooting it a dozen times, hacking at it with a machete, dousing it in gasoline and setting it on fire, then finally cutting its head off.
Gary Matthews Jr. almost came up with this one. He slid closer to the plate than Brown did! Naturally, I didn't quite get the one he did catch down the line.
We did get to see Jeff Baisley's first hit in the bigs:
There will be a few more shots once I make a gallery and go through the rest, but I wandered away from my seat and picked up a mousepad with the old Coliseum on it right in the middle of Foulke's choulkejob. I didn't miss missing the back-to-back-to-backs.
By the time I got done chatting with Icebox (aka Robert, who's doing a roller derby thing in Pleasanton the Saturday before Thanksgiving - shameless plug) I just didn't feel like watching any more baseball on this day. I timed my BART train just right and got back to my car as the A's were just starting to score. It would've served me right if they came back all the way to win but it didn't happen.
Hey, at least the weather was nice!

only problem with the zombie analogy...
is that it implies the A’s offense is dangerous.

Yeah, but I was applying it more to the crowd.

There's no excuse for a slide like that. None.
My t-ball team last year tried harder than E-Fail.

With that type of intensity...
Emil should be playing everyday, right?

Great pics
I hope E-Fail never gets on the field the last nine games after that pathetic give-up slide. I would have gotten a shot of that except I was too busy throwing up.

Nice pics
I can see where the Velcro helps with the gapping, but I found it annoying on the authentic jersey I bought last year and took it off. I don’t like having scratchy things sewed to my clothes.
Don't blame me, I voted for Bill King.

nice baisley picture
that’s a perfect swing there…firm front side, eyes behind barrel…good work.

Thanks
I could probably take a little from that, myself. Lately I’ve been opening up my swing way too early in our softball games.

Can we just shoot him after the game
and bury him by the foul line?

After? You mean he might get into another game?
by mikev on Sep 19, 2008 1:19 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
we damn well better bury him *outside* the foul line
Otherwise, he’ll be in every game until the team moves.

When you slide and your hand drags across the grass in front of the plate area, that's not a good thing.

Just in case anyone's wondering...
…I decided to take down the shirt post until I find out more about what I might be able to do. To those who expressed interest, thanks. Maybe something can be worked out.
