Why is Emil Brown complaining....he has not been dfa'd
So Emil Brown with is 1.4 million dollar contract is upset that he has not got the chance he deserved to play more this year? This guy is lucky he was not dfa'd this year. He has no future with the A's and will be lucky to get a contract offer beyond the major league "minimum" next year. A minor league deal/offer, but nothing else. The guy is a poor fielder, poor baserunning, and on his best day an average hitter.
If Bill Bavasi was still GM of the Mariners, why he would be dumb enough to sign Brown, but no one else will. The A's have a large group of outfielders to try out for next year, and no way is Brown among them. I would sit his ass on the bench for the rest of this year, and let someone else get his time in the field and any plate appearances. Even one at bat is taking it away from someone else who needs it to assist the A's in their 2009 evaluations.

Did he actaully say anything new?
Or this just in response to his comments like a week ago?

from SF gate
Slusser: Emil Brown got a rare start against lefty Saunders. His playing time has dipped to next to nothing with the influx of young outfielders. The 10-year veteran has started fewer than half of the team’s past 92 games after starting 54 of the first 60. He might be closing in on 100 RBIs had his playing time remained static.
“It hasn’t finished the way it started,” Brown said. “They can see I’m not happy with how the situation has gone for me, but I’m trying to be realistic. I’m sure they can find someone else to do what I’ve done this year under these circumstances, good luck with that. I’ve been healthy all year, I’ve never had a problem running or hitting, and I’m not playing. I’m tired of being that guy.”

didn't like the signing in the offseason
but Emil has grown on me this year. He’s still not anything special and would occasionally make bone head plays for a veteran but at least he produced when given the opportunity to play. He had one slump that caused him to be benched and outside of that he’s hit when others haven’t. His .244 avg is higher than Barton, Cust, Ellis, Hannahan, and Crosby. He would have had some decent numbers if had been a reg in the lineup. His benching cost him $$. If I were him, I would have asked to be released.

That's not an endorsement of Brown
It’s just an acknowledgement that most of our hitters suck.

If anything, Brown was probably on a pace for around 80 RBI depending on any...
…hot or cold streaks.
Then again, he might not have even reached that many. He had 56% of his RBI for the year by May 11, 33 in his first 145 AB (1 every 4.4 AB). Since then, 26 in 257 AB (1 every 9.9 AB).

still
he would have ended up with more RBI than J.Cust. Did Cust break 70 yet? A power hitter that doesn’t drive in any runs. What a damn shame.

As much as I don't like Emil Brown
I think it’s bullshit that people are ripping the guy for wanting to be on the field. Dumbass fans need to pick a lane: Do you hate the players who just sign the contract and rest on their laurels, or do you hate the players who want to be on the field? If you hate both then stop watching sports.
Yeah, Emil Brown is bad at baseball. But that doesn’t mean he shouldn’t want to be out there giving his all and helping the team win. Maybe he should be more understanding of the situation the A’s are in, but I never understood how anybody could be mad at an athlete for wanting to be on the field more. That’s completely illogical.

Why should fans accept the false, and limited choices you present?
Yeah, Emil Brown is bad at baseball. But that doesn’t mean he shouldn’t want to be out there giving his all and helping the team win.
And if the manager concludes that no, Emil Brown, even when giving his all cannot help the team win, he should STFU.
It might be completely “illogical: for someone to be mad an athlete for wanting to be on the field more. It is also completely "illogical” for a crappy athlete to complain about not getting to play.
Take the Olympics as an example. Even crappy athletes want to compete there. They can’t. If they also go around complaining that it is unfair that their crappiness prevents them from going to the Olympics, would it be “illogical” for fans to make fun of them?
If a crappy player in the minors complains about not / never being called up to the majors, would it be “illogical” for fans to make fun of him?

Wow, just, wow.
First of all, Brown being bad at baseball is pretty irrelevant for the point I was making. He wants to go out and help the team win, and fans should respect that. I’m not saying he should get his way. He shouldn’t. He’s bad and for a bunch of reasons other guys deserve to play right now. But I don’t fault the guy for being unhappy he’s not getting more time.
You clearly don’t understand the mentality of the athlete, and that’s fine. But nobody gets to the major leagues witht he attitude that it’s ok to let others play. It takes a lot for an aging veteran to accept a lesser role because that’s just not in the nature of somebody who performs at such a high level, and as bad as Brown is, he’s still among the elite 1%.
Your last two examples are completely misguided. In both cases you’re talking about somebody you was not even good enough to get a shot, and, also, multi-million dollar contracts aren’t involved. Your examples are no different than me saying “I’m pissed off that Billy Beane didn’t let me play some outfield this year.” Obviously that’s ridiculous. You really can’t see the difference between those examples and the situation with Emil Brown?

OK, I don't understand a mentality of an athlete, but you do?
Why should fans accept that a crappy player wants a job that he can’t do?

Oh? A formerly good weightlifter / runner / gymnast, good enough to get to the Olympics, who with age now is crappy, then has a right to complain if s/he is not selected / can’t qualify?

i wish i was that crappy, being on a 25-man roster…
what’s so wrong about him wanting to play?

sometimes you just get frustrated...
i mean, he probably knows this could very well be his last chance to get at-bats in the majors. i wouldn’t be surprised if he feels like the media is the only people who will listen, because obviously the team isn’t (and rightfully so). but looking at it from emil’s perspective, he is frustrated, and as a 34-year-old corner outfielder whose OPS is probably still under .700 (haven’t looked), he knows the end is near. although you are right and the media probably isn’t a good place to go to with your problems, i can sympathize that he is, in the end, still playing a kids’ game at the highest level at age 33 (34 in december), and wants to continue to do so. the fact that he obviously knows that this is probably going to be taken away from him for good after the season is making him pull out all the stops and calling for desperate means, which obviously, in this case, doesn’t mean that anything will change. just my 2 cents (and probably more) on emil, and here’s to the angels picking him up and making him the starter in right next year. ;)

who complains to the media. This enhances his appeal to other teams?

It's about belief
It may or may not be “illogical” for a crappy athlete to complain about not getting to play. But, it’s most likely that Emil believes that he is a good ball player and that he can help the team, even if he is wrong in this belief.
by rallenrader on Sep 19, 2008 9:15 AM PDT 0 recs
Correct
And isn’t that desire to help a team win and to do whatever it takes what fans clamor for? That’s all I’m saying. I don’t want Brown to get another at bat with the A’s, but it would bother me a lot if he simply didn’t care if that was the case.
People here rip Manny for being lazy, but rip Brown for wanting to play. Doesn’t make any damn sense.

Maybe that's not a reason to be angry with Emil
It’s certainly a reason to feel sorry for him. Even by athletes’ rather low standards, his egotism has long since reached the point of being delusional.

Why should Emil believe he is a good player?
You don’t have to look at SABR stats to come to the conclusion that he’s crap. His batting average 244. His CAREER batting average is 258. His career HIGH in batting average is 287. His career HIGH in RBI is 86. He was non tendered by the ROYALS after 2007.

While Brown has been bad...
He still hit 13 home runs and drove in nearly 60 runs. As much as most of us want him to be out of baseball next year, some one will look at those stats and figure that he will be able to help their team (rightly or wrongly). I still figure he will get a contract somewhere in the range of 1-3 mil for the year. I guess we’ll see.
by jasonlbe on Sep 19, 2008 10:44 AM PDT 0 recs
and that's why he's ticked that he's not playing
The more numbers he puts up this year, the better money he gets next year. Given the tone and content of the comments, I’m not feeling that he’s wildly concerned about how the team does at this point. Besides he’s not completely delusional, he knows the team isn’t going to suddenly start winning if/because he takes the field. There’s probably no more valuable stat, in a contract sense, than RBIs, which are a pure counting stat. Literally the more he’s on the field the more money he’s making in 2009.

I would rather watch Emil Brown play than Jack
worthless Hannahan.
That should tell you what I think of Hannahan.
Hannahan should not and better not be on our roster next year.
There are quite a few others who should be added to this list but I will be happy with just him being excluded.
Having said that, Bobby Crosby is not far behind.
Then there are the pitchers and on of them threw BP yesterday
I hate unproductive outs and the A's are producing them at record production

you must have missed his slide into home... (well the dirt around home)

I think Hannahan reached
130K’s last night, clearly a drain on the offense. I don’t like Cust either but at least he will probably hit 30 HR’s, and has 100 walks. Hannahan’s defense was a pleasant surprise but for a guy who has little power, and very little plate discipline to K 130 times is just not acceptable.
