Open Thread: Game 152 - A's vs. Angels

Los Angeles Angels at Oakland Athletics, Sep 18, 2008 12:35 PM PDT

After last night's awesome, very satisfying come-back win (well, all except the part where our Ziggy got hit by Teixeira; who is no longer a favorite of mine), the A's look to sweep (yes, I said SWEEP!) the Angels, and take the season series, if you can believe it.

Shoddy defense by the Angels helped ice the game in bottom of the ninth last night for the A's, and while I understand being done with the season, I was still shocked at the poor play shown from a team headed to the playoffs, especially from Anderson. I hope it continues.

Josh Outman will get another start this afternoon, following his very nice starting debut against Texas last week, where he went five innings and got the win. The A's will be facing Joe Saunders, one of the few pitchers that they were able to hit in the terrible month of August.

September is a whole new month for the green and gold, as the A's have won seven out of ten games, and look for their fifth straight in today's contest. They certainly have been more fun to watch, and there are promising signs for next season and beyond.

W-LERAWHIPKBB
2008 - Josh Outman 1-0 3.86 1.32 6 2

W-LERAWHIPKBB
2008 - Joe Saunders 15-7 3.65 1.24 90 50

Ahhh!

No Ryan, no Travis, no Dale?! Oh well, it’s not on TV anyway. They can all be BFFs on the bench today.

Good lord.

World class lineup right there. Chance to sweep the Angels and we’re putting our C lineup out there.

Maybe

they got pissed off with my fanpost accusing them of hiding an injury, so they’re going to have Harden throw his arm out in a totally meaningless game.

by VORP is too nerdy on Sep 18, 2008 12:51 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

It was a weird one

As for the walks – word is, he was nibbling (not being wild) and the umps were squeezing him. Gameday showed that to generally be the case. He was hitting 94/95/96 at times, which is a little reassuring, and didn’t sit in the 80’s as much as he did in his last outing. It seems like he’s gone back to throwing his slider a good amount, though, and that’s worrying as I thought he said he’d scrapped that pitch awhile ago because it puts too much strain on his arm.

Leaving him in for 115 pitches was retarded. I wanted to go see him pitch @ NYM next week but chances are his arm is no longer attached to his body.

I apologize.

But people are too touchy now a days. Either way I apologize.

Thanks!

You didn’t offend me — hell, I come from the family that uses clusterfuck as a noun and a verb — but AN aspires to be an inclusive community where everyone* feels welcome, and comments like that don’t help.

I can't help but disagree with that.

But, then, I also can’t help but disagree with the complete and total pussification of America that’s been happening for the last 20 years or so :(

by mikev on Sep 18, 2008 2:55 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

thats offensive... haha

maybe its due to this crappy line-up we trotted out there.

Foulke should just save the coach's arms

and just throw batting practice from now on

LOL

His career is over.

I hate unproductive outs and the A's are producing them at record production

No K-Rod

We had our fun last night.

Vince: "The one day game in the American League

saw the Royals pound Kansas City…" Yes, the Royals are so bad they can beat themselves. (Although I think they have won several in a row… so they’re not as bad as the team they actually pounded, which would be the M’s.)

Speaking of unicorn...

I’m sad he’s going to miss the 40th anniversary team celebration. Stupid surgery.

Timing couldn't be worse...

…Season-ending
…FA walk year
…and now the anniversary celebration.

Poor MaEl.

So we've had baserunner(s) in every inning so far except the 2nd

is that right?

It don’t mean a thing, if we ain’t got that swing… LOB, LOB, LOB, LOB, LOB

Bases loaded, no one out!

Let’s try this again.

Oooh! Carlos! No pressure, man.

by whiteshoes40 on Sep 18, 2008 3:16 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Hey! Bases loaded no outs!

Maybe we won’t get shut out! Go Rivercats!

by A'sfansince1970 on Sep 18, 2008 3:17 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

K-Rod!

Oh god, this could be good.

by danmerqury on Sep 18, 2008 3:21 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

With all these pinch-hitters,

I’d like to see the defense, should we (very improbably) go to extras.

by whiteshoes40 on Sep 18, 2008 3:23 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

What a joke

That save rule need to be changed.

The potential to get a save with a 5 run lead.

Cust needs to line one right at him at 2,000 mph

I hate unproductive outs and the A's are producing them at record production

by Trainman on Sep 18, 2008 3:23 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

This is a tougher spot imo

Than bases empty, 3 run lead

Bring back Hammer.

by OaktownPower on Sep 18, 2008 3:24 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes, there is

If the tying run is on deck it’s a save situation. Terrible, flawed rule.

Fielders choice....

6-3…..

Bring back Hammer.

Come on A's

You can still have an impact on K-Rod’s next contract!

I can’t handle this.

GO RY RY!

Our A's...

They do like to toy with us, don’t they?

Man.

That was one epic ninth-inning tease.

by whiteshoes40 on Sep 18, 2008 3:32 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

That was the epitome of a cheap save

Giving up three runs? Yeah, he’s the greatest of all time. Blechhh

by PortlandPachyderm on Sep 18, 2008 3:39 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

To be fair,

Two runs were charged to Bulger and Arredondo a piece. K-Rod had 0 ER.

by danmerqury on Sep 18, 2008 3:47 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Damn. #59

Bring back Hammer.

by OaktownPower on Sep 18, 2008 3:32 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

did they ever say what happened to Patterson?

What happened to K-Rod’s over the top celebration?!?!

by buddahead9 on Sep 18, 2008 3:32 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Shut Foulke down already!

Bring up another reliever. 3 homeruns! Man! Retire already! That was fun. Bummer Ryan didn’t hit one out, but oh well. At least we get the M’s tomorrow! 2 out of 3 against the Slenga’s is good, especially beating Lackey and KFraud. I’ll take it.

by A'sfansince1970 on Sep 18, 2008 3:35 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Should've used the axe.

But he came back. And there was much rejoicing.

by Jennifer on Sep 18, 2008 3:36 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

He's saving that for a televised game.

He knows Ken just wouldn’t be able to do it justice.

by whiteshoes40 on Sep 18, 2008 3:41 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

The game was on television for me.

But I’d like to hear Ken try.

But he came back. And there was much rejoicing.

I'd like to imagine Killer

standing on a heap of LAA bodies Captain Morgan style.

But he came back. And there was much rejoicing.

by Jennifer on Sep 18, 2008 3:51 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Absolutely.

Except Captain Morgan is wearing way too many clothes.

…did I just type that out loud? Oops.

by whiteshoes40 on Sep 18, 2008 4:09 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Huh?

The Angels have already clinched. Why trot your closer out there two nights in a row?

by danmerqury on Sep 18, 2008 7:31 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

The same reason why john lackey started the other night.

You can’t just simply shut it down once you clinch a playoff birth because that would be just stupid. My point is that when people say that K-Rod has been overworked they are completely wrong, the fact of the matter is that the Angels just happen to win a ton of close games.
