DLD 9/18/08 - Boot-off Edition

In case you missed it, the A's beat the slegnA last night courtesy of K-Fraud's fastball to the bullpen heater. Let's call this one the Boot-off. Video can be seen here - select the video tab and click on 'Oakland walks off on an error'.

The A's go for the sweep today.

Today is Mrs doctorK's birthday. I'm celebrating by taking the day off and going to today's game.

Don't forget to stuff the ballot box for Bill.

OK folks, dump away.

Happy B'day to the Mrs., doctorK

Wish I could be there for the sweep.

Looking back, I realize that my life has been a series of incidents where one person has said to another, "Get this asshole outta here!"

PS - What happened to Hannahan's right eye?

But he came back. And there was much rejoicing.

HannahMontanahan's right eye...

The previous night he was walking through the parking lot after the game when he saw a school bus full of nuns and orphans being attacked by a gang of ninja sharks. Like a bolt of lightning, and without a thought for his own safety, he jumped into the fray and single hanahandedly fought off the whole gang, estimated to be between 70 and 500. Unfortunately he suffered a black eye in the skirmish. Either that, or he poked himself in the eye with a straw while drinking his hot chocolate.

Happy birthday, sal and Frau DoctorK!

I had to watch the video again. 29 second of bliss — it’s perfect the way it starts with the plastic horns playing “Let’s Go Oakland” and ends with the first few bars of “Celebration”.

Don't blame me, I voted for Bill King.

I'm thinking about putting together a DVD

with all the big endings on it to get me through the winter. We could probably get a good 5-10 minutes out of the walk off bunt, the sulk off, this, Interference, the face tag, Ellis hitting the walk off on Posednik’s head, and the other dozen or so great ones I am sure I am forgeting.

This one will already have a place on my desktop next to the sulk off. I watch the sulk off whenever I have a truly bad day at work and need a reminder of how quickly things can change and how great winning is.

I just watched the walk-off highlight three more times.

Just beautiful. I love how Ryan is one of the first ones into the celebration and practically jumps on Dale’s back. Haha.

And I watched mlb.com’s game recap—the Angels’ defense was atrocious, and they didn’t even show the bad throw on Dale’s hit in the 9th. But I didn’t see Crosby’s great play—anybody found a clip of that?

It was 20 years ago today

that this happened.

I was there in the bleachers with my four nieces (I know, what a nice uncle), see pic (taken one year later).

Steph (the youngest) celebrates a b’day tomorrow and her sister Natalie does the same on the 28th. Christina (the oldest) cuts her cake next Monday and is due with her second child on her sister Kimberly’s birthday (10/4). Kimberly is due with her first baby in December.

Where does the time go?

I heart our outfield.
Travis Buck, recalled one day earlier, was back in his old leadoff spot and had two hits, and he was followed in the order by two other hotshot young outfielders. Rookie Aaron Cunningham hit two doubles and drove in Oakland’s only run against Jered Weaver, and Ryan Sweeney continued his on-base onslaught. Sweeney walked three times and has reached base in 12 of his past 14 plate appearances.

Forgot to mention this in the game thread

but it’s good to see Sweeney drawing a few more walks lately.

Rich pitching against the Brewers...

he gave up a run on 3 walks in the first inning, 38 pitches. Now pitching to Kendall in the 2nd… how nice when old friends reunite.

Thank you for the birthday wishes.

I am going to watch the A’s during lecture today. But don’t tell anybody, ok?

Children, until we have taught them better, will be perfectly happy with a seasonal round of games in which conkers succeeds hopscotch.

Thanks for the headsup

i’m heading in to lecture in 15 minutes and i’m going to watch that “i’m using my laptop to take notes” crowd with a suspicious eye. Do those little twerps think they get to watch when i have to stand up there and run down the history of the mauryan empire?

That’s a good thing; you don’t want him to be injured, but there is no possible benefit to making Duke throw any more innings this year.

by MrIncognito on Sep 18, 2008 2:27 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

How much is Eric Bedard worth now?

Following this discussion at USSM… how much would Bedard be worth? It seems likely that he will be DFA’d by the M’s at the end of the season. I could see a 2 yr/$4 mil contract with heavy incentives paying big dividends. Bedard probably won’t be back until 2010, but given what a good draft pick is going for, it looks like a risk worth taking.

by MrIncognito on Sep 18, 2008 2:25 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Bedard can do much better than that contract

He MIGHT take a 1 year $7 deal, but in no way in hell will he take 2 years, 4 million.

He will make SURE that he signs for 1 year so he can sign a long term contract after the year. And if Mark Mulder can get $7 million after repeated arm surgeries, So can Bedard after 1.

facepalm.jpg

by Zonis on Sep 18, 2008 4:31 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Eh?

Mulder had a much less extensive injury record than Bedard has. Bedard has had hip problems, back problems, oblique injuries, and Tommy John surgery. And the Mulder contract was a clusterf*** of epic proportions… I doubt many teams are exactly eager to repeat it.

Bartolo Colon got less than $1.5 million this season.

Your 2008 Athletics: It's Nothing Personal.

by PaulThomas on Sep 18, 2008 4:53 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Thank you

Washburn is making $11 million next year. That doesn’t mean another pitcher like him can expect that deal.

If Bedard wants a paycheck next season, he’s going to have to find a team willing to take a pretty big risk.

by MrIncognito on Sep 18, 2008 5:44 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I believe the Cubs signed Ryan Dempster when he was hurt

With the thinking that the first year was a lost year, but the second year of the deal would be where he’d be useful. A few years later, he’s one of the better starters in the league.

I could see him getting a couple years, but not at much money.
