Open Thread: Game 151 - A's vs. Angels

Los Angeles Angels at Oakland Athletics, Sep 17, 2008 7:05 PM PDT

If you heard me tell you that at the end of the season, the A's Greg Smith would have his name among the pitching leaders, with Daisuke Matsuzaka and A.J. Burnett, you probably would be elated, until you learned it's in the walks column. Smith, who comes into tonight's game with a 7-15 record (compared to Dice-K's 17-2 and Burnett's 18-10) is tied for third in the league in offering up free passes, with 82, and has 11 straight starts with 2 or more walks. It's a big part of his inconsistency, which has seen him alternate giving up 8 runs with 7 innings of scoreless ball, followed by 6 runs in his last outing. You're never really sure which Greg Smith is going to show up, and in his last 11 decisions, since June 30th, Smith has come out the loser 9 times.

W-L ERA WHIP K BB
2008 - Greg Smith 7-15 4.23 1.37 103 82

The streaky Smith will be opposed by the Angels' Jered Weaver, who has had a remarkably pedestrian 11-10 record and 4.25 ERA for the division champions. He has won once in his last five starts, and lost his last contest to the A's on August 25th by a score of 2-1. With the A's riding their first three-game win streak since mid-June, we'll have to see if the same kind of luck will return for the A's to make it four in a row.

W-L ERA WHIP K BB
2008 - Jered Weaver 11-10 4.25 1.27 136 51

On the offensive side of things, it's clear the A's wish they could trot out nine outfielders from top to bottom. Buck, Cunningham and Sweeney will lead the game off. Brown and the recently called up Gonzalez and Denorfia will be commiserating on the pine. Go A's!

Greg is also among the league leaders in pickoffs!

That should count for something.

It's because he has so many opportunities! :-)

Yes, he’s #1 in all of the land in that category. I love the pickoff move.

Why was it so obvious that the curveball was coming?

I actually was expecting another changeup because he just threw that on 3-1. A breaking ball out of the zone with bases loaded is not a given, especially with a guy having some control issues.

by thejd44 on Sep 17, 2008 8:40 PM PDT up reply actions

I can't blame Cust that particular AB

Perfect 3-1 changeup and then a curve that looked like a strike 2/3 of the way to the plate. Just two perfect pitches.

I still can't believe he threw the 3-1 change

That’s pretty ballsy in that situation.

And shouldn’t everybody here be happy he swung at a “close” third strike? Sure, it was a ball 99% of the time, but the umpire MIGHT have called in a strike so he should’ve swung!

by thejd44 on Sep 17, 2008 8:44 PM PDT up reply actions

Off speed

It was not going to be a fastball.

We have Cust on the team for better or worse but I could think of at least 200 ML hitters I would have up there with runner on 3rd and less than two outs before him.

Yes, he bangs out the homers and walks. I am only talking about the runner on 3rd situation. I don’t know the stat on Cust but I can bet it is horrible.
