2009 schedule: we'll find out early what this team is made of

MLB posted the tentative 2009 schedule - the A's will be hoping to repeat last night's feat of beating John Lackey and the Angels, not in Oakland, but in Anaheim.  The A's open in Anaheim and close with the Angels in Oakland.  April will be brutal if the team is trying to find itself:

  • 4 at Anaheim
  • 3 Seattle, 3 Boston
  • 3 at Toronto, 3 at Yankees
  • 3 Tampa Bay
  • 3 at Texas

That said, we have a wonderful interleague schedule as the A's draw the NL West.  Unfortunately, the rest of the AL West draws the NL West (though the Rangers get Houston as their rival game).

  • 3 vs Arizona
  • 3 at SF, 3 at LA, 3 at SD
  • 3 vs Colorado, 3 vs SF

July is also a brutal month:

  • 1 vs Detroit
  • 3 at Cleveland, 3 at Boston, 3 at TB
  • 4 vs Angels, 3 vs. Twins
  • 3 at Yankees, 4 at Boston

If the A's can survive April that will be a positive sign and should set them up to thrive against the NL.  If we're still in a contending position through July, Beane would have good reason to make trades to improve the club.

There are a lot of question marks for the 2009 team - we should quickly get answers in April!

I'll be in SD for school

But unfortunately that SoCal roadtrip is right when finals end. I’ll be down there when the A’s are at SF, and I’ll be up here when they’re down in SD.

Later start (and finish) than in recent years

For those planning spring training trips, the first exhibition game figures to be on Thursday, March 5, based on recent scheduling patterns. This year, the first game was on February 28. The spring training schedule usually isn’t posted until close to Thanksgiving.

Isn't the WBC next year?

That’s probably the reason for the late start.

Korach said February 28 in Maryvale

at least that is what I thought I heard. I also heard that ST would last longer next year. Too bad WBC isn’t in Phoenix. That was fun.

Not a good schedule from an attendance perspective

NYY, Boston and San Francisco are all weekday games. We only get NYY and Boston once.

Oh well, next year was going to be a down year for attendance anyhow. It will also probably still be a rebuilding year. Might as well get this type of schedule (from an attendance perspective) out of the way while rebuilding.

And more seats available for two bucks on Wednesdays…

Give them some credit for trying to make it cheaper.

Changes made to Dollar Wednesdays

According to that article, EVERY Wednesday will be a dollar Wednesday. This will include games against the Red Sox, Yankees and Giants (we play them in a mid week series this year).

Also, the Dollar Wednesday sections will be expanded to include the Plaza Infield sections.

Field Level Outfield tickets will be going down from $30 to $26.

I guess the A’s are at least trying.

Hmm, press release says

“Colorado’s Rockies-who were crowned National League champions in 2007-visit Oakland for three weekday matchups June 26-28.”

But that’s still Fri-Sun for that series.

we also get

The 2001 ML champs, the 2002 NL champs, the 1998 NL champs, and the 1988 ML champs. We’s stacked in 2009, baby!

They prob figure that

enough fans of both teams will fill the stadium for the A’s-Giants, no matter if it’s a weekday or weekend, while your more casual fans are apt to go to weekend games.

And of course that is just a 6am theory; I don’t really have any proof.

I'm here to talk about the past.

Petco Park

I had a great time watching Zito try to bat last time the A’s were in town – When do tickets usually go on sale? I’d like to get good seats for the San Diego games.

Those games were SO MUCH FUN lol. I especially liked the day game that turned into an evening game complete with the 14th inning stretch and an A’s win due to a walk with the bases loaded.

by drmmerchk on Sep 17, 2008 6:11 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, I had to leave that one in the 10th inning...

…because it was about 4 PM and I had to get home at a reasonable hour for work the next day. As it was, traffic was crazy getting out of San Diego and I ran into more through Los Angeles, as expected, and I didn’t get home until around midnight.

.619 winning percentage

Just read this and it floored me. The A’s have a .619 winning percentage when scoring more than 1 run in a game. Not more than two runs, but just scoring 2 runs a game we are 70-43.

This floors me for two reasons.

#1. I knew our offense was bad, but we have played 37 games (27 1-run and 10 shutout), or just about 1/4 where we have only scored 1 run or less. (’07 that was 22 games, 06 about 17 games).
#2. If we could just get one more run a game theoretically or ceteris parabis that would be 16 more wins from 1-run games.

I know this is all theoretical, but my point is, one more run doesn’t seem like a whole lot to improve on for next year (unless you’re scoring 1 or fewer in 25% of your games).

Wow

I wonder how that stacks up with the rest of the league? Probably Top-5.

Isn't Interleague play planned?

I was under the impression that they rotated the divisions in a 3 year cycle.

IE: in 2005, the NL Central played the AL East, in 2006 the NL Central played the AL Central., and in 2007 the NL Central played the AL West.

So, since the A’s just played the NL Central last year, and the NL East this year, wouldn’t the NL West make sense? Someone want to clear this up for me?
