Open Thread: Game 150 - A's vs. Angels
While his teammates of yesteryearday battle for the AAA championship (leading 4-0 in the bottom of the 6th as of this posting), Travis Buck returns to Oakland and he is in tonight's starting lineup. If the goal is to build Buck's confidence back these last two weeks of the season, the A's could have given Travis an easier transition than to face John Lackey. Then again, perhaps it an "If I can make it there, I can make it anywhere" scenario - if Buck has a solid game against Lackey tonight, it's all coasting from there.
Sean Gallagher, fresh off a bizarre four inning, 88 pitch, 44 ball, no hit performance in Detroit, makes his second start since resting a tired shoulder. Strikes, Sean. Strikes.
Tonight's starting lineups:
Aybar - SS
Figgins - 3B
Anderson - DH
Teixeira - 1B
Hunter - CF
Morales - RF
Napoli - C
S. Rodriguez - 2B
Willits - LF
Pennington - 2B
Cunningham - LF
R. Sweeney - CF
Cust - DH
Suzuki - C
Buck - RF
Crosby - SS
Barton - 1B
Hannahan - 3B

I guess the Baisley experiment is over
after a handful of AB’s.
Why else is that * Hannahan still in the lineup wasting space. All I can say, if he’s on the team in any capacity next year, there may be a sniper in the parking lot of Game 1 to fix it.
Go A’s and let’s deal it to that fugly on the mound
I hate unproductive outs and the A's are producing them at record production
What happened to Crosby not getting playing time anymore
And why the hell is Miley still playing everyday? I’d let Baisley go 0-50 before Hannahan started another game. There’s no good reason to keep playing a guy who has proven he’s not good enough when there are other players who have earned an opportunity.

I was waiting by the A's dugout a couple weeks ago
before a game, where Ziggy was signing stuff. One of the kids asked him, “Hey, where’s Buck?” Ziggy just replied with, “He’s in Sacramento. He’ll be back very soon.”
All I could do was sigh and smile, really.
eek
that was a 24 pitch 1-2-3…4 inning.

Steverson's moment on national television
is destroyed by the Gatorade shower.
Given DeFrancesco’s midseason demotion…I don’t think I’ve ever heard of a coach who was demoted during the season coming back to the organization the following year…perhaps Steverson will get an opportunity on the big league coaching staff next year.
Gallagher has really recovered from all those pitches in the first

For some reason I really hate everything about Travis Buck's baseball abilities.

Even in the field he leaves much to be desired. His arm is weak and I think he takes poor routes on fly balls.

LOL ( I knew that was coning)
The guy still sucks.
Of course I’ll take the home run. Lackey served it up to him.
Hannahan is still the worst player on the A’s by a mile. Crosby is close behind.
Every day that Hannahan plays ahead of any other prospect makes management look foolish but that’s just my opinion.
He could hit 20 home runs in his next 20 at bats and I would still euthanize him

CarGon might factor in late-2009/2010

I think C-Gon is different than the other two in the sense that he has some real power potential.
He also looks like he will play a solid CF. If he can develope some plate discipline (only 21 yrs old) he could be a very good offensive player.

Just got in
Had a looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong talk with my 15-year old son tonight
I say that as if you care.
Hey, we lead!
I'm here to talk about the past.
I'm not a parent or anything
But something I’ve always believed is that “Education” in the normal sense is not necessarily for everybody. That doesn’t mean I think dropping out of high school is fine or anything, but for some people college just isn’t going to work. I don’t know your son, but if he’s one of those types you should make him aware of all the great, and in many cases important, careers that are out there for non-college graduates. I think even more important than pushing education is pushing him to figure out what he enjoys and what he would like to do with his life.
by thejd44 on Sep 16, 2008 8:38 PM PDT up reply actions
I'm having trouble just getting
him to stay in his high-school classes; he’s been cutting.
I think college is a pipe dream at this point. But then I did not go to college and I turned out fine. Wait, did I?
But thank you. A lot of what I was trying to key on tonight were his interests.
I'm here to talk about the past.
A lot of people with great educations
were hauling their stuff out of Lehman Brothers offices in cardboard boxes yesterday. And those are people who don’t have the slightest idea how they can possibly get by on less than $200K/year.
Isn’t that interesting, that some statistic came out recently showing that a sizable percentage of people making $100,000/yr or more report that they are living paycheck-to-paycheck? ::shudder::
That makes education all the more important.
Maybe not college education (though, my 5 year old and 3 year old already have college funds started for them, because 15 years from now it’s gonna be worthless to even have “just an Associates”)
Poor financial planning and/or financial knowledge can be an absolute killer in life.
His mom and I worked very hard so he didn't have to.
Sometimes I think he knows that.
I'm here to talk about the past.
But the chances of them getting another job
should be pretty good considering their education and former job. Not everyone can pick a winner, but you can make yourself better prepared to bounce back.
To be honest though
a degree only proves you can work hard and/or learn. There are other ways of proving that but a degree might be easier.
I never understood why it was called "Birds and the bees"

that an A’s win tonight would clinch the club’s 10th consecutive non-last-place finish in the AL West (i.e. Seattle would clinch last place).
Since the A’s most recent last-place finish in 1998, that ignominy has gone to:
