Our boys have the day off. We'll need something to do. Enter me, killing time.

I'll put the iTunes crap up top in case you want to skip the photos.

If you want to share any of your Tunes, I copied my songs to Excel, then uploaded them to Google Docs. Please share with the group if you have an easier way. KTHNX.

Mine, and a question

iTunes playlist

Not sure if that works. Also, Jennifer, good taste in comedy (Demetri Martin, Mitch Hedberg) and country!

I’m doing a kinesiology project, and thinking of doing it on pitching mechanics (or even hitting). I know there are a couple people who have posted excellent pitching mechanics fanposts here, so I was hoping to get your (or anyone else’s) opinion.

Who has the best and worst mechanics? Who has the best and worst swing? I’d prefer to get more prominent players (i.e. no backups, middle relievers), so I can find plenty of pictures for my project.

by JLaff on Sep 15, 2008 8:34 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Well, pretty subjective...but.

Best mechanics: Mark Prior (I know, ouch)
Worst Mechanics: BJ Ryan, K Rod, Mitch Williams

Best swing: Ken Griffey, Joe Mauer, Chipper Jones, Albert Pujols
Worst swing: Gape Kapler?

How do you define "best mechanics"

Mark Prior’s mechanics are pretty awful. He’s got a hellacious inverted W.

I’d say Zach Greinke is up there for best mechanics – Driveline Mechanics did an article about him that’s not been ported over to SBNation format yet, but he basically does NOTHING wrong.

Lincecum’s mechanics are pretty awesome too, albeit unorthodox.

Worst Mechanics: K-Rod

by mikev on Sep 15, 2008 10:04 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

ditto on K-Fraud

And any discussion of poor mechanics has to include Vlad. Yes, even if he retired right now he’d be a borderline HOF’er, and what he does works for him, yadda yadda yadda — but kids under the age of 15 shouldn’t be allowed to watch Angels games, for the harm that “learning” from Vlad and K-Fraud can do.

I dunno, I guess if they're ONLY allowed to watch Garret Anderson from like 3 years ago it'd be OK

I mean, I hate the guy cause he’s an Angel, but he’s got an awfully nice swing. Very quiet in the box, still hands, and lets the bat do the work for him without trying to kill the ball.

As long as you only show them individual swings

the pitching thing has been done to death

Do it on hitting, much more unique. To do something really interesting, do it on why left-handed swings and right-handed swings are so necessarily so different (i.e. lefties don’t have to change their natural inclination of falling toward first, whereas righties do) and how it changes the styles.

wow that's amazing

because i saw RHCP at the roaracle a couple years back, and it was unbelievable.

the NFG concert was pretty good. their singer’s voice sounds a little bit whinier, but he joked that he “inhaled helium and had (the guitarist) punch him in the nuts” before the show. he also never lost his voice and stayed strong throughout, which is more than i can say for some other punk bands i’ve seen (fall out boy at warped tour in ’06 was the single worst performance i have ever witnessed). there are some videos of the show on youtube if you search for “new found glory @ catalyst”, the venue i saw them at.

I saw them at an outdoor festival.

and everyone who played pretty much sounded terrible so I think it was probably sound issues or just the venue. I’d love to see them again somewhere else :)

cool, thanks! I’ll search for it on youtube. I’d like to see them someday. they’re on my list.

I can’t even decide what the worst performance I’ve seen was. there have been far too many. I think it was Hole (“I’m realllllly sick tonight you guys” bleh Courtney Love) when they opened for someone I wanted to see, Slipknot (at Ozzfest, I wasn’t there to see them), or when my friend got free tickets to some awful Nickelback concert. those are 3 off the top of my head that were all painfully bad to sit through.

I'd deal Street and Crosby for him...

His contract isn’t nearly the albatross the article makes it out to be. The vesting options give the team an out if he gets injured or is ineffectual.

Magglio

Would have to be the ideal solution this offseason for the Oakland Athletics, especially when you factor in the needs of the would be trading partner. Trading Street as part of this deal is a given. Crosby fits their bill, but he’s just not very good. But if they want a sure fielding shorstop, we can provide Gregorio Petit, who is young/cost controlled and also hit .300. So either of those shortstops, or both, would be fine by me. I think throwing in another prospect would ultimately be necessary: Magglio is one of the best hitters around. Either that or another reliever, because their relievers plain suck.

So I’ll say: Street, Crosby/Petit (or both), Andrew Brown?

the problem is not "too many left handed hitters" but "too many suck handed hitters"-Zonis

by monkeyball on Sep 15, 2008 3:28 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think tossing in an outfielder might make more sense than Brown

I dont know a ton about Detroit’s system, but even if they have a guy to step in for Magglio, they’re creating a hole somewhere. The A’s are deepest in the OF anyway. Street, Crosby, and Buck/Sweeney for Magglio

Would bringing in Magglio for possibly just one season be worth giving up those parts? If somebody could guarantee a good, healthy Magglio then it’s essentially three more years of the guy and it’s certainly worth it. At this point, I’m not 100% sold on taking that risk. I’d consider it though.

by thejd44 on Sep 16, 2008 5:42 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

It's not bad if they're trying to dump his salary

Beggars can’t be choosers… especially since he has a lot of leverage over where they can trade him.

But I wouldn’t be averse to throwing in another outfielder or reliever if they wanted one.

by monkeyball on Sep 15, 2008 12:29 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not that weird

Other than that they’re in contention, the guy is a really, really bad manager. He’s also not exactly the type players enjoy playing for.

I’m not sure he’ll even notice if he’s fired though. I think he’s still trying to get people to acknowledge CC’s attempt at a no hitter.

by thejd44 on Sep 15, 2008 12:34 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

But isn’t this a case where the incompetent functionary was fired not because he was incompetent, or that as a functionary he’s totally fungible, but because … well, grit/heart/gumption/“light a fire under their asses”/accountability/chicken entrails/Flying Spaghetti Monster/motivational seminar at the Ramada by the beltway off-ramp?

cocky whacko @('.')@

by monkeyball on Sep 15, 2008 12:38 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Possibly

But it also could be because, for the second straight year, he’s freaked out during September while his team was collapsing. I can’t say if he’s causing the collapse, but nobody can (really, this is true for pretty much every manager firing).

I’m surprised they fired him before the end of the season, but in a way I admire this move. I’ve never seen something like it before. To Doug Melvin’s credit, if he felt getting swept by Philly was enough to let Yost go, he did it regardless of the calendar month.

by thejd44 on Sep 15, 2008 12:58 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I've seen it happen

A few years ago, the New Jersey Devils GM fired the coach… then stepped in to coach the team himself. This with about 3 weeks left in the season.

Your 2008 Athletics: It's Nothing Personal.

by PaulThomas on Sep 15, 2008 2:46 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

You think?

Most of the heat he has taken has been for decisions and rotation/bullpen usage rather than the team not havea fire under their asses. The way he got less starts out of CC and Sheets than he could have using them just every 5th day could very posssibly be the 2-3 games they end up losing by. And then because CC has an extra day he throws him a ton of pitches in a blowout? Ridiculous.

His use of Shouse against Burrell and then his defense of it was awful.

I think he got fired because he sucks and is making poor decisions.

Bring back Hammer.

by OaktownPower on Sep 15, 2008 12:59 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Me too

I don’t think he was fired to get the team motivated after losing 4 to Philly. I think he was fired because the organization believes he was a major reason for losing 4 to Philly. That is, of course, debateable. But at least it’s a baseball reason, and I support that.

by thejd44 on Sep 15, 2008 1:04 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

but that's ... insane/stupid/reactionary

If he’s been making stupid moves over, by all accounts, his entire tenure as manager, than why not recognize that and fire him earlier? Heck, why not perform due diligence, figure out his philosophies in the interview process, and not hire him in the first place?

Firing him now, for whatever reason, is a reaction of organizational panic — and of the front office not wanting to own its own mistakes, and not being able to fire on-field personnel for underperforming (which would be equally as dumb).

cocky whacko @('.')@

by monkeyball on Sep 15, 2008 1:07 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I see the argument

I actually wonder if there was something else going on. Yost seems to have a bit of John Gibbons in him, so it’s possible there was some sort of blowup behind closed doors.

by thejd44 on Sep 15, 2008 1:14 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Why did Beane fire Macha?

Should Beane have not realised in the interview process all Macha’s weaknesses, and not hired him in the first place?

Expand on that. Should all MLB teams have realised in the interview process all the weaknesses of their potential hires, and not hire them in the first place? In which case no one gets fired?

Or maybe, the Brewers FO are human. They make mistakes. And the manager himself is also human. He has strengths. He has weaknesses. Perhaps the front office hoped that his strengths outweighed his weaknesses. Or they thought that his strengths outweighed his weaknesses. Or maybe, they thought that he could improve on those weaknesses. Or, his strengths were more suitable for the team at the time when he was hired: to nurture and develope young players as opposed to managing a contending team. Perhaps, there are a myriad of other reasons.

But, stick to the process. Anything else is insane / stupid / reactionary.

hey, as thejd44 implied, if something Gibbonsesque went down, I'm all for the firing

And, sure, there could be myriad ways in which the firing makes sense.

But to make that decision, in this moment, strikes me as stupid and panic-induced.

I sure as heck won’t defend any part of the whole inane dance between Beane and Macha, from start to conclusion … to re-start to final conclusion.

Yeah, that grammar article is

brilliant. If you don’t feel like plowing through the whole thing, his #1 recommendation is when in doubt refer to bryan garner’s Dictionary of Modern American Usage, advice that served me well in my long episode of adult onset grad school. I loved Infinite Jest but it took me a whole summer to plow through it. Actually, that was a negative for my grad school interlude – it took the profs about 3 years to break me of using DFW-style footnotes – wish i knew how to throw one here for old times’ sake!

I wish I could remember how long it took me to finish it!

I tried to be very dilligent about reading every single footnote. The main problem was how dang heavy the actual book was—and I had a paperback! I wish it would have been in a two volume set for ease of handling. It was hard to just throw in my handbag to get in a few pages on MUNI.

Top of the 7th in Milwaukee

And Ted Lilly hasn’t allowed a hit. No link, but ESPN is doing live look ins every now and again. I’m sure if he keeps it up for another couple innings they’ll put it on TV.

No team in Major League history has pitched back-to-back no hitters.

Interesting play

Hard hit ground ball to Ramirez, he plays it terribly and it rolls up his arm and to Cedeno (I think) at short. The throw to first was late.

The official scorer gave an error.

It's good you're being challenged

I’m almost done with grad school and I haven’t really been challenged yet. Never really have when it comes to school. All that’s done is allowed me to learn how to get by with a decent-but-not-great grade (from the B to A- range). It’s made me lazy to the point where if I were challenged, I’m not even sure I’d do well.

Aah! I just went in your Flickr photostream and who do I see right away but Ike Davis! (ASU, Mets #1 draft pick this year, Mets are my other team). Cooool! Mets fans love Ike already. Those pics are from a Stanford game, Sean Ratliff must be in there too! (Mets 4th round pick this year). Ratliff is the one who made the biggest impression on me when I went to see Mets Single-A in Brooklyn this year… he dropped a shoulder and nailed the catcher in a play at the plate :)

by schmifty on Sep 15, 2008 9:20 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah!

I can’t imagine there’s anything Ike can’t do on a baseball field. the Mets are really fortunate to have that kid. great player.

I don’t remember seeing Sean Ratliff but I was there for ASU so I didn’t pay TOO much attention to the Stanford players even though they were kicking our butts ;)

I don't think so, but I can't wait!

The Mets just did theirs last night – had about 10 guys dress up as Michael Phelps, in full-body Speedo swimsuits, goggles, swim caps, and gold medals, waving little American flags :D

I’m afraid Swooney may not have to do it this year, seeing as the White Sox made him be a male cheerleader already last year.

The funny part is Ryan actually looks like he could be a male cheerleader.

Especially with all that hair. But I think he would’ve made a good gladiator too…

I hope the A’s make him do it again, though. They’re always good at picking out costumes…
