Open Game Thread - Game 149: A's vs. Rangers
Texas Rangers at Oakland Athletics, Sep 14, 2008 1:05 PM PDT
The A's look to break even in this series with Rangers, sending Dana Eveland to the hill. Eveland is opposed by Vicente Padilla.
It's hard for me to believe we're already halfway through September, with only 14 games remaining including today's. As depressing as the second half has been this season, it's flown right by.
I'm not sure whether Ray Fosse and Mark Ellis addressed this in Ray's pregame interview show, but Ellis is apparently leaning toward having two offseason shoulder surgeries: one to clean up his recent cartilage damage, and another to fix the labrum tear caused by Crosby in 2004.
Also, apprently Buck, Gonzalez, and Denorfia will all be coming back up to the parent club once Sacto's season ends. Many questions remain for the A's here at the tail end of the season -- time to see what the various fellas have to potentially contribute in '09.

I, for one, will be glad to see Buck back.
Hopefully with his 2007 form. I drafted him and Daric Barton for my DMB team, and that’s not looking so good right now.

It will be interesting to see
how they find playing time for all of these outfielders. it’s assumed brown and davis will sit, that leaves cunningham, sweeney, gonzalez, buck, and denorfia to grapple for enough abs. i hope buck gets priority because it would help to see if he can handle some mlb pitching, but cunningham and gonzalez need the time as well.
Buck and Denorfia should get priority.
For one, they’re older. Buck has proven he’s capable of being a good, solid outfielder in the past, and it would be worth it to see if he can regain that form. Denorfia seems like he’s on his last limb. With all of the young outfield talent coming up, he needs to prove himself now. Ditto for Davis. Sweeney, Cunningham, and Gonzalez will have plenty of opportunities in the future.

very true
i think they’ll want to let gonzalez build some condfidence going into the off season. if denorfia struggles initially he’ll lose those abs to the younger guys
CarGon should start at AAA. Davis is utility
Sweeney/Cunningham/Denorfia/Buck do the fighting out for the 3 spots.
I see the future. I see cake.
Jack Cust v. Ryan Howard.
I can’t help but make comparisons. They’re very similar players in that they’re basically HR/BB/K type guys with mediocre/bad defense. Is Ryan Howard really that much better than Jack Cust? He plays in a huge hitter’s park in the weaker league with a much better lineup surrounding him. If Spartacust were in Ryan Howard’s position, could he put up similar numbers?

Add "low BA" to that list, too.
Ryan Howard put up a .313 BA when he won the MVP (Pujols got robbed that year) but that seems to be a fluke season.

Somehow I don't think Pujols feels the same.
Ever see an interview with the guy? He’s super competitive.

Him scoring from second on a infield sacrifice… and injuring two players in one inning (albeit unintentionally…)

Cust walks more than Howard
Howard’s 2008 OBP: .334
Cust: .369
That bandbox known as CBP, the fact that Utley and Burrell surround him, and the leadoff corps in front of him help him a lot.
I still like Ryan Howard and think he is a better overall player than Cust. But, the difference is slimmer than one would expect.
I see the future. I see cake.
Not sure how the hitters behind him affect his performance.
We’ve had debates here whether or not protection is a myth. I haven’t seen the stats showing that it is, but I’m certainly interested in that. Anyone have a link? The hitters infront of him definitely have an effect in terms of his RBI totals.
I don’t know. I actually think Jack Cust may be a better hitter than Ryan Howard. I’d like to see what would happen if we put Jack Cust in the NL in that ballpark and Ryan Howard on the A’s. Also, given the fact that Jack is much cheaper… the A’s are coming out way ahead.
by VORP is too nerdy on Sep 14, 2008 1:46 PM PDT up reply actions
Pitchers will walk Cust more than they will walk Howard
because whoever is hitting behind Cust is MUCH less likely to hit a triple or a HR to score Cust than Pat Burrell.
I see the future. I see cake.
Nope, haven't you heard?
Protection doesn’t exist. Kind of like dinosaurs, actually.

The best I've seen..
is a review of the AL in 1991, which suggested that there isn’t much proof that protection exists.
Do pitchers suggest that protection exists? Just wondering.

Feels like it.
Although surgery = 90+% chance of arbitration accepted, since Ellis is a Type B whom the A’s should offer arbi to. So it probably means Ellis is more likely to stay.

I was up there for work a few weeks ago and finally attended that ballpark. Very nice. Reminded me of Spring Training.

A trip to Oklahoma City! Whee!
That game (Scranton/Wilkes-Barre vs. Sacramento) will be on ESPN2 Tuesday at 5 p.m. Pacific.
It should have occurred to me
that the River Cats are just extending their current stay in Oklahoma City by a couple of days.
Heh…if the Yankees want to go with the pitcher who would have 4 days rest, Kei Igawa would be their starting pitcher.
This might be the saddest game thread ever
Will it die of loneliness? Stay tuned.

It's been awfully quiet lately.
But I was just at Viva El Birdos for the Cardinals/Pirates game, and that thread was even emptier than this one. I guess having their playoff hopes crushed over the last week and getting owned by the Pirates will do that to you.

I'm surprised there's been no discussion about how Dale will help Swooney with his butt injury.
We have truly fallen off.
Okay.. I've never understood why he's called Dale...

I believe it was in one of the A's vs Sox games
An ESPN (?) announcer announced Daric as ‘Dale Barton’. It’s so goofy and fitting, it stuck.
Gary THorne referred to Daric Barton as Dale Barton several times in Japan without correcting himself
or being corrected off air and fixing it

downloading video
I saw where you figured out how to download video using Firefox. Does anyone know how to do it w/o FF. If I send you some links, can you download some videos for me? :-)
39 remarkable innings.
Sure, if you don't find a way to download vid w/o FF, I could do it for you.
Not sure how I would get them to you – could probably put it up on rapidshare or whatnot. I think that would work.
cool, thanks
I was trying to download some on mlb and other sites unsuccessfully. Driving me crazy! Want to test posting with some of the A’s commercials?
39 remarkable innings.
Sure, which commercial you want?
I’m not sure if those might be in a different video format than the mlb.tv highlight clips, so my usual method might not work, but I will give it a shot.
Was able to download the Pink commercial and am putting it on Rapidshare now as a test
but I tried to d/l some 2007 commercials and the format is different so the downloads aren’t working out… but I can try the links you want on a case-by-case basis and see which I can do
Here's the link to download the Pink commercial
you can check if it works for you: http://rapidshare.com/files/145323456/The_A_s_support_breast_cancer_awareness_on_Sept.13th-_Video___MLB.com__Multimedia.flv.html

You guys think Nelson Cruz
gets to be a minor league FA or does TX keep him on the 40 man? Looks like he has figured the whole MLB strike zone out now…
Have the A's ever had three minor league teams
win championships in a year?
One of the stats to watch in the last couple weeks
is whether Crosby will finish with a sub-.300 OBP for the third consecutive season. He was at .303 coming into today’s game.
Let's play a game..
How badly can Bobby Crosby suck?
by VORP is too nerdy on Sep 14, 2008 3:17 PM PDT up reply actions
Interesting to set up a stats comparison
between Crosby and the much-maligned Yuniesky Betancourt. Crosby walks more (43 to Betancourt’s 14) but also strikes out more (89 to 35). Power is very similar but Betancourt’s batting average is higher, resulting in almost identical OPS (Crosby .667, Betancourt .672). Betancourt has made 18 errors to Crosby’s 16.
We know who has the cooler name

AH!!
I took my pain medication right before Swooney got nailed in the ass! Shortly after, I went into happy land and couldn’t comment on the Dale rubbage he’d need.
My ass is hurting in almost the exact same spot as Swoon’s…. I told Poppy maybe Ry and I could rub each other’s asses.
But he came back. And there was much rejoicing.
Now THAT'S the kind of thing we've been missing around here
Thank you, Jennifer. AN is back in business.
Then I said Dale could join.
Poppy responded with: “Baby Sandwich!”
Me: “Jennifer sandwich!”
Poppy: “I thought Baby sandwich would be the smarter way to go since you and Dale are both claustrophobic.”
But he came back. And there was much rejoicing.
And I got up from my coma just in time
to see Baby hit! Wee!
But he came back. And there was much rejoicing.
He clearly hits better with one butt cheek

#1 is both difficult to guess and some awful facial hair.
I have some more photos ready to guess that I’m going to put up tomorrow for the day off.
But he came back. And there was much rejoicing.
Oh good! (about the more guess photos)
That’s funny, I thought #1 was the easiest one. It’s grossing me out the more I look at it.

But he came back. And there was much rejoicing.
