Bud Light's Sobering Off Season suggested moves
First, I would like to say I really enjoy everyone's ideas. We all know the current state of affairs isn't working. While I like the idea of getting a Zimmerman, I am opposed to giving up the farm to get him. Anybody like a Holliday who would also require a bounty isn't worth the short term few extra wins IMO. So all the moves I suggest have a eye on the rebuild that is built towards 2011.Nothing drastic to deplete the farm or change the plans just add a few bats.
So here are the moves and reasons behind them again working within the framework of players "expected" to be part of that future "core".
1. Trade Huston Street & Travis Buck to St. Louis for Ryan Ludwick. Why would St. Louis do this? There best prospect is ready to take an OF job and the bullpen needs help at the back end. Huston is cheaper than signing Fuentes/K-Rod and Buck replaces Ludwick in LF w Rasmus manning CF and Ankiel the RF. This is a lot to give up but it gives the A's a RH hitting OF w power who has 5 years left before FA. Plus it saves the A's roughly 5 million.
2. Trade Vince Mazzaro and Matt Murton to SD for Kevin Kouzmanoff. Why would SD do this? SD clears 3rd base for top prospect while gaining a solid young starter along with OF depth. A's get a middle of the pack 3rd baseman who will be around when they start getting competitive and provides DECENT power from the right side. A good 6th hole type. I like Mazzaro but the pitching and OF depth won't hurt the A's long term.
3. Sign Rafael Furcal to a 3 year 40 million dollar free agent deal. Structured at 10/13/17. Why this helps the A's? They have no "legit" shortstop prospects in the upper minors and IF healthy Furcal gives the A's not only a legit leadoff guy but a fantastic defensive shortstop allowing the young guys to be brought along slowly. Hopefully he is healthy, but it is a 40 million dollar gamble.
4. Sign John Patterson to a minimal contract with incentives and HOPE his forearm is back to form after a couple years off. Buy Low / High Reward type. If he is back to form he could be a top of the rotation guy. If not plug in one of the many #5(or should I say #7 types) on the roster and move on.
Some will ask what about Crosby? Well he is my 1 year stopgap at 2nd base until Adrian Cardenas is ready to hold down the fort in 2010. Crosby can't be moved with his salary so let him know 2nd base will help his "value" for FA. He don't like it, tough shit, he is being paid 5.25 million. I see Cardenas as the long term answer as a gap to gap hitter with a solid average and decent defensive skills. He is NOT a shortstop defensively or 3rd baseman where he will lack the power needed.
I send Cunningham or Gonzalez back to AAA to hone their swings as they are part of the future and don't need to be rushed when the A's aren't looking to make the playoffs in 2009. Getting regular AB's will only help long term.
I believe these moves make the A's a move entertaining team offensively and still provide the young arms a decent defensive team to aide their development allowing the younger "core"guys move time to season themselves in a low pressure situation.
Here is the Roster after the moves w/ projected salaries:
SS - Rafael Furcal -10 Million (true lead off the A's have lacked since Rickey)
C- Kurt Suzuki - 400K (takes pitches allowing Furcal to get in scoring position)
LF - Jack Cust - 3 Million (not my ideal #3 hitter, hopefully Chavy can retake)
RF - Ryan Ludwick - 400K (RH power bat A's lack)
DH - Eric Chavez - 11 Million (please be able to hit since you can't field anymore)
3rd - Kevin Kouzmanoff - 400K (like I said #6 hitter w pop)
CF - Gonzalez/Cunningham - 400K (low pressure spot)
2nd - Bobby Crosby - 5.25 Million (162 games till FA)
1st - Daric Barton - 400K (see #7 hitters)
Bench - Ryan Sweeney - 400K (a true 4th OF until power arrives)
Bench - Raj Davis - 400K (earned his spot, and is a great DEF replacement w blazing speed)
Bench - Rob Bowen - 650K (Powell can't be counted on to stay healthy, although since he only plays 20 games maybe bring him up and save 200K)
Bench - Eric Patterson - 400K (another guy can play a lot of positions, w speed)
Bench - Jack Hanahan -400K (Puke, I know but can play plenty of positions and won't be counted on HOPEFULLY)
The Pitchers:
SP: The Duke - 3 Million (Hope for a repeat of 2008)
SP: Sean Gallagher - 400K (Hope for Haren like strides between 1st and 2nd years)
SP: John Patterson - 500K (plus incentives based on games started) (?????)
SP: Greg Smith/Dana Eveland/Dallas Braden - 400K (ST will win the job, keeping spot till warm till Anderson or Cahill take over for long term)
SP: Gio Gonzalez - 400K (bring him along slowly and expect speed bumps but has stuff to be part of rotation in 2011)
Pen: Braden/Eveland/Smith - 400K (nothing exciting here except eating innings)
Pen: Andrew Brown - 400K (power arm for 5th -6th inning)
Pen: Jerry Blevins - 400K (getting groomed by grandpa for his role in 2010)
Pen: Santiago Casilla - 400K (power arm for 6-7th inning)
Pen: Alan Embree - 3 Million (Grandpa helps the kids through long season)
Pen: Ziggy - 400K (can do it all in any situation)
Closer: Joey Devine - 400K (takes over as closer w Ziggy mixed in depending on situations)
As you can tell this ISN't a world series team in the making but IF the prospects continue their growth and the younger guys continue to improve there is no reason to believe the A's can't compete with the largest payroll teams in 2011 for a ring. Yes - for the next couple years we may be looking up at the Angels but shouldn't be fighting for a top 5 pick either with improved offense.
These moves could realistically happen this offseason and the payroll is also low enough the A's can continue spending on the international scene and over slotting bonuses in the draft to continue having a top minor league system to give them the parts needed to make a move later on when they are truly competing for a CHAMPIONSHIP.
So those are my hopes for 2009 since tonights game was an utter disgust.
Thoughts????? I am sure people will rip it apart but the farm is intact and the power is sprinkled the line up.

Not bad
Although there are rumors that STL has soured a bit on Rasmus. Combine that with the fact they were interested in Sweeney, maybe we could acquire an elite hitter.
Although in the end, it’s just a dream. I doubt the Cards will really trade Rasmus.

I hope that's true
I would love to get Ramus, but even if the Cards are willing to trade him he’ll be expensive.
I doubt Sweeny/Mazzaro would get it done.
Sometimes life will strike you out on a curve ball and the only choice you have is to flip off the umpire and walk to first base anyway.

No, I also doubt Sweeney/Mazzaro would get it done.
But I’d be willing to pay more than Sweeney/Mazzaro for Rasmus. Carlos Gonzalez and Rasmus in the outfield together? Swoon.

If I was 100% satisfied that Rasmus was fully healthy, I would be willing to offer Cahill or Anderson plus another decent piece (of the Sweeney, etc ilk) for him.

Like the proposal for next year
but, I don’t see anybody giving Furcal a 3 year deal, especially for that much money. I know that he is a good player when healthy (where have I heard that one before?), but that is way too much money for a player that has back injuries. I think 2/22 might sound a little managable.
I would really like to see Ludwick trade happen. It would be nice to have some more pop in the lineup and I think that the deal is possible, although both Street and Crosby’s stock is down a bit right now.
As far as signing Patterson, I think that seeing as ’09 is going to be semi-competitive, I would like to see what some of the young arms can do in the rotation. I think that the rotation should be Duke/Smith/Eveland/Gio/Braden, in no particular order. We need to see what we have for the future.
Also, I would like to see Patterson/Cunningham at second and third. I think that Crosby has had enough time to show what he has to offer. Lets face it, Crosby is not going to be resigned when his contract expires. He should be a bench player, showing/teaching the kids for the future. Crosby won’t like that, but he’s had his chance.
Forget Kouzmanoff. I say we go after Ian Stewart. We have no real third base prospect. We need to bite the bullet, and make this deal happen. If we’re going to be competitive, we’re going to have to give up pitching to fill in the holes in our organization. We’re going to have top 10 draft pick next year. We can replenish traded pitchers that way.

I'm sorry, I must have missed the point where Ludwick stopped being
an over-30 role player with one good season in his career. Everything— I mean, everything— about him is screaming “fluke season” as loudly as humanly possible.
The A’s should be dumpster-diving for the NEXT Ludwick (I nominate Ryan Raburn), not paying through the nose for the current incarnation.

Wow!
That’s quite a scenario you have played out there Bud Light. Some interesting moves and I’ll be interested to see what the super-power analysts on this site will have to say bout it.
Myself, I’m not sure I’d ink Furcal to a three year deal coming off an injury, especially to that type of injury. And plus, I don’t see Crosby moving to 2nd base either. Say what you want about him, but I myself think he is a pretty decent SS, at least defensively.
Plus, he is in a contract year and I’m sure both he and the A’s will want him to have every opportunity to have a “one last chance to show what you got” sort of thing to benefit both sides since I imagine the A’s brass probably does not see him in their long term plans, for many reasons that don’t need mentioning.
John Patterson……who is he and who does he play for?

Also, FWIW Ludwick will be way over into arbitration next year. It’s questionable whether the proposed trade would save the A’s money at all.

"Definitely," "in theory but it's probably impossible," and "no", respectively
Bottom line, he plays for a divisional rival. It will be exceptionally difficult to get them to trade him in a situation which is not either an obvious win-win or one where Oakland is giving up far too much value.

Looks to me like Davis has two qualities Cust lacks:
1. The ability to find the ball with his bat more often when he swings
2. The ability to use the whole field (for singles and doubles as well as HRs)
Considering how stocked the A’s farm system is for starting pitching, I don’t see how swapping Mazzaro and a reliever for Davis doesn’t help the A’s, given their current needs for a 3Bman and for power – both of which are somewhat gargantuan.

By the way, Chris Davis: 5th round pick
So it’s not like the A’s just haven’t had the draft position to draft real power, potential impact bats, etc. It’s a factor, to be sure, but not every “legitimate power threat” who makes the major leagues was drafted in the first 10 picks. Just saying: I wish the A’s had found a few more of these picks over the past 3-4 years.

Methinks you be overgeneralizing
from a small sample size. Besides, once you get the ball over the heads of the infield, it really doesn’t matter where it goes.
Very few players are pronounced pull hitters in the outfield. Most of the big-time sluggers, when they pull the ball, it ain’t coming back anyway.

PT pointed out something I was unaware of
that is Ludwick will be Arby eligible so that deal doesn’t make as much sense.
I am still in favor of adding Furcal even if the rest of people think 2 yrs. Which I am fine with I just believe in these crazy markets someone will give him what he is looking for.
Kouzmanoff I also believe is a nice compliementary peice not the “stud” but another power source, like I said the #6 hitter for years.
I have always liked Patterson and believe he could bounce back.
Another arm I think could be bought cheap is Jeff Niemann since TB has a surplus. If the Ludwick deal didn’t happen flipping Huston for Niemann would also make sense. Niemann’s upside is greater than Braden/Smith/Eveland all of them I see as just #5’s
by Bud Light on Sep 13, 2008 10:15 AM PDT 0 recs
I don't know about Niemann
He’s kinda stagnated at AAA and hie stuff isn’t as good as it was in college. He turns 26 in before next season begins and hasn’t exactly dominated. He may max out as a #4, if that. If you could buy him cheap enough that would be OK.

On the contrary, defensively he can’t really play any.
I think you’re wasting spots on Patterson and Hannahan. I’d rather see those two go to a combination of Murphy, Petit, and Pennington.

Murphy does not strike me as an MLB caliber hitter.
Plus, his friggin cannon of an arm would be kinda wasted at second base…
I dunno, he seems like a pretty typical AAAA type, but you can probably blame that squarely on the Royals “development” of him.
I kinda think Petit and Pennington should compete for the job.

Not a big fan of a few of these ideas
-I like the idea about Furcal very much (although it would seem with his back we might be able to get a more favaorable deal)
-Don’t like the Ludwick idea very much
-Very skeptical that Duke will only get 3 mil next year. Since he was for the most part a very successful starter this year he is most likely looking at 5-8 mil (with health probably forcing him down closer to 5 than 8).
-Kouz seems like a good, but not excellent player, compounded by San Diego also desperately in search of offense, and thereby needing to get a large and very favorable package to trade it away.
- One idea the A’s might like to explore, since Cust has proven that he can provide relatively consistent home run power (desperately needed on this team), is to offer him a somewhat long term deal (3-4 years) and acquire cost certainty there.
by jasonlbe on Sep 15, 2008 3:34 PM PDT 0 recs
My block buster deal
Send Street, Barton, duke, and Murton to brewers for Prince Fielder. Brewers are offering him up so it works for them with a much needed starter, a closer, and a future 1b. The A’s get their clean up hitter.
by Arcman on Sep 15, 2008 9:46 PM PDT 0 recs
The Brewers might be willing to deal Fielder
From what I’ve read it’s something they’ve discussed. That said, you’re offer kinda sucks. They have no need for Murton and Duke is only a year away from FA. They could conceivably move Gamel to 1B, leaving them an OF or Braun, Hart and Cameron. They’d probably want Cargon or maybe Cunningham (if they think he can play CF) as part of the exchange. They’re going to lose Sabs and Sheets to FA (probably) so they’ll want SP as well. Considering Fielder has hit 80 HR the last two years and is 3 years from FA, the A’s offer starts with CarGon and Brett Anderson and the Brewers get to pick from there. The A’s might be able to keep one of Cahill/Anderson.
I think CarGon, Anderson, Mazzaro could form the basis of a deal. There’d probably have to be a couple more bodies in the mix but the main pain comes from the above 3.

Fielder is not worth trading for
He’s going to be overpaid in arbitration relative to other players. Arbiters love flashy stats like HR and RBI, as witness Ryan Howard’s $10 million score last season. So his “value added” will be mediocre, probably not much better than that of a free agent. I’d much rather get Zimmerman even before evaluating what they are likely to cost in return (and if the respective costs are as disparate as you’re making them out to be, the A’s would have to be nuts to choose Fielder).
Given all that, i’d rather just sign a slugger on the open market, as the A’s can part with money more easily than talent.

I don't think the Tigers would go for it,
but if they did I’d hope the A’s would do it.
