Outman, Sweeney called up
According to the SF Chronicle Josh Outman and Mike Sweeney will be called up and sent to the series at Kansas City. With the double header coming up I am sure the A's can use an extra pitcher in the bullpen. Especially one that has done some starting. I really was not expecting to see anyone from the Blanton trade this year, but he has done well. Mike Sweeney will get a lot of the DH time against lefties, especially since Cust seems to hit better when he plays the field. I'm sure there will will be more call ups once the triple-A playoffs are over. No one has been taken off of the 40 man roster yet, but Frank Thomas could be an option if they do not think he will play again this year.

Outman will come up, will he be in the pen or in the rotation?
I mean, its not like we have a lot of options.

Mike Sweeney
is such a good guy…I am glad that he is coming back so that he has a chance to show the rest of the league that he can still hit. I want him to find a job somewhere next year.

Unfortunately he wasn't anything special while healthy earlier this year
Nice guy so I hope he can get a job somewhere, but I’m not sure it’s going to happen.

MSweeney is a good guy, and I wish him well...
…but I kinda doubt anybody signs him next year. He’s just too broken down physically, I think. He had a couple flashes of decency this year, but they were just that… flashes.
He strikes me as the type that might make a great coach or manager someday.

Everybody in the organization seems to love the guy. I think keeping him around in a coaching capacity would rock.

Agreed, but I imagine the Royals will have something to say about that
Ryan Sweeney: I probably irrationally embraced him before you did.

I guess -- though, why they didn't just keep Sweeney instead of Ross Gload is strange to me
by mikev on Sep 2, 2008 2:09 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Really?
Because last year Gload was a better hitter. He’s also a far superior defensive player, can play the outfield, is a couple years younger, and was probably cheaper (at the time). He also can play more than 50 games in a season.
Gload hasn’t been very good this year, but I don’t think the choice was a bad one. It’s not like Sweeney would’ve helped them much.

Sweeney
Should be the hitting coach.

Is it too early to fire him because the A's hitters can't hit?

One scout said that Outman could be an Alan Embree-in-training, a hard-throwing lefty reliever.
Just what I was hoping for.
McGwire belongs in the Hall so put him there

No, he's bad every other year
And pretty decent every other year. It averages out to mediocre.

I don't think it's in a teams interest to purposely rais an "Alan Embree-in training"!

Sweeney
Where will he play? Unless he DH’s over Cust, there simply no room for him. No way Barton should have to split time with him, especially since we’r enot contending anyway.

Doesn't hurt to have a bat off the bench. I doubt he gets more thnan 30-35 at bats in September

If both of those guys are joining the team
Somebody just got DFAd (unless Gallagher or Duke are going to the 60-day DL).

But, it's September.
Weren’t they both on the 40 man roster?
Maybe Thomas is being moved to the 60 day?
by mikev on Sep 2, 2008 10:04 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
neither is on the 40 man. Thomas is one, but they will still need another move, probably

I must be missing something
but why is there a DH this weekend and no game on Sunday? What happened? Preparing for the potential hurricane?

Wanted an off day since they both have grueling September schedules so they decided on a DH in order to have Sunday off.

I don't think M Sweeney has been activated yet
also, Thursday’s announced starting pitchers are Dan Meyer and Kyle Davies. Both were Atlanta pitching prospects that the A’s were discussing in the buildup to the Hudson trade. I had read back then that the A’s actually preferred Davies but accepted Meyer.
by OaklandSi on Sep 2, 2008 6:15 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Davies was highly regarded - I remember at the time
that I was familiar with Davies but had not heard of Meyer.

the way I remember it
was that Beane initially asked for Davies and Marcus Giles in exchange for Hudson. The Braves said they’d prefer to substitute Meyre for Davies, and the A’s accepted. Then Bobby Cox lobbied his GM not to trade away Giles and the deal was temporarily dead…until Beane came back and said he wouldn’t insist on giles (that was at the time when he was trying to get Haren, a reliever and Barton from St. Louis for Hudson but the Cards were hesitant).
Once Beane told the Braves that he wouldn’t insist in giles the deal moved very quickly: three supposedly MLB ready players: the starter Meyer, reliever Cruz, and outfielder Thomas. Once that was announced Beane went back to the Cards and said"same deal, but you get Mulder."
by OaklandSi on Sep 2, 2008 7:08 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well, Meyer was MLB ready but his arm fell off.
Cruz was given up on too early, and Thomas…ok… 2 out of 3 ain’t bad though. I still don’t think that was a bad trade even though it didn’t work out. It’s not like Hudson would still be pitching with Oakland right now if the deal were never made.

In the bullpen next year as our lefties, very solid.
