Around SBN: Dolphins knock off Rams; get back into playoff race Bar-right-arrows

A's notes: Wavy feelings may have started on Street

So  whatever happens, we should see some resolution by saturday or so.still not convinced he'll get dealt, but its still possible to get multiple top prospects not on 40 man rosters or recent draftees that have yet to be eligible. I'd  atually think embree could get more interest if put on waivers

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/08/07/SPV11270QR.DTL

Post trade-deadline, any trades must include waivers - players either need to clear waivers first, or clubs may try to negotiate deals with teams that are awarded a waiver claim on a specific player. And on Thursday, there were rumblings that several teams had put in waiver claims on A's closer Huston Street.

Once a waiver claim is made, the clubs have 48 hours to work out a deal, and if nothing is agreed upon, the original team pulls the player off the waiver wire. So if Street indeed has been claimed, any deal would happen in the next day or two.

If the A's were to find a good match for a waiver-wire deal, they'd likely be looking to acquire top-notch infield prospects, particularly third baseman, at the Double-A level or higher.

I kinda feel bad for Street

cuz I think he might genuinely be a good guy but his last few save opportunities have become almost comical

No need to feel bad for him if he gets to the postseason

Getting traded after the deadline doesn't get you to the post-season.

Teams with the worst W-L record get first shot at claiming a guy off waivers. If we had traded Street, it would have been to Seattle or Cleveland.

The trouble is

“Top-notch infield prospects…at the Double-A level or higher” are likely, if not guaranteed, to be on a team’s 40-man roster. We could get a guy like Jason Donald or Allen Craig, who are solid but not elite prospects. Or we could go after guys like Wilmer Flores, a very young player at a very low level but with the potential to very soon be elite prospects as they move up the chain. I would rather the latter, personally.

And I would be surprised to see Street dealt now. I would not however be surprised to see Embree, Foulke, or Brown dealt. And the guy I keep rooting for to gain value is BoCro.

The only name that even remotely made sense to me for Street was Ivan DeJesus, if you limit the pool to

1) Contending team that needs immediate relief help
2) IF prospect in AA or above
3) Not on 40 man roster

They wouldn’t really trade him for Allen Craig or Chris Getz, would they? I guess they could do a PTBNL.

I'd trade Street right now...

...for a case of halfway decent beer. The league has more or less figured him out. It’s too bad he wasn’t dealt sooner, when we could have perhaps fooled someone into believing he can still close effectively at the MLB level. His stuff is so-so, his command ditto, and now he seems to be losing his confidence. On a good team he maybe pitches the 7th. I sincerely hope he has pitched his last 9th for us.
The typical Street AB this year has gone like this:
Pitch 1: Strike (swinging)
Pitch 2: Strike 2 (looking)
Pitch 3: Ball (slider 8 in. outside)
Pitch 4: Ball 2 (slider 6 in. outside, nibble nibble)
Pitches 5, 6, and 7: foul balls, waiting for the inevitable “hanger”
Pitch 8: Ball 3
Pitch 9: 88 mph BP fastball OR thigh-high hanging slider, BLAM! walk-off into the 14th row…

This guy has NO out pitch, and his stuff is not good enough to get through key AB's without making a mistake. His mistakes have been getting POUNDED. When a strong closer has you down 0-2, you are DONE. When Street has hitters down 0-2, it means nothing...
If BB can get ANYThING of value for this guy, he needs to be pitching for someone else SOON. Let's hope it's LAD, so I can laugh while he gets lit up pitching for a team I hate...PT seems to think Street gets a "bad rap" on AN, that Street's brilliance is overlooked by those who don't appreciate his "peripherals" and all that gobbledygook, but what it basically boils down to is this: 24 guys have given their all to win, and we need 3 more outs to wrap it up. Huston, can you get 3 guys out before the shi* hits the fan? More and more, the answer to that question has been "NO!"
"Peripherals" be damned...I just want us to have a closer that starts the stream of fans heading out for the parking lot as soon as he's announced...3 up, 3 down, wham bam thank you ma'am! Thanks to all for hearing me out...

by kitoko on Aug 8, 2008 2:21 AM PDT   0 recs

Of course, 80% of what I wanted to say is flying around somewhere in cyberspace...

Oh well. Anyway, yeah, ship him to the Dodgers, so I can enjoy seeing him get lit up with a team I hate. I couldn’t care less about his “peripherals”, to borrow a phrase from one of Huston’s last fervent and desperate defenders here on AN, I want someone to come in with the game on the line who has a reasonable chance to get THREE FRIGGIN OUTS! A guy with 88 MPH cheese and an 85 MPH slider, lacking confidence and with an alarming tendency to get taken deep would not be my choice. Thanks, Huston, and goodbye. NEXT!
Santa, my wish this year is to have Oakland develop/acquire/conjure up/uncover a true closer…one that gets the fans up out of their seats to head for the parking lot as soon as he starts warming up in the ‘pen…3 up, 3 down, wham bam thank you ma’am!
Oh, one more wish while I’m at it…someone on the infield that hits higher than .240. Thanx.

2010 would mean doing AA and AAA in 2009

Nothing I’ve seen so far suggests to me that he should be fast-tracked. He’s raw, hasn’t mastered command, and has already failed in a promotion attempt. I don’t see why 2010 would be more likely.

2 things

First, I think he would get a 4th option because it would only be his 5th season in a full-season league. Second, if 2010 is his last option, that would presumably put his MLB ETA at… 2011. I mean, he’d probably get a cup of coffee in 2010 but he wouldn’t be an integral part of the team.

i’m sure somebody on here can give a good synopsis of his philosophy on the position .

by jlanning17 on Aug 8, 2008 10:34 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Basically "closers" are inefficient

Very rarely is the 9th inning the highest leverage situation in a game, so it’s almost always stupid to save your best bullpen arm for that situation.

For example, Ziggy is our best bullpen arm, and he frequently comes into close games with runners on in a late inning. This is a MUCH more important situation than starting the ninth inning with anything more than a 1 run lead (because those games are almost always won).

The Tigers certainly need a reliever, but what do they have that we want?

Dan Worth and James Skelton? Lester Oliveros looks somewhat interesting in a lottery ticket kinda way.

To me it’s gotta be the Dodgers, with something built around DeJesus and Gallagher, or the White Sox with something built around Poreda. I don’t see why the White Sox really need Street, and the Dodgers have some pretty good relievers even without Saito.

I'd agree that Crosby is a Beane pet

Remember how fervently he defended him in the pre-season and in Blez’s interview earlier in the year? Also, I want to see how Crosby finishes this year out as it will be his first whole season of baseball in more than two years. He could still be valuable and actually improve, possibly. Plus, he is signed thru next year and no need to deal him from a position of weakness.

by mrod on Aug 9, 2008 11:56 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Ya but I can see the Dodgers trading for him if the A's picked up all his 2008 salary

I don’t see him as an upgrade on Izturis or McDonald either, mainly because he looks much worse in the field to me. Other than the Dodgers, maybe the Orioles in the off-season.

Regarding his 2B and RBI, I don’t see a .376 SLG as all that powerful. To me he can’t hit or field.

So that leaves Tigers – Dan Worth (not enough for me), Rangers – Elvis Andrus (no way they’d do that), Yankees – Eric Duncan or Kevin Russo (not nearly enough), Red Sox – Jed Lowrie (no way they’d do that). I’d add Dodgers – DeJesus, or Hu as a PTBNL (I wouldn’t do it but they might.)

by PaulThomas on Aug 8, 2008 10:27 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Well he is only 18, so just being in full-season ball is pretty good.

FWIW, Sickles had him #11 preseason on the Red Sox list (B-, with the note “high praise for a rookie ball guy”).

Goldstein had him #9 (3-stars, with the note, “Tejeda has all of the tools necessary to be a star-level shortstop. He’s a good hitter with a line-drive stroke who has the frame and the bat speed to develop into some power. Defensively, he has excellent range, crisp actions and a strong arm.”)

Callis had him #9 (with the note, ”...Tejeda could develop considerable power once he matures physically and as a hitter. He has quick hands and plenty of bat speed….”)

So he is generally considered a prospect, and may be more talented than DeJesus, Hu or even Lowrie. He’s just really far away from the majors.

MPH

I’ve read here on AN that Street’s velocity is down around 4 MPH or thereabouts. This would mean he’s either got a tired arm, is injured, is having mechanical difficulties, etc. At his age, it sounds unlikely he’s permanently lost his speed. There’s something wrong - just as there was something wrong with A. Brown after he came back from his operation, and it took a while to figure it out. Street is slightly injury-prone, and it wouldn’t surprise me if he wasn’t playing at 100%.

by richwol1 on Aug 8, 2008 10:33 AM PDT   0 recs

I think there's "merely" something wrong with his mechanics

... now, that could be masking/compensating for an injury, I dunno. But it’s seemed clear to me that when he’s struggled, he’s been dropping his arm slot and failing to get on top of his pitches.

...and when he's struggled in the past

we find out later that he’d been injured in one way or another, which is why the mechanics changed. I’d almost be willing to put money on the idea that he’ll go to the DL as soon as either Brown or Foulke is ready.

good thought

especially given oakland’s injury culture (for lack of a better term). he’s seen roughly 397 people go on the DL the last 2 years and seen the team’s W-L suffer from it, not to mention that even before his recent suckitude he was getting a lot of hate from A’s fans, so i wouldn’t be surprised if he doesn’t want to disclose some sort of injury.

by jlanning17 on Aug 8, 2008 10:36 AM PDT   0 recs

Unlikely

...that the feelings of A’s fans influences a ballplayer’s decision to disclose an injury. It may in fact be that management knows he’s not at 100% but feels he can still do the job and therefore shouldn’t go on the DL until either the injury worsens or someone else is ready to step in.

How many times have we seen suckitude from pitchers, just this year, that turn out to be injury-related? Calero, Brown, Foulke, Gallagher, etc. etc. etc?
