Open Thread: Game 113 - A's at Blue Jays (cont)
Gio seems to have settled down after a rocky first inning, where he gave up a three-run bomb, but the A's offense is as bad as it gets. They can't be any worse. Yes, they're being no-hit. Yes, it's 3-0 and feels like 10-0. Can things change? One can only hope. We go to the fifth...

Be honest....BE HONEST!!
When Gio gave up that 3-run bomb, how many people heard a voice from inside that said…OK , this one’s over?
Although I understand and love the idea of playing all 9…This year is all bad. I must admit to turning off the TV as that ball landed about 20-25 rows deep.
(However, I can’t get over my radio addiction…..It does help to numb the pain.)
I thought they would try really hard to get this guy a win on his first outing
but, they have to hit the ball to achieve that.
Jennifer, is there a reason why you roared?
My mlb.tv froze and now I’m wondering if I missed something important
Not really.
General displeasure.
Mark Ellis: sent down from Heaven to rob Evil of hits and hand out rainbows
Might have something to do with their ability
And the fact that to make contact, you have to swing the bat. Apparently they don’t know the unpire’s strike zone.
Marcum is good when he’s on but he’s facing about 5 hitters that would make another starting 9
I hate unproductive outs and the A's are producing them at record production
That's horrendous. And he's our best hitter.

Can’t argue with an average bat with amazing defense. The problem is when this team relies onhis offense.

You wish. It is not a 3 runs per game team.
As for Cust, if you think lots of strike outs means he’s a bad hitter, you’re completely asinine, just idiotic, you’re really stupid.
Sorry, I thought I was someone else for a minute.
it's not the K's per se
but half situational – there are specific times a K is worse than other outs, and what he does with the ABs that are not Ks.
What are the chances
That we get No hit today?
honestly, i think there is a 50% chance it happens.

anything more than 0 runs doesn’t really get it done right now.
Greg Smith's major league debut:
At Toronto, 3-run HR in the first inning, settled down, went 6 IP, 2 hits, 3 ER.
Gio today: 3-run HR in the first inning, settled down, now 5 IP, 3 hits, 3 ER.
That second strike to Eckstein was key – came inside off the plate (fouled away). That’s what he needed to do with Barajas, or throw a changeup. He’ll get it.

an essay that makes sense in my mind but will come out all wrong here...
he’s got the best eyes in the league. but the league includes the umpires. too bad him being right about a ball and an ump calling a strike doesn’t justify his 3-2 nonswing. it’s like getting pulled over wrongfully and infuriating the cop into giving you a ticket. you’re right, but you’re wrong. what does cust need to do? forget his great eye and learn the simple concept of the protective swing. it’s bee said here that cust = powerhitter = broad strokes. i kinda agree. but he needs to give himself more chances for broad strokes, an not swinging, even when earning a walk, is throwing away another chance at that big hit.
Q: cust’s flaw? he admits it all the time in interviews, but he says it sort of braggingly instead of as the burden it really is. A: “that’s just who i am.” he thinks he’s an innate hitter who has to do what he’s always done, back when the book on him wasn’t yet written. he doesn’t see the value of being someone else. and baseball, game of inches (alternately called balls or strikes) or not, is a game of adjustments. if i were pitching him, i’d trow 7 perfect just-barely-balls. he’d never swing (because they’re not those breaking balls that fool him once in a while). the ump would either call him out or render him otherwise ineffective by calling him a base runner.
don't care if i ever get back.

Ouch
2 non-strikes to Ellis force him to swing at crap. At least he hit it.

I hope Kimberly has the Ellis shirt on.

I don't think he's long for the starting lineup
He’ll replace Petit as utility man

You are only in the early stages of the sickness that is this season.
Next you get to go through the hope stage, then it’s not that bad stage”, then the “where is the nearest cliff stage”, then into the “even when you know it’s about to happen, you are shocked when it does”, and then into the “everything about the A’s pisses you off stage”. If no cure is found soon we may be looking at the worst case situation of becoming Giants and/or Angles fans. It a horrible epidemic.
On a completely unrelated note, Robinson Cano is the worst player ever
to pick up in fantasy games. He only turns it on in the second half (when the season is pretty much over).
its just funny at this point

You stole that from me. LOL!
You can't sit on a lead and run a few plays into the line and just kill the clock. You've got to throw the ball over the goddamn plate and give the other man his chance. That's why baseball is the greatest game of them all. ~Earl Weaver

I will not get angry.
I will not throw anything.
I will just enjoy the rest of the game.

That’s just a shitty-ass lack of effort right there. That’s exactly what a team that’s mailed it in does. Mark Ellis’ at -bat was a complete and total joke.
