Gio called up
According to this article, Gio's en route to the big club. While I would have preferred to have him stay down just a little bit longer to keep working on his control, he has been dominating AAA at times. I suspect if Meyer didn't have to pitch last night, he would have gotten the start Thursday. Instead, looks like it's Gio's debut. If Eveland gets his control back, I wonder if he comes back up (and Gio goes down) in a few weeks. Well...let's see what the kid can do Wednesday.

Finally If Run Support Tanks as bad as it has been lately Gio better pitch shut-outs if he wants to win ball games

Since I officially entered "Root for the Fantasy Team First" mode a while ago
At least I’ll finally get some K’s out of that bench spot.

Finally
My wish has been granted!
Get the guys up now, start getting experience NOW. Why wait? I want to rebuild/win sooner than later and there is no better experience than the real deal.
Even if people aren’t ready, why baby them? What is the advantage of dominating hitters @ AAA but not pitching in the bigs so you don’t get your self esteem hurt?
How about pride. Pitchers need that & they need to learn from mistakes.
I don’t care how bad/good Gio pitches, I just hope he stays put.
by BillMoresi on Aug 5, 2008 2:15 PM PDT 0 recs
There are plenty of reasons to wait
Service time, options (depending on the guy), ruining his confidence by having him fail when he’s not ready.
It’s silly to act as if there’s no logical reasons to not call up certain guys.

If it’s silly to ask why wait to call someone up, than it’s got to be at least ten times more silly to say you’re waiting so you don’t “ruin his confidence”.
Personally, I’d rather see tough pitchers on the mound, like Dave Stewart. These fickle pitchers who have their “confidence ruined” by being called to the majors haven’t what it takes with the bases jammed, 2 outs and protecting a one run lead in game 7 of the ALCS.
You should want pitchers who thrive on pressure and to find out if they can hack it is a good thing.
In regards to options, the hope is we call him up and never have to send him down again. If we’re truly rebuilding, why send him down like we’ve done with Eric Patterson after such a small sample size.. why not let them grow on the roster?
Service time… yea, rot away in the minors because we don’t want to use your valuable service time in the minors.
How about the A’s learn to be… not so cheap?
Being in Oakland and being a “small market franchise” is laughable and of their own design, unfortunately. There is no way a team that has performed as well as the A’s have consistently should be a “small market”, unless your organization is not that well run, which the A’s aren’t in certain regards. I live in Folsom, CA and I can’t see the A’s games. I just moved up here from Sacramento, CA, home of the River Cats, and I didn’t get to see the games. The radio signal sucks. Maybe it’s time they invested some money in making the product available so people could even be interested.
I mean, how else in holy hell can you explain the Giants being so amazingly popular with their horrible play compared to the A’s? Barry Bonds isn’t playing this year so that is no longer an excuse…..

That creates a spot on the 40-man roster
But they need one on the 25-man roster as well. And there are already 12 pitchers on the roster, so it’s not going to be a position player.
My hope is that Gallagher gets sent down, with Meyer moving into the rotation. But that’s a long shot.

Can we just use his alternate nickname
Metro
Possibly for away games, or when he has a poor outing, but lasts a ton of innings on a small tank of gas.
The Stockton Ports pitching staff is better than the Orioles.

Not really
Even before yesterday’s disaster, he had walked 15 batters in 22 1/3 IP (which is more than 6 BB/9IP) since coming to the Oakland. After yesterday, it’s now 6.75 BB/9 IP.
He has swing-and-miss stuff, but control problems that severe usually need to be fixed in the minors or in the bullpen.

True
His walk rate has been up-and-down his whole career – it was bad in AA, good in AAA, and horrible in his first call-up for the Cubs last year.
I guess an optimist would say that proves he can straighten things out, and a pessimist would say it shows that for whatever reason he just doesn’t have enough of a handle on his mechanics to put the ball where he wants to with any kind of consistency. And you can tell which camp I’m in right now. Pitchers who don’t throw strikes tend to annoy me.

That's certainly reason for long-term optimism
Like I said, he has swing-and-miss stuff, and that alone gives him higher upside than pitchers like Smith, Eveland, or Blanton. I’m just skeptical that he’s going to be able to put it all together any time soon. That’s the other side of being only 22.

Somebody explain the service time issue to me
Because, frankly, it’s stupid to call him up now if it means he’s arby eligible a year sooner.
by mikev on Aug 5, 2008 2:24 PM PDT 0 recs
Probably won't mean that
Since there’s only about 60 days left in the season, he’ll only accumulate 60 days this year. That’s too few to be a Super 2 in a couple years. The A’s should still have 3 pre-arby years (09, 10, 11).

Gio Pitching Wednesday
Ken Korach said in his conversation with Marti Lurie that Gio is starting Wednesday’s name. Duke has been pushed back to start on Thursday. (Braden is scheduled to start Friday in Detroit; beyond that wasn’t known.)
by McMillinBr on Aug 5, 2008 3:15 PM PDT 0 recs
That makes sense - Gio pitched Friday
so that’s his regular turn. Duke could use the extra day more.

but I’m not sure if what you’re asking is possible. It may be (and again, I’m not sure) that if you delete the fanpost, it’s gone gone and gone from everywhere. Or not.

they just told a funny story during the game (for those who don’t have radio) that his passport was in Florida so a friend of his flew with the passport to Chicago where he met up with Gio on his layover to give him his passport. Nice friend! Hope they’re sliding him some $ .
