8/28 Minor Athletics
A nice day on the minor league front as Sacto was a hitting machine and Stockton followed suite with some nice pine power. Scout.com predicted in the beginning of the season that an minor athletic would hit 30 homers. We will probably have not only a 30 homer guy in Brown, but also a 40 homer guy in Carter. Not to shab.
Here is the rundown...
| Final | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 | R | H | E | |
| Sacramento |
0 | 1 | 4 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 2 | 0 | 1 | 8 | 12 | 1 | |

First five on the lineup card...
Cunningham CF 2-5 2R, 2K
Putman RF 3-4 2R, 2b, RBI
Murton LF 2-4 2R, 2b
Bankston 1B 2-4 1HR, 3RBI
Conrad 2B 2-5, 3RBI
Outman dominated, looking more and more like a nice 5th starter, long relief man option. Man our pitching depth is so deep right now. There is hope!

| Outman (W, 1-0) | 5.1 | 4 | 0 | 0 | 2 | 7 | 0 | 1.76 |

Recker C (wouldn't it be awesome to be a baseball player named Recker!) 2-4 2b
Cardenas SS 0-3 BB
Anderson pitching. Seemed he had some bad luck, as he wasn't hit too hard with extra bases and he had a fair share of K's. Not a bad day after China.

Good to see Buck playing well.
Id love to see him up and back in the lineup.

Dude ...
We have a guy on Vancouver named “Dusty Napoleon.” That is so fucking awesome.
Of course, we actually have two guys named “Dusty” on that team, which is even more fucking awesome.

I'm excited for Midland next year
Sulentic LF
Spencer RF
Doolittle 1b
Carter 3b
Brown CF
Donaldson C
Cardenas SS
Horton 2b
Mitchell DH
With Leon, FDLS, and Banwart heading the rotation and Italiano, HRod, and Demel in the pen, that team could be going places (and could outhit the 2008 major league team).

Per Billy Owens
The A’s don’t know where Carter’s defensive home is going to be. Also, the A’s are sending Donaldson to the AFL but he won’t be catching. My guess is he’ll be playing some 3B.

is there no chance of donaldson staying a catcher?
personally i’d much rather see a decent bat at C, there are already enough catchers moving to other positions (barton, maybe powell).

I think they just want the versatility
It’s the AFL, so, you know, whatever.

I think it's about practicality
Donaldson started as a 3B but converted to C in college. Kurt Suzuki is getting the job done in Oakland but there’s no one in line to replace Chavez, who doesn’t look like he’ll play 3B again.
If Donaldson shows something with the glove in Arizona it could speed up his ascent to Oakland.

I doubt he will even be promoted to AA
I know the A’s like to challenge their prospects, but he really hasn’t done anything this year.

Looks good for now
But I would bet that Doolittle and Cardenas won’t be back in Midland for the start of the season. Both have been selected for Arizona this fall which suggests to me that the team sees them in that “2007 Travis Buck-tabbed for AAA but could make the team if everything breaks in their favor” bracket for next year

I would take that wager
He has struggled at Midland (although he has showns signs of improvement the last few weeks), but I don’t think the team would have him play in the fall league if they just wanted to send him back to AA in the spring. I definitely don’t have insider info or anything but I think the team wants to challenge him in the fall to get him ready for a promotion.

Same
I think the determination of whether he goes to AA, AAA or even the majors will be a decision that the team makes as of next spring.
I suspect the team will be a little more cautious on Cardenas, because he’s younger and has to play a harder position.

Italiano
I would not be surprised to see Italiano back starting next year, perhaps first at Stockton, then a mid-season move to Midland.

I dunno, he doesn't really seem to have what he needs to be a starter from what I've seen of him
I think he’s destined for the bullpen anyway, so they might just decide to move him there now with all the starting pitching depth.

Can't cut bait that soon
the SP depth will evaporate quickly if you move them to RP that quickly. Italiano still has time.

On top of which, the team has even more depth at RP than SP
Only two relief contracts (Street and Embree) are expiring in the next 4 years, and there are a ton of legitimate RP prospects in the minors already. Lansford, Bailey and Rodriguez already appear to have been converted over, although it’s not clear how permanent some of those are. Then add in Carignan, Demel and the huge pile o’ generic lefties in Sacramento, and factor in the possibility of Meyer and Braden working out of the pen. The depth is almost stupefying— the team could probably trade the entire MLB bullpen away and still have a better group than some teams do.

I think Bailey's move is permanent
Lansford is young enough that if he can come up with a 3rd pitch in the offseason he could get another shot at the rotation.
Rodriguez turns 22 next year but it’ll be his 2nd year on the 40 man roster. He might get another shot at starting in ST but if he doesn’t show the A’s everything they could hope for they’ll make him a relief pitcher full time.

Not going to try to rank them right this second
but offhand I’d say these guys would be under consideration:
Seattle: Triunfel, Halman, Aumont
LA: Adenhart, Wood, Walden, Conger
Oakland: Anderson, Cahill, Doolittle, Cardenas, Gio, Cunningham, Brown, Simmons, Mazzaro, Carter
Texas: Feliz, Ramirez, Andrus, Kiker, Holland, Poveda, Smoak

California League Got One Award Wrong
Cal League closer of year went to Andrew Johnston, a second year Cal League pitch-to-contact guy who couldn’t strike out my mother. Johnston still pitches to contact in AA, but the AA hitters are making better contact. Johnston is getting beat up bad in AA.
Sam Demel can close circles around Johnston. Strikes out everyone. 18 saves, even with the Ports spreading out the save opportunities. Demel deserved the award.
