Cargon sent back to AAA; Swooney Activated
Struggling Carlos Gonzalez has been optioned to AAA Sacramento while Ryan Sweeney has been activated from the disabled list to take his spot on the 25-man roster.

This isn't huge news as Cargon's been really struggling lately and even he indicated that he was kind of lost at the plate recently. He will likely only be down in the minors for a week or so, so not huge news but noteworthy nonetheless.
Honestly, he probably should have spent most of this season in AAA working on his plate discipline anyways, so to me this move was a "back to the future" type thing. Hopefully, he figure something out with his swing in a less-pressure-filled environment.
Looks like we'll be seeing a lot more of Rajai Davis over the next few days, which doesn't seem like such a bad thing with the way he has been swinging the bat and stealing bases...

That's why looking at batting average is a silly thing to do.
I’m not sure I’d take Gomez offensively over any of the A’s regulars in the lineup tonight, and he has a better average than everybody but Swooney.

That would be a nice confidence booster.
Maybe he could be that “hero” that leads them to PCL and AAA glory for the 2nd straight season. Then he could come back in mid-September with a lot of confidence, which he clearly doesn’t have much of right now…

I second OaklandSi
sounds like a productive scenario.

He was playing fairly well before the slump
Had some trouble against lefties he needs to work on and his K/BB ratio also suffered, but he played excellent defense and did some nice things at the plate.

Unfortunately nobody was saying that when he was tearing it up for a few months.

he hasn't posted an OBP over .318 since his 3rd game
I wouldn’t exactly call that tearing it up.

At the rate he was getting extra base hits...
it was tearing it up, you have to remember how young this guy is and that he really shouldn’t have even been in the big leagues yet.

There was a stretch where he was tearing it up
People get obsessed with OBP, which is how hitters like Garret Anderson and Howie Kendrick get underrated round these parts. When you’re hitting .270 with a truckload of doubles, plus four HRs, and you’re stinging the ball most every time up, you’re doing just fine.

+1
everyone knows cargon can hit, but he was in the minors to develop some plate discipline. he didn’t but was still was called up, and not surprisingly continued to have the same issues.
