Open Thread: Game 132 - A's at Angels (Cont.)
Rajai Davis made his impact known in the first at bat of the game, lining a single of Joe Saunders' hand, and quickly following with a stolen base. Whether rattled or bruised, Saunders never really recovered, giving up a run in the first, and a glorious five-spot in the second, including a two-run double by Bobby "All he does is hit doubles" Crosby and a two-run tater by Emil "I am a born 3rd place hitter" Brown.
Now up 6-0 in the bottom of the 4th, the A's are looking to add on, while Gio Gonzalez quietly goes about his business, keeping the Angels offense off the board, with only a single hit.
Shhh - don't disturb the mojo! *quiet* go a's */quiet*

This is terrific managing, IMO
Instead of going to a long-reliever (Saarloos), Geren is treating it like this inning is “the inning” and going for immediate damage control – actually my choice would have been Ziggy, which is why I don’t like him closing. But Embree can go 2 IP, and if he’s on his game can diffuse the rally.

Saarloos is the best way to lose this game.
Much rather see Gio than Saarloos.
I see the future. I see cake.
Or he could light a fuse

No doubt the right move for the win...
but is it the right move for Gio?

Oh, and what does it say about Emil Brown
that he has a HR and 3 RBI tonight and I can’t wait to get rid of him? Something about an ill-advised dive and then walking over to retrieve the ball.

ok, so it's not just me. that's good
They show up in bunches, which in any other thread would be ok. But not good for the immediate reaction.

I was recently promoted and our CEO from our parent
company came to town. I was trying to stay out of the dinner conversation until he mentioned that he lived in the Oakland area during the late 80’s and early 90’s. We dominated the conversation the rest of the night with stories of Eck, Moore, Stewart, Welch, Weiss, etc.
I brought a picture that I took with Korach the next day and I think I’m on his good side! Still avoided much discussion about the new bonus plan :-(

Besides the series win issue
Bob has probably looked at the September schedule and realized that the A’s won’t play a single game that means diddley-squat in the standings after this Sunday’s game vs. the Twins. So, sometimes you have to manufacture a bit of intensity.

Quite frankly...
a team like the A’s can’t afford to carry any players as ‘pinch runners’. They have shown a great inability to ‘steal’ a run throughout the season. Maybe we should carry a couple of ex-cons on the roster to ‘steal’ those runs!

One would wonder....
why Rajai Davis would not have been put into the lineup more often this season, given the A’s constant offensive struggles. It seems like they don’t ever factor speed into the equation as it puts pressure on the defense in several different ways. Maybe once Rickey is back in the fold there will be a return to an emphasis on speed in the offensive game.
