8/26 Minor Athletics
This is Dan crossing his fingers that this post does not falter once again. It was another frustrating night for our boys in the minors--but there were a couple fresh faces in the box scores.
SAC---They had an interesting night. I was surprised when I looked at the box score and I see our boy C Gon in the line-up, just after I had seen him on tv against the Angels. Anyway--here are the two box line scores. and a few highlights.

Mazzaro came in and pitched in the April 6 game which accounts for his inflated ERA. So, if you think about it, Mazzaro made a start in AAA and was demoted to AA, selected as the best pitcher there after his great season, and now returns to AAA where he has been for the last month. Is that confusing--or does that make sense. Sort of funny to think of it that way. Ohh--and he is still giving up way too many hits. Only 2 were for extra bases, so I wonder how many of those 7 singles were hard hit.

Nice game from our boy Henry. I can't remember the last time that he pitched this many innings without surrendering a walk. Very nice outing. Our boy Carignan also pitched well, although he did surrender a walk which has been his achilles this season. Any chance Carignan sees time in the Oakland bullpen next season?
STO--I don't expect much from this team any longer. Its not really their fault. I think Taj said it best when he mentioned that this team has had too many good players who just happened to be promoted. There is little consistency and the pitching staff has struggled because of that. The four starters everyone praised in the beginning have moved on--three promotions and an injury. At this point I check their box score to see if Carter or Brown homered, and to see is Donaldson is still racking.

Capra is walking too many batters to start his young career. However, he is putting in some good inning of late and keeping his ERA at about 3.80. This Kerfoot character has been putting together a very strong season coming out of the bullpen and offering multiple innings. Over his last 10 outings he has a 2.12 ERA, 17IP, 17 S) and only 4 BB.

Hunter in AZ FALL LEA???
Less than 1 percent chance if that. He has no minor league ball under his belt. He is not fully recovered from injuries that slowed him this past year in college despite playing for Team USA..
Az Fall League is a hitters paradise and is really tough on good pitching prospects with all the top hitting prospects sent there.

A's have two slots open for the AZ Fall League
Both, I believe, are Pitcher Slots.
So as I see it, there are several possibilities.
I doubt we send James Simmons-A’s are being overly cautious with his arm and he already had an injury this year I believe, combined with sleep apnea.
I could though see the A’s sending Henry Rodriguez. As for the other slot, we could send Cahill or Anderson. Of the two, I think Anderson would be the one more likely to be sent than Cahill. Anderson was the one of the two who missed time due to injury, and has much fewer IP than Cahill. Anderson’s injury was not a major arm injury, but a thumb injury if I remember right, so it should allow him to tackle the AFL and get his IP up, but not too far.
But, the A’s could very well decide to have both Cahill and Anderson take rests after the Olympics.
So who else is left?
Mazzaro? Gio? Possibly, but they’d probably rather keep his IP down right now.
Here’s an interesting idea; how about sending Gallagher?

However, I can’t recall any injury history coming from Simmons when he was drafted. And I think that the A’s would like to see Hunter rest following his work internationally. If Hunter is chosen—wouldn’t it be great to see him dominate the same way Street did a few years back.

Yeah, kind of weird
Only thing I can think of in those respects are that they have too many 1B and Catchers on the team, and to get them playing time, will play them elsewhere. Or perhaps the A’s requested Donaldson to play 3B to prepare for a possible position move. I think for Doolittle it is probably the former, as there really is no other reason to move a good defensive 1B off 1B unless you have a lot of other 1B’s who, unlike Doolittle, can not play elsewhere on the field.

For those who think that Hunter might make the Arizona Fall League, he will not.
The rules, according to the PDF, say that only 1 player below AA as of August 4th is allowed on the AFL Roster, and the A’s have Donaldson going to the AFL, who is currently in A+ Stockton.
So we’re looking at two pitchers at AA or above;
Henry Rodriguez
James Simmons
Trever Cahill
Brett Anderson
Vin Mazzaro
Jared Lansford
Those are the likely pool we’d choose from. Pick 2.

Lansford...
With his conversion to RP his innings are easily the lowest. Plus with how well he’s pitching towards the end of the season they may want to see if that hot streak can continue against top competition.
The other spot is a tough call. Simmons, Cahill, Anderson & Mazzaro are all guys I’d be surprised if they extended just based off how careful teams are with SP innings these days.
Maybe H-rod, but his confidence is so iffy that throwing him in there against top prospects-laden lineups could be a real killer.

I’m not sure why they’d bother to just send a punching bag, unless they’re really of the opinion that the league is damaging to a player’s confidence.
I suppose they could use it as sort of an audition for some of the nonroster players like Brad Kilby and Ryan Wing.
