Open Game Thread: Game 131 - A's at Anaheim (cont.)

Dallas Braden is pitching to contact nicely.  He's gone seven innings and only given up a Mike Napoli home run.

Braden also just had a fantastic web gem.  A's up 2-1 going to the eighth.

LET'S GO A'S!!!!!!

I'm almost scared of the new thread

while it is comfy, the last one has had seven innings of beauty by Dallas in it.

But pics of DWright kill EVERYTHING. It could be a picture of DWright’s shoelace and it would get twice the hits of an actual nice picture of anyone else.

I do have 1 pic that combines the two biggies – DWright himself bending over – and that’s like the big bopper of my entire Flickr account.

Geren is a moron.

A pitcher’s gone 82 pitches and been dominant through those 82.

You have a rotation full of rookies. Walls will get hit by rookies. You need bullpen pitchers then. Don’t use them when a pitcher can obviously go more.

I see the future. I see cake.

by Blicks on Aug 25, 2008 9:05 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I wouldn't call Braden dominant

by any means. He didn’t have a strikeout in seven innings.

by Blez on Aug 25, 2008 9:07 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Maybe not a "dominant fashion"

but mowing down one of the best teams in MLB for 7 innings that has guys like Teixeira in it, giving up only one run (on a solo HR to boot), and not getting into any major jams is definitely a masterful performance. All in 82 pitches.

I see the future. I see cake.

by Blicks on Aug 25, 2008 9:12 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Still you have excellent

bullpen guys in Devine and Ziggy, why not use them to make sure you retain that lead and let Braden leave feeling good about himself? I don’t think it’s as clear as you make it sound. I certainly wouldn’t use the term “moron” in this instance. Other times this year, sure. Not today.

Doesn't matter. A's aren't in contention.

And the other 4 starters are also very inconsistent and could very easily go 4 innings or 7 innings.

And there’s always pulling him if there are baserunners.

I see the future. I see cake.

by Blicks on Aug 25, 2008 9:14 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Even though it's a lost season

I’d rather see them beat the Angels then let a pitcher get 100 pitches of work in.

I think it was a great move...

If he gives up the lead he’s demoralized (even though it wouldn’t be warranted). He got through 7… which was awesome. Let him soak up the win.

that goes against about 150 years of baseball wisdom. Which, without actually analyzing it, seems like a bad idea. Maybe someone should do a study.

Ziggy’s ERA went from 0.41 to 0.40. That’s how good he’s been this year: he pitches a scoreless inning and his ERA goes down by 0.01.

Just thought of this symmetry

Someone fell on Mike Piazza, and Jack Cust became a fixture on the A’s.
Someone fell on Mark Ellis, and now Eric Patterson is at second, and….??

Yeah

All of a sudden, Dallas Braden is a legit candidate for a rotation spot next year (when we might actually compete). I didn’t really see that one coming, especially considering he still doesn’t use his screwball, which he was known for in the low minors.

Could be

The screw ball wasn’t necessary. It wasn’t tonight, anyway.

by lynnzgal on Aug 25, 2008 9:38 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

hearsay

i heard commentator on radio or tv say A’s organization asked him to “abandon” the screwball while in AAA.

don't care if i ever get back.

by AV on Aug 25, 2008 9:40 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

That's true

But my point is that he was a much better prospect when he had the screwball in his arsenal. I just wonder what he’d be like if he still used it.

But isn't the screwball

hard on the pitcher? I f he can throw efficiently without it, why would you want him to continue to throw it?

by lynnzgal on Aug 25, 2008 9:49 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Screwballer

Would he forget how to throw it? or get rusty? why couldn’t he bring it back?

by LibrariAN on Aug 25, 2008 9:49 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I hope he can do without it permanently

Screwball = wrecked shoulder
