Open Game Thread: Game 127 - A's at Seattle
Oakland Athletics @ Seattle Mariners
The A's limp into Seattle with a ridiculous number of injured players, including two more starting pitchers in Sean Gallagher and Justin Duchscherer.
Yes, I'm still watching these games despite how painful it is to hope and see something special from players like Carlos Gonzalez and Kurt Suzuki. And even hoping that someone named Daric Barton wakes up and becomes all he can be. At the same time, this is the issue when rebuilding. Like a manic depressive, the highs can be incredibly high with the youth the A's have, but the lows can feel like an inescapable morass that threatens to suck all the fandom right out of you.
The A's send Greg "Nibbles" Smith to the mound tonight. I hate to call him that, but he has definitely earned it with his seeming inability to throw strikes consistently and how unwilling he also appears to pitch inside. I do think Smith is a quality pitcher and will be a great fourth or fifth guy in a solid rotation, but he needs to get over that and go after hitters more.
Here is his stat line:
The Mariners put out Ryan Rowland-Smith tonight. It'll be the battle of the Smiths. I wonder if Morrissey will be contributing. Here are Rowland-Smith's stats:
The Australian is actually pitching better against right-handed batters than lefties despite the fact that he's a lefty.
So then the lineups are as follows:
LET'S GO A'S!!!!!!!!

This is the first time in a long time where we’re better than the team we’re playing.
Doesn’t mean we’ll win, of course…

Can somebody seriously just make Dave Niehaus go away?
I don’t care how good he used to be, he died 5 years ago and nobody has told him. He just got as excited about a fouled bunt as he did a home run double off the wall that he called a home run because he doesn’t have a clue about what’s going on anymore.
This is ten times worse than Harry Caray in his final days.

When are they going to get rid of those yellow stripes??
Look, if it bounces back, it’s in play, stripe or no stripe… Why complicate things??
I know, the A’s and the Coli have a similar problem, but put some “faux edifice corniche” made out of styrofoam up there, and if a ball hits it, it blasts apart like a fluorescent tube dropped from the third floor. No controversy, plenty of fun…

I guess a lot of people are watching the 49ers play practice football?
For what it’s worth, the 49ers made Kyle Orton, pretty easily the worst starting QB in the NFL, look ok tonight (actually he had 3 or 4 terrible passes that receivers made great catches on). That’s a really, really bad sign for the 9ers defense. They’re gonna be battling this terrible Bears team for the #1 pick I think.

Serious Question- Has Frank played himself out of a roster spot in 2009??
I have been a huge fan of him and I was patiently hoping for his return all through June and July but he has been looking very weak since his DL return.
I am wondering if his slide lately will impact the decision on offering him a deal for next year.

Honestly, I think so. The A's need to keep the DH spot open
potentially for Chavez or Cust (if, say, Sweeney, Gonzalez, and Cunningham are all effective). And Thomas is going to be a 41-year who is slow and is no lock to keep hitting well.

I will say that his anger could be related to his slump. Hey, maybe this will get him going.
I would love for him to turn it around and come back next year.
I do think its going to be tough to keep a guy who can’t play any position, especially if Chavez can’t play 3B.

Hitting coach sidebar
When people say, “The team’s not hitting, fire the hitting coach…” here is an exact example of why the hitting coach is only an independent factor in team hitting. Ty VanB has informed CarGon (so I’ve read) that Carlos is all out of wack with his hands. The kid can then say, “Oh, …Yeah!! Right…gee thanks!!” and then go back out and continue to do what he is doing wrong.
How does firing the hitting coach solve that??

And on top of that, it's not like some of these things can just be fixed in a day or two.

For the record
I’m not a “fire the hitting coach” type (I’m pretty sure you weren’t inferring that I was).

Practice...
is the only way that CGon will get better at hitting off of lefties. Like you said why not let him get the experience, he is so dang young that he just needs time to work on his stroke against lefties. He’s a great talent but definitely got a lot to work on before he moves to the next level of big leaguer.

Good times.

How sad that Daric Barton's average is literally
about .100 points lower than I predicted?

But Daric said he appreciates management letting him fight
thru it
Even if it takes three eyars to do it
I hate unproductive outs and the A's are producing them at record production
