How come no one blame Geren and the coaches?

How is it that Geren and company are escaping blame for the current swoon? I have not read a single article either here or the SF Chronicle or Costa that puts some of the blame on Geren. A good manager gets his players to excel above what they are capable off. It is true that not many people expect this team to be any good this year and Geren can shrug his shoulders and say it's not his fault because he got nothing to work with. I just want to know how the interview went between Beane and Geren 2 years ago. Did Beane tell Geren that he wasn't expecting anything from him because the team is in rebuilding mode? What is the purpose of having a manager if he is not going to get his team to play up to higher expectations?

The team is likely to finish below .500 this year and most likely, again next year. Does Geren expect to keep his job if the team finish below .500 all 3 years under his care? How is it that Geren still kept Burkleo as hitting coach for creating the worst offensive team in the AL 2 years in a row?

No one dares to say it but I'm gonna say that we have the worst coaching staff in the league, with the exception of Curt Young. Some of it are the players' fault but Geren and Co. have to take huge blame for the current state of this team.

No one blame Geren because

everyone recognize that Oakland not fielding a major league quality lineup.

Actually, if you read the game threads, Geren pretty much get blamed every time a pitcher give up runs.

It's difficult to blame the coaching staff when the team is made up of who it is

I kind of hate to be rude but this shouldn’t be hard to figure out if you actually look at the way the team is put together.

Oh, and...

A good manager gets his players to excel above what they are capable off. (sic)

Did you just start following the team after the Harden/Blanton deals, or were you watching the first half of the season?

That was Geren's good twin

This is the evil one.

I blame Geren

I hate him so much. Our offense sucks! He knows that, we know that, everyone in the world knows that. So what does he do to help it? Nothing! He needs to start playing more small ball! Like bunting, going for the singles, and most importantly STEALING! Stealing avoids are numerous double plays and gets our runners into scoring position.

I just wish Geren was a little more aggressive manager and would argue and defend his team out on the field.

I wish we had Macha again!

What we've been doing more of this year

You know, popping up bunts to the catcher, getting thrown out trying to steal. It’s really exciting stuff.

Beats a double-play grounder for excitement.

Trying to steal, anyway.

Yet the A's have a stolen base success rate of 76% this year, which...

...is tied for 4th in the AL and above both the AL and ML average of 72%.

So when they were in first place in May

they banked all the “praise”, and now Geren and staff get to zero out “blame” with “praise payments”.

C’mon, people on the field make it or break it. At this level, what coaches can do with a player’s given set of skills, either to enhance those skills, or diminish them, is trivial.

As Rotoworld stated, Eveland is so bad, he must be injured. How is the manager going to pry that out of a guy if he won’t be honest??

I think Geren is twice as awful as Macha

I just haven’t blamed him recently because I’ve been busy and haven’t been watching as many games since the All-Star break. Trust me, “Geren sucks” is is no short supply.

I was wondering when this FaNpOst

was going to show up. Is this the first official, “Fire Geren Now” diary? If so, I look forward to many more in the near future. Which is kind of unfortunate for Bob. Here he has been given his first MLB job, and yet his roster hasn’t really changed all that much from the Cats. Bob, if you’re reading this, your biggest mistake was winning in the PCL. Should have finished second, that way you wouldn’t have been expected to dominate the AL with AAA talent.

"Given his first MLB job" is right

Does anyone else think that it’s highly unlikely that the best Manager for the A’s right now is Billy Beane’s Best Man from his last marriage? If Geren goes, who does BB install? His best friend from high school?

I’m guilty as anyone else. Other than the training/medical staff, we tend to let a lot of
A’s management off the hook for their role in problems with the team. Maybe there are more qualified guys than Van Burkleo and Geren…? Just maybe?

Geren no miracle worker

Look at the team he has been given. Of the batters on the team only Sweeny and Suzuki are better than 250 hitters. Crosby and Ellis are just average hitters. That leaves him with rookies Cargon and Barton. Hannahan and Cust are part time bench players. And a few back up non starters. Geren has done the best he could do under what was given. I have picked them around .500 team at begining of season before the trades of harden and blanton. On that note the hitting coach Ty is doing a bad job. You can see many of these hitters getting burned by the same pitches and not adjusting. That is the hitting coach fault for not adjusting hitters. He needs to help not be stubborn and have them wioth 1 batting stance for every pitcher.

When did Crosby become an average hitter?

Did he go 20 for 3 in a game I missed?

The reason for this is in part many A's fans discount the value of the manager

Fairly or not the role of the manager is often downplayed by many fans. I think this is an effect of the book Moneyball. That book expressed the view that the GM is more important. Because of this and Beane’s domination of the franchise the GM gets more of the attention/ heat/ praise.

Other fan bases complain/ praise the manager much more often than the A’s.

The dismissing of Howe and Macha (guys who were sent off following seasons in which they won the division was done without much complaint.

Most teams (fair or not) would be calling for Geren’s head last year (especially considering the team had 8 straight winning seasons that was broken on his watch.

This team has mysteriously imploded

since the trades of Blanton and Harden. It is like the players, while not openly admitting it, are not trying. That is Geren’s job to motivate. I do not have facts to back up my feelings, but it just seems that the team is just going through the motions. Offensively this is just a different team than the first three months of the season. My gut feeling is the team is not behind Geren and are performing in a passive aggressive manner just to set this guy up for failure. Call me paranoid, but that is my assessment. It is all too strange on how things have transpired since the trades.

by pedoman on Aug 3, 2008 12:52 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I think if only Geren would motivate the team

(this probably requires some form of slapping with a fish, or fining players for making outs, or screaming at them in the dugout), this team would be within 2 games of the wild card.

I would actually support that type of thing at this point in the season

because it would make for some entertaining news stories. When Leyland and his ilk cuss out all the players, it’s good fun. I think if Geren had slapped Eveland with a fish after last night’s start it would have been pretty awesome as far as entertainment.

The A's colors are green and gold.

Should we just start calling "Options to AAA" "being smacked with a fish"?

Or is there a voting process that has to happen first?

It has to be done carefully, because

you can only smack someone with a fish for three years – but you can smack them as many times as you want throughout each year.

I don't buy it

Carlos Gonzalez busts his tail to first on an infield grounder in a game the A’s are losing by ten runs. Mark Ellis recovering from a shoulder injury dives to snare a liner that looked like a sure single. Jack Cust dives to catch a sinking liner headed for the corner. A team that’s going through the motions doesn’t put out this kind of effort. They’re losing but they’re still playing hard.

Root for the Giants? Not even if they're playing al-Qaeda!

I agree - when your team isn't hitting

it always looks like no one is playing hard. In fact, it’s just that no one is having the opportunity to do anything other than run to 1B or trot around 1B waiting for the ball to be caught. Or walk back to the dugout muttering “I really think that was 1/16” outside.”

Oh, and another thing,

I think the reason the players are going after Geren is that they don’t like all the nepotism surrounding him and Billy, how Geren has been given a free pass, and the players can’t show their irritation at Billy for throwing in the towel because, as we all know, Billy will launch those players out of there and never be seen again. Now, there is some paranoid thought in these statements.

Stupid sentence
A good manager gets his players to excel above what they are capable off.

If the player is not capable of something there is nothing a manager can do. If the player does perform something then clearly they were capable of it.

You might as well have said “Give 110%.”
