Coming Out
Alright, it's unfortunately that time of year again. I'm watching our beloved A's getting spanked by the Red Sox and given their less than lofty record post-All Star break, I'm getting the idea that it is time to root for someone else for 2008. Let's be honest, all of us baseball fans have secret crushes on other teams. It's like having a biological impulse that evolved over the course of our fandom to stay interested in baseball in any given year, because we love the sport. I've seen some similar blogs last year when the A's were, if not mathematically, at least psychologically, out of the race. I'd say that they are currently there and it's that time again to admit your secret baseball team crush.
So, I'll start.
Though they are going nowhere and thus there is no reason to get on their bandwagon this year,I have to admit to having a secret crush on the Seattle Mariners. It even started before my Sonoma County-based family started vacationing in the Pacific Northwest or beer-fueled college trips to Seattle, both of which led to several M's home games at the Kingdome. I liked that they were on the West Coast,, and not in So. Cal. and their heartbreakingly bad record and lack of success, thus threat to the A's made me kind of like them. Plus, Iused to be able to get their games later in the evening on my radio. But, I was a Northern California boy who wanted to follow a Northern California team, and became an A's fan based on their general success and spent several years battling the majority Giants fans in the Sonoma County area. But, because the M's were in the same general region of the country, I liked them too. Plus those tridents as their symbol was cool. I like Tampa Bay this year, despite the lame name change, because like the Mariners then (and now unfortunately), they have been historically bad.
In the National League, of course I couldn't stoop to the Giants. I liked the Cubs partially, at least, since my Dad does. When I finally made it to Wrigley last year, I was actually the fourth generation in a straight line of males (meaning we all had the same last name) to visit Wrigley Field. My family lived in northern Missouri and my grandparents lived for a brief while in Chicago (my Dad was on a business trip and saw them play the Giants).
So, who's your secret baseball team crush? It's high time to come out of the closet. Hey, at least we don't have to reveal them as often as, say, Pittsburgh Pirates fans. Disclaimer-- I am not responsible for other members who mock secret Giants fans.

I'm rooting for the Marlins
because I played in Little League with John Baker for many years, and we went to the same schools. Good to see him get an opportunity. I also think that franchise should be disbanded…
The A's colors are green and gold.
I'll pull for the Rays.
It’s nice to see the beasts in the east get their just rewards. I also watch the Dodgers, but just because I love to listen to Vin Scully. On the other hand, I’ll tune in the Angels game on occasion just to get my blood pressure up. It also helps me to get through my day with a piss poor attitude.

I'll root for the Rays to win the AL this year, and would be extatic if they do
but my not-so-secret-second team is the Cubs, by virtue of…well..

Whoever plays the Red Sox, Angels and Yankees
Finished with my woman 'cause she couldn't help me with my mind...
Yeah
I should have made that clear too. In addition to the Giants, I’ll end up going for anyone that is not Boston, the Yankees or the Angels. Also, of course I have the River Cats to root for here in Sacto. At least they are good every year and are affiliated with the A’s.
Given who's left, I guess I'm aligning with the Brewers
My mom’s family is from Wisconsin (although they’re geographically closer to Minneapolis than Milwaukee), I like Sabathia, and if they do well it might keep Jemile Weeks from getting bored in rehab…

I root for the Padres and Mariners
I went to UW and currently live in Portland, the AAA affliate for the Padres.
Fuck the rest of 'em
I root for the A’s.

And by "Fuck the rest of 'em"
I would especially mean the Yankees and Red Sox.
I am actually rooting for the Angels (although I feel unclean writing those words) against the Yankees this weekend because the Angels are in the playoffs no matter what so it doesn’t really matter, while the Yankees still have an excellent chance to finish out of it. I want either the Sox or the Yankees (both, if possible, but preferably the Yankees if I can only choose one) to miss the playoffs. So I guess that makes me a Rays fan, but it’s not because I’m a Rays fan.
I'm rooting very hard for the Rays
They’re the future. Get used to seeing them up there. As good as they are now, their farm system is still full of crazy good prospects. They’ve got pitchers to match the A’s farm system.
I wait for the post-season and ride the "unlikelies"
I liked Colorado’s run last year. I got excited by their stretch run, and coming from two runs down to beat the Padres and Hoffman in the last game.
Whoever puts together a “run” (as long it’s not a team that’s been “bought”, like the More-Angels or the Rent Sox, Yawn-kees, etc.) is my team…with lukewarm endorsements.
Boy, the A’s right now…phew..it’s like meeting an old friend, and you wonder “Is he just back from the gym or something…ugh!!” so you step back three or four feet to give your nose a break, keep talking, etc. This person’s your friend, and will continue to be so, but you have to save yourself from personal discomfort, when appropriate.

I actively root against the Cubs....
because I know when they finally win a WS their fans are going to come out of the woodwork just like Red Sox freakin’ Nation has since they won. Yes, in general Chicago fans are a bit more tolerable to begin with than Boston fans…but I rue the day when Cubs hats are to be seen everywhere and every person who has been stranded in O’Hare claims to love the Cubs.
I know what you mean, and I've told my friends that
Still, I gotta root for the Cubs since my friends are activly trying to make me a Cubs fan.

the Mets where my childhood and first baseball love
so I still have a soft spot for them.
I generally root against the Sux, Angels and Yankees.
In secret I have two other teams
my NL team is the Marlins because i live like 30 minutes their AA team the Carolina MudCats. It was great going to games when D Willis, Miguel Cabrera (man he could hit even back then) and the other young marlins from a few years ago were there and went on to help win the WS. Also the Major league team has come a few times for exbi. games, i went to the game when Pudge was with the Marlins. Also since my wife is from there area she remembers when Jason Kendell played there aswell. As an A’s fan though I will suggest and player the A’s should look at its a guy named Chip Ambers. He was with the Marlins for a while and has been traded a time or two and im to lazy to look up where he is now but i remember him being good but kept getting blocked or not getting a chance.
In the AL I have like the Rays. But it agains comes from the fact that i live about 35-45 minutes from the AAA team this time the Durham Bulls. I was really excited when they drafted Josh Hamilton due to him being a local product and all.
Of the two though I enjoy the MudCats games better due to (a lot) better parking, cheaper tickets, and better/cheaper food. But both Five County Statium (Marlins) and Durham Bulls Athletic Park (DBAP) are great stadiums.
The Dodgers
I don’t like them but with Torre and Manny aboard, a Dodgers championship hacks off the Giants, Red Sox, Yankees, and Angels. Can’t do much better than that.
Root for the Giants? Not even if they're playing al-Qaeda!
