Game 109: A's vs. Red Sox (cont.)
"Disaster Zone Dana" strikes again! He gave up walks, liners and homers en route to 8 runs in 2 IP. DiNardo is coming on to relieve him in the bottom of the 3rd.
Emil Brown hit a 2-run homer in the 1st, but that's it for the A's offense.
Sox up 8-2.

ugly game

Ugly season
As much fun as the first half was, the second half has a chance to offset it. Not just the losing, the lack of increased hope for 2009.

Great win for the Red Sox.
This is a great weekend for the Red Sox to get back in the race by sweeping the A’s.
Apparently they were in a hitting slump until today

Well, they have not been playing that well until this weekend.
The A’s are going to help a lot of teams in the next two months.
Next time The A's come to Anaheim
I will go to games that Eveland and Braden are not pitching in.
Smith is OK but I will pass on that as well.
Duke or Gallagher and I will go or even someone from AAA.
Otherwise I am not going to go and watch sub-standard garbage in action. I feel sorry for the A’s fans that go to home games because we deserve better than what is being presented to us at the moment.
I hate unproductive outs and the A's are producing them at record production
Yup, the fact that Eveland is pitching today made it a lot easier for me to back away from the $65-for-standing-room tix

Off-topic serious Eric Chavez question:
I realize I’m setting up too many jokes to count here, but…
has it been announced when he’s projected to be healthy again? Like, is it impossible that he could be healthy and even be the A’s opening day 1b in ‘09? Is there a small chance of that?
"The painting was a gift, Todd. I'm taking it with me." -Wedding Crashers
No timetable that I am aware of.
Although, he should be able to DH next season at least, you would think…
I'm dreaming of...
an ‘09 with Big Frank at DH, Chavy at first and Cust in left, so that we have three guys who might hit 20 homers.

I don’t think there’s much hope this season but you never know. They should try him at 1st at least
I hate unproductive outs and the A's are producing them at record production
My sense is it's not impossible
Chavez has a tendency to state the worst. Or at least he is forthcoming about it when things don’t look good, as opposed to putting a good face on it like most others do.
He said it doesn’t look good, so we all assumed the worst. If someone else said what Eric said, I’d assume his career is over and he just hasn’t faced up to it yet. With Eric, I think it’s exactly like he says: It looks bad and his career might be over, but we don’t actually know that for sure yet.

Mazzaro as well - apparently called up to Sacto today
I expect quite a nice little competition for starting spots next spring. Losers get to work on their consistency in AAA. Eveland shouldn’t be sent down now, because the A’s need to preserve his last option for next year. But send him to the pen, let Meyer have a shot.

And chest-deep in horrible, rotten year.
Doesn’t mean he won’t recover, but this certainly will lower the projections for him going forward.

and I think he’s in the same position Faust described about Eveland – he’s not doing well, and you want to send him down, but you might as well save the option year and bite the bullet on him for one more month.

Sorry, I only do jokes!
But yeah, you’re right. And that was for just one inning. ESPN link. Inexperience aside, though, I would rather have Chavvy in the lineup than Daric Barton at this point. He may have a jacked up shoulder, but he has six gold gloves and has yet to dive into a wading pool. He and Barton are both 6’ 0”, so no advantage for Barton there. Finally, Chavez is earning $11,500,000 and Barton is earning $390,000.
I'm not sure this holds for him, though.
I think he has all three options left, doesn’t he? Or at least two? If we’re still needing to send him down in 2010 or 2011, he’s probably just a bust anyway.

Random question
Is there any pic/screencap of the ridiculous face Staplehead made after hitting his first home run?
That thing was classic.
When Beane said you don't rebuild halfway,
did he mean that you do dismantle enough of your team to go into free-fall, but not enough to have a potentially successful group of players on the field?

Comment from ESPN Board (They may be not far off the mark on this)
It is amazing that the longer guys are in our organization their hitting gets worse and worse. Look at Barton, Crosby, Chavez, Grieve. Now guys who have come through our system Dye, Damon, Durham, Kendall,
Thats why I am not getting too high on the Cargone’s and Sweeneys because this organization will turn them into .240 hitters for sure eventually.
I hate unproductive outs and the A's are producing them at record production
Tejada and Giambi were fine all the way. Chavez too till the injuries.
Crosby was never good except during that month in 2005. Grieve was fine until he left. Barton didn’t suddenly absorb the hitting philosophy over the winter. They can’t be serious about Kendall.

I'm not sure who else I like who's under 70.
Jon Miller was pretty good, but I haven’t heard him in years.

He hasn't heard anyone in years either.
Prince: This bores me. Is anyone up for a game of basketball?
So do we have to watch 100% suck for the rest of the season?
Prince: This bores me. Is anyone up for a game of basketball?
No. We win one out of five games.

BTW that means we should win tomorrow.
2-14 since the break, unless we make a comeback tonight.

I'll be crying in my beer for the rest of the season while my wife and kid eat $6 nachos
talkin’ ‘bout “Are we winning?” Shouldn’t have spread my tix throughout the second half.
Should have bunched them in the first three months

All we need is two 20 win months.
Just combine August 1999 (19-10), and September 2000 (22-7), adjust for the number of games and voila! A 93 win year.

Just think....
next season is absolutely the last one you have to watch with Crosby on the team. I think I will have a little countdown string with knots on it for each day…..

Is this thing over?

Mark Ellis: sent down from Heaven to rob Evil of hits and hand out rainbows
The Blanton trade
One reason I didn’t like the deal is that Blanton, alone among the A’s starters, was almost certain to improve. His value was likely to be higher in the offseason than it was a few weeks ago.
If the guys we got in the trade pan out, all is forgiven.
I have to say, though, I love that trade
Cardenas has a chance to be the jewel of both deals (Harden/Blanton).
