DLD 8.15.08 Wake Up! A's "might" stay in Oakland

Mayor Ron Dellums sees some renewed hope for the A's chances of staying in Oakland.

Two weeks after A's owner Lew Wolff said he wasn't sure if he would succeed in building a proposed 32,000-seat stadium in Fremont, Dellums told the Tribune he's prepared to do anything "within reason" to keep the A's in town.

Article in today's Tribune  Dellums hopes A's stay in Oakland.

Long way to go, but as Skigurl was saying yesterday, Robert Bob is back in Oakland, and he has been very supportive of keeping the A's here. Now this is the kind of rumor I really like.  Stay A's!

It would be nice if they did stay in OAK.

Has there been any talk (in the past) of where a possible sight would be within OAK? I do not live out there and I do not know OAK at all other than the area around the stadium.

Raccoons are pretty nasty

I had some in my apartment a few weeks ago. Fortunately the Ferocious Brazilian Cat and I both slept through their incursion and only found out by the disgusting mess they made of the cat’s water dish.

Really

I’d love the A’s to stay in Oakland. I’d love them to play in Fremont. I don’t care as long as they are in the Bay Area.

But seriously, there is nothing in that article that gives me any reason to believe that is more than Ron Dellums spouting crap. He has struck me as a garbage politician of the worst kind.

I read this as him trying to appear interested. Way too little, way too late.

I look at the sites on the OAFC page and it is interesting to note that the best one was remvoed from the list by the mayor of Oakland, the second best one was removed by the Port of Oakland, the third best one was basically the first Lew Wolff proposal (in area not specifically the parking lot) which went no where. The fourth one?

Clicking on a link from that link, I see

how messed up Americans are, nicely encapsulated in the following AP story about new guidelines for Cincinnati priests: “The Archdiocese of Cincinnati has issued a detailed list of inappropriate behaviors for priests, saying they should not kiss, tickle or wrestle children. The archdiocese’s Decree on Child Protection also prohibits bear hugs, lap-sitting and piggyback rides. But it says priests may still shake children’s hands, pat them on the back and give high-fives.”

Bobb is only back for 6 months

He’s not in Oakland under any official capacity. His firm is consulting the city on its budget crisis. Whether or not he chooses to stay beyond that is anyone’s guess. Rumor is he’s looking to run for mayor of Richmond, VA. He spent nearly a decade there and is looking to build a small ballpark and athletic complex for a TBD minor league team. Next year Bobb could run for mayor of Richmond, the office of which is being vacated by long-time friend Douglas Wilder.

And I think it's unfortunate that she looks at it this year.

This season, I can understand a bias against the west coast since most of the teams aren’t very good. The problem is if you go back to years when this wasn’t the case, you will see the same thing.

It’s easy to say that we, or the Giants or Padres should get less coverage this year, while not going back just a short time to when we were winning a bunch, yet still getting the coveted “53 minutes past the hour” highlight spot on BBTN.

I just wonder sometimes about cause and effect -

ESPN would argue they show the Yankees and Red Sox because that’s where the ratings are. You could also argue that if the media made more effort to highlight all 30 teams, and to promote the notion of “baseball” and “close races” and “seeing players you didn’t see just last week” as being inherently exciting, then viewer interest → ratings might be a lot higher elsewhere.

I was thinking the same thing

If the A’s get no coverage then there is no interest which justifies not having any coverage.

by Lafayette Scotsman on Aug 15, 2008 2:50 PM PDT up reply actions

I've thought the same about hockey

ESPN states that nobody watches hockey, so they limit news coverage (which primarily consists of fight lowlights, so it’s perpetuating archaic stereotypes that further alienates potential fans), people are less exposed to the sport, lose interest = nobody watches hockey. Now NHL games can be seen on VS., the station formerly know as “OLN”

by SwisherThresher on Aug 15, 2008 3:11 PM PDT up reply actions

and they really limited their coverage

once the NHL decided to not have their games on ESPN. Around the same time, ESPN/ABC/satan bought interest in Arena Football, and what sport suddenly became a lot more “relevant”? Arena football.

since you call everyone you disagree with a socialist, why should I expect it to be true?

And I’m not conceding it is, since (a) as nevermoor points out, it no longer is (if it ever was) and therefore ain’t germane, (b) from what I can tell, he was never a member of the Socialist party, © Democratic Socialism, especially in its American variant, with which he was “aligned” (if you believe the shaky sources that pop up in google), sure as shit ain’t the purebred variety that you expect people to take away by simply using the single “s” word.

What’s more, even if it is true, and Ron wears bright-red boxers, STFW? The way you formulated it, it’s not a germane discussion of the way his ideology impacts public policy as it touches on the issue of the stadium, but an ad hominem attack on his trustworthiness that would be exactly the same if instead of “socialist” you said “Democrat,” “Republican,” “black,” “white,” or “mayonnaise-eating.”

by monkeyball on Aug 16, 2008 8:20 PM PDT up reply actions

I disagree with George W. Bush...

but, I don’t call him a socialist.

Whether you concede it or not does not make it any less true. Just because he didn’t run for the mayor of Oakland as a Socialist Party member doesn’t mean he’s not currently a socialist. Because he is… ask him, he’ll tell you. And, the DSA is, indeed, the purebred variety. Dellums was, in fact, an early member of the DSOC, founded by Michael Harrington, and one of the two merged entities that now make up the DSA, which is the principal American affiliate of the Socialist International. Basically, you can’t be any more socialist than that.

Perhaps my formulation was inartful in that it did not explicitly state that his ideology would never allow him to do anything (let alone within reason) to help keep the A’s in Oakland, but I thought that was sufficiently implied so that I didn’t have to spell it out. In fact, I’m quite confident that it will be an impediment, as he will concede no public money of any sort and, no doubt, insist on as many forms of taxation as he can conceive. As for his “trustworthiness,” I’ll leave that conclusion to his constituents, some of whom seem to have already drawn their own conclusions.

Less than half the flagged comments (about 40%) have resulted in “strikes” so clearly moderators are not being lemmings or a “good old boys network” (“if you think it’s a strike then I will too”). These things work themselves out pretty well, from what I’ve seen.

All Foolsh did was point out past political positions which might be relevant to the A’s in their quest for a stadium. No big deal.

Well I guess that sort of sarcasm is not helpful

Seriously, I am offended by the red baiting. It’s overt and divisive in my opinion and should be a strike.

The threat that has been issued by the A’s ownership to move the team out of our City is political in nature, so politics enters the discussion. That is fine in my opinion. What I think goes against AN’s standards is the use of language by posters that is meant to marginalize the views of others in a way that sort of precludes any dialogue. It is bullying. This stuff has been the source of a great deal of suffering by people with unpopular view points in this country. The show trial and assasinations of Sacco and Vanzetti, black lists, loyalty oaths, etc. Foolshgame, you should have learned all this shit in public school. I did.

Ron Dellums is not a socialist in any way I can point to. He is not pushing a socialist agenda in Oakland. I wish he would and I think that might be the best thing for Oakland. But that really has nothing to do with a ballpark. No City in California is in a position to pony up money for a ballpark. Fremont isn’t. Oakland isn’t. Wolff could build a ballpark in Oakland if he wanted to. He has the money.

Foolshgame, I honestly think you have been out of line with this stuff and I think you should just agree to not do it anymore. And Nico, I really don’t get your position on this.

I missed that one. Anyway, my point is that the repetition may warrant a “strike” even if the first one didn’t (which is probably why I didn’t vote for a “strike” back on July 17th). So if this one gets a “strike” or “warning” but the 7/17 comment didn’t, it doesn’t mean this one is necessarily “worse” – just that when a comment is borderline, pretty soon enough is enough even to moderators who weren’t compelled the first time.

you’ll see that repetition can be CGV-worthy when it’s negative, inflammatory, etc. (see example with Chavez).

“True” doesn’t have anything to do with it, as posting “The A’s offense is pathetic!!!!” 12 times in a game thread would be a CGV, while also being true.

As for “giving in” and issuing a strike/warning, well…you probably know by now how that played out…

I like Cindi. A. She never pretends to know more than she does. B. She has unbridled enthusiasm for her "Hotties," and isn't afraid to show it. -IM4Oakgal

within reason?

so Mr. Dellums, do tell, what is “within reason”? here’s a multiple choice answer sheet:

a) lease extension on the same concrete house-that-Davis-built.
b) new ballpark

thanks,

If Fremont fails, I think the A's stay in Oakland

or move to Sacramento, or San Jose (sure, everyone says the territorial rights will hold, which is the same kind of vote of confidence managers get a week before they’re fired).

Simply put, there’s nowhere good for a baseball team to move.
