Open Thread: Game 120 - A's vs. Rays (Cont.)
"It was the best of times, it was the blurst of times"?! you stupid monkey!
-- Montgomery Burns, Last Exit to SpringField
Two batters into this contest, the A's had a 2-0 lead, courtesy of a Mark Ellis triple and Carlos Gonzalez home run. And the next inning, they piled on, adding two more, after the Rays had answered to tie it up. That's right! 4 whole runs in 2 innings!
But the game went on, and the A's pitching got worse. Gallagher walked four and threw more than 90 pitches in 4 innings of work, and Dan Meyer, who followed, walked three in less than an inning, letting the Rays tie it up at 4-4.
Meanwhile, at bat, the A's love leaving the bases loaded. Today's goat? Emil Brown. And Alan Embree is pulling a "mini-Ziggy", going 1 1/3 scoreless innings. On to the bottom of the sixth! Go A's!

Why is everyone blaming Emil today. I blame Thomas. He was the one up with
less than 2 outs, when an out should score a run. Emil has 2 outs and needed a hit. Thomas has a OPS of .571 in August, and only a 760 for the year. I know he has had a better career, but Frank has been basically terrible since returning from the DL.

Ziggy at 39
I’m not following the A’s all that closely these days …and I hate to jinx things, but … has Ziggy had an outing this year where he allowed a runner even to get into scoring position with less than 2 outs? I’m sure he has, but it seems like he doesn’t even come close to giving up runs …
by solotar on Aug 14, 2008 3:19 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Yes, he has a number of times
More recently, they’ve come in a ‘leadoff batter reaches base, next batter sacrifices him to second’ situation.

The debate is all in whether or not it works enough to be worth it.

isn't that argument a bit circular?
It works when it worked?
You could say the same about swinging away – it works when the guy hits a HR.
by MobiusKlein on Aug 14, 2008 3:28 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
But when that guy is somebody like Crosby who is going to make an out anyway
It’s not necessarily a bad idea. Especially in a tie game in the 8th inning.
by thejd44 on Aug 14, 2008 3:27 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I know you're being facetious, but even with Crosby being really good at making outs
He’s “only” making an out 70% of the time.
Sac bunting makes an out pretty much 100% of the time.
I’ll take the 30% chance that he gets a hit.

that to bunt when you have a runner on first with no/one out is bad, but to bunt with a runner on second with no outs is good, provided you have someone who can lay the bunt down?

Frank’s numbers with the A’s this year before today: .284/.382/.448
by thejd44 on Aug 14, 2008 4:00 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
So, he hasn't been with the A's all year, and his OPS since returning from the DL , is just
over .500. I am not comparing the 2, I am just tired of people who think Brown is the only problem with this crappy team, and without Brown they would be in 1st place. Frank has been horrible lately.

Seriously, just stop.
He’s played in about 10 games since sitting out for 2 months. He didn’t have a rehab assignment.
Nobody has, as far as I can tell, has even once said the A’s are a first place team without Brown. Show me where somebody did that.
Frank Thomas taking 50 PA to get heated up after a 2-month layoff is not even the same effing ballpark as Emil Brown having a long, shitty career.

Um, another inexplicable move by Geren
He should’ve used Patterson to run for Frank, so Davis can play the outfield if the A’s don’t win it here. Doesn’t make much sense to waste Davis’ defensive ability when he’s only marginally faster than Patterson.
by thejd44 on Aug 14, 2008 3:57 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Disagree, take out Frank AND Cust which is what you are advocating =
a Gerenesque decision.
by 33SwisherSweet on Aug 14, 2008 3:58 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
You don't HAVE to use Davis as a replacement for Cust now
You should just leave it open as a possibility without forfeiting the DH.
Not only that, but the reason you keep them in the game is because you’re planning to play 12 innings. I’m not sure it’s a good idea to manage a game that way.

Chance of scoring a run
starting from man on first, 2 out is pretty low, no matter who is running.
Chance of Davis coming up as the DH in the 11th when you would really, really like to see Frank is pretty high.
by Soaker on Aug 14, 2008 4:03 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'd say that the majority of the time it had no effect whatsoever
Although improving the outfield defensve significantly, a byproduct of many of the pinch running situations, has probably saved a few runs. In general, I don’t have much issue with Geren’s pinch running. Just a few qualms here and there.

That doesn't make any damn sense
Something working or not working is not the way you judge whether it’s a good move.
Geren could make a lineup of all pitchers, and by chance they might win a game. That doesn’t mean having all pitchers out there was a good idea.
