Open Thread: Game 120 - A's vs. Rays

Tampa Bay Rays at Oakland Athletics, Aug 14, 2008 12:35 PM PDT

The combination of the A's clearly having fallen out of contention, and their usual unfair share of injuries has led us to a point where we're as excited about seeing the new guys Cliff Pennington and Eric Patterson play as we are about the potential outcome of the game. Given 14 straight games at 4 runs or less, and a ridiculously lopsided W-L record since the All-Star Break, it's quite clear that it's the "game within the game" we're trying to get excited about now. (Oh yeah, and Ziggy.)

So... wait. (Looks down and scans lineup)

No Pennington. No Patterson. (Scans again)

Well, at least we've still got Carlos Gonzalez and a venerable veteran lineup that's come up HUGE for the A's in games past. Right?

Pitcher Sean Gallagher and his 1-1 record, with a 4.26 ERA, hopes to take advantage of the California sunshine and get his teammates' bats warmed up. He'll be opposed by James Shields, sporting a 10-7 record and 3.65 ERA. You might recall Shields last faced the A's on July 23rd, when he won 4-3 after pitching into the 9th inning. The A's definitely remember, and hopefully, they've been planning some revenge.

Go A's

why do we continute to play Hannahan?

I HATE watching him. I rarely see good at bats, he is very mediocre in the field, and I don’t see any upside. He is unbearable.

by DC Athletics on Aug 14, 2008 12:26 PM PDT reply actions

i think...

he’s much better than average defensively according to the defensive stats experts. he’s a horrible offensive player.

by stm72 on Aug 14, 2008 12:33 PM PDT up reply actions

ok

i’ll accept that. however, i still don’t like watching him play in the field. he’s no chavvy and i got spoiled by that at third. when he plays first i just hang my head in shame that he’s over there.

According to Chris Dial's numbers...

Hannahan was a -2.3 runs in the field as of August 7th. I honestly don’t know enough his numbers to vouch for the accuracy either way, though. Can be found here.

For what it’s worth, they also have Cust at exactly 0.0 runs. Cust does look ugly out in the field, but I do get the sense that he generally gets the job done and isn’t completely terrible.

by rageon on Aug 14, 2008 12:46 PM PDT up reply actions

I've seen some numbers that say he's been good defensively

But I see him not making plenty of plays that good 3Bs make. And he might have the worst 3B arm in baseball. Barton has saved quite a few errors on terrible throws.

WTF...

If this was truly rebuilding mode we’d see guys like Patterson and Pennington in there as opposed to the RBI Machine and Hannahan

by 33SwisherSweet on Aug 14, 2008 12:29 PM PDT up reply actions

You guys need to realize, and look at the schedule. The A's are going to be playing in like

20 of the next 21 days. There is going to be enough time to see how crappy Patterson, and Pennington are. They won’t play every game.

by theblackpearl on Aug 14, 2008 12:31 PM PDT up reply actions

Want to make a friendly wager that the do NOT play in the majority of those games?

Look, I don’t care if they are crappy – I’d rather know if they are crappy sooner rather than later. Two things I do know are that Emil and Hanahan are crappy and that this season is already over. What better chance are you going to have to play your rookies than in a meaningless season?

by 33SwisherSweet on Aug 14, 2008 12:36 PM PDT up reply actions

The A's next day off is Sept 15th, and then Sept 25th. 2 more off days the rest of

the season. I am juist saying, they can’t play every game. Geren might play the veterans more, because he doesn’t like the way P and P look already. I have no clue, but one game is no indicator.

by theblackpearl on Aug 14, 2008 12:38 PM PDT up reply actions

Patterson played in one game. He is young and this is his shot in the show.

Do you really think he cares about how tired he is? Seriously, do you?

Pennington, same thing. Do you really think they are tired? If it were you with your shot to prove yourself, your shot to live your dream by playing in the Show, do you really think you’d care about rest?

Beyond that, Geren isn’t thinking about rest. Trust me. The dude doesn’t really think.

Eric Patterson

Alright, so this comment has nothing to do with what I think of his future: Where should he be playing right now?

He’s not going to get regular playing time over Ellis. He shouldn’t get regular playing time over Cust and/or Thomas (I consider both of those guys to be apart of 2009, even though Thomas is a FA). So do you try him in right field? Can he handle third? I agree that Patterson should be getting at bats, despite thinking he totally sucks. But I’m not sure where those at bats should come at this point.

Given the state of 3B right now...

…I think we’re in “what the hell, give it a shot” territory.

I'd rather see Patterson than Hannahan

But if the guy just can’t handle the position at all, it could do more harm than good. I’d hope the A’s are at least considering that option.
