Open Thread: Game 119 - A's vs. Rays

Tampa Bay Rays at Oakland Athletics, Aug 13, 2008 7:05 PM PDT

The A's try for the elusive two game winning streak tonight as Justin Duchscherer takes the mound against the Rays' Andy Sonnanstine. The A's won a close game last night; as their light-hitting offense was supplemented by some pretty incredible bullpen work, capped by our own Ziggy's second save of the season.

In case you missed the press release today:

The Oakland A's today placed outfielder Ryan Sweeney on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained right thumb and recalled infielder/outfielder Eric Patterson from Triple-A Sacramento.

It would be nice to see Duke turn it around from his last few starts and finish the season strong.

LET'S GO OAKLAND!

Awesome! I really think the Sweeney injury

is a blessing in disguise. The A’s need to see Patterson at the big league level and are now forced to do what they should have done all along (play Patterson here), while Sweeney has been playing on a wobbly ankle and with a pinky that needs surgery – rest is not the worst thing in the world for him right now.

hunh?

I mean, I certainly don’t know definitively that he shouldn’t, but, c;mon, he’s had an inner-ear infection, a head injury (that still could have been a concussion), at least as many aches and pains as Sweeney, and looked horrible when he has played.

Word from the A's is that Chavy's surgery went great

and that the A’s – and Chavez – feel “very optimistic” that he will be ready to go at 3B next spring. Who knows, but wow wouldn’t that be nice?

I could ask a few more questions about this vaunted lineup but I just have to ask why someone who is not worth a ** full of cold snow would be htting ahead of someone who is hitting 66 points higher

If I were making out the lineup,

I’d have Patterson leadoff – if he’s going to be in there, that’s where he belongs. Ellis, against a righty and especially the way he’s been looking lately, shouldn’t really be in the top 5 spots anyway. He has looked really grim recently; not happy or loose at all.

Maybe they feel putting him in the leadoff so quickly put too much pressure on him

watching the game he was some what wild. He walked three in a row to load the bases while

he still had a no hitter intact. But nothing really wrong that i saw other than he was at 92 pitches and was only mildly dominate. Also his spot in the batting order was due up in the 6th so the cubs PH for him

by A'sfaninNC on Aug 13, 2008 7:23 PM PDT up reply actions

I watched the game. I thought he looked very uncomfortable even before the first pitch.

Looked twitchy/nervous. Wild. Velocity a bit down. Only 2 K’s. 5 walks. 5IP.

But don’t even suggest to a Cubs fan that something MIGHT be wrong. They will go apeshit on you.

This is what I love/ hate about this site. My Posting deflected the blame from the coach

to the players who failed to advance the runner. While I do believe that the ball was hit too hard to send a guy from third, the major problem is the inability for the other guys to move Suzuki up.

Instead of acknowledging that I am in somewhat agreement with your point (that the problem was not all on the coach) you make a smart aleck response about him texting me.

Barton's season in a nutshell

I know he was a great prospect, but I am not so sure after this year. Does he need another year in AAA? I remember at the beginning of the year, people were suggesting that he should be the DH—that would’ve sucked.

by butler19 on Aug 13, 2008 9:19 PM PDT reply actions

Besides the approach problems,

Barton’s bat looks slower this year (not that you’d know from that AB). Mostly, I have a feeling that attitude is an issue – work ethic/coachability leading to bad results leading to pressing leading to worse results.

Somebody owes Dan Johnson an apology

The A’s gave up on Johnson and he hit for a higher average than Barton and actually hit some home runs from the first base position. I find it hard to believe the A’s will hand the first base position next season to someone who might end the season under .200 and doesn’t have much power.

by SA on Aug 13, 2008 9:21 PM PDT reply actions

The word from today's surgery is that it went great

and the A’s are legitimately hopeful Chavez will be able to play 3B next year. Which would be great because it would be easier to add a 1Bman than to add a 3Bman. Giambi comes to mind.
