8/13/08 Olympic Thread: SPOILERS!

WARNING: WE ARE LIVE BLOGGING THE OLYMPICS! THIS WILL CONTAIN SPOILERS!

Star-divide

Wednesday Edit: NBC coverage begins at 8 ET/7 CT. Swimming starts at 10 ET/9 CT. Micahel Phelps competes in the 200m IM semis.

Other events include: women's road cycling (trials), men's 3m synchronized springboard diving final, Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh play their final preliminary women’s beach volleyball match against Norway, women's 200m fly, men's 200m breast, men's 100m free, women's 4x200m free relay, and more gymnastics.

Michael Phelps. Michael Phelps. Michael Phelps. Michael Phelps. Michael Phelps. Michael Phelps. Michael Phelps. Michael Phelps. Michael Phelps.

Did anyone see the video yesterday where he said he eats close to 10,000 calories a day?

We've got swimming just finishing up. Gymnastics now. The USA dudes won bronze yesterday, the NBC talking heads think the ladies for USA should do better than that.

To the action...

PS - VISA just aired a "Congrats on 10, Michael" commercial.

I'm interested, too

but as a former fencer I have to say that fencing may be the least telegenic sport imaginable. Even live, it’s so fast that it’s incredibly difficult to tell what just happened. And trying to make sense of it on a small screen, from a side view, is nearly impossible.

If anything’s watchable, it would be epee—at least you don’t need to worry about right-of-way.

I only got interested because we did a story about one of the competitors

(who lost in the round of 16) but even with my extremely limited knowledge of fencing I can see where that would be true.

by ohtobe21likehuston on Aug 12, 2008 8:34 PM PDT up reply actions

Well yeah there are some shitty sports that have been added (yet Squash remains

on the outside for some unknown reason). Plus you get the fact that professionals compete – Basketball, Tennis, Football et al, which goes against the original ideals of the games.

I’ve nothing against swimming, I swam competitively as a youngster and still do recreationally today, but the focus it gets in the Olympics is just crazy.

by OldhamA on Aug 12, 2008 8:44 PM PDT up reply actions

Yes, let's go back to the Coubertin's

Olympics, when only rich men, and trust fund babies could win medals. When anyone who had to work for a living could only dream of a medal. When women were banned from a huge number of events for “their own safety”.

Also, what the “original” ideals? Coubertin’s ideals? Why are they “original”? Were Coubertin’s ideals on amateurism based on the ideals of the Ancient Olympics?

Question

How is baseball on the chopping block, yet ping-pong remains untouched?

I apologize to any ping-pong/table tennis enthusiasts.

by JLaff on Aug 13, 2008 9:14 AM PDT reply actions

Economics

It costs quite a lot to build baseball (and softball) venues, especially in places where baseball isn’t played very much (ie, Athens). Table tennis can be set up in any gymnasium, etc, and the venue would be useful for other events, like, say, rhythmic gymnastics.

"However, at Elias, I think they keep track of the amount of sunflower seeds spit in a dugout each night." - Brad Ziegler, 8/7/08

by doctorK on Aug 13, 2008 9:36 AM PDT up reply actions

"Useful"

Not a word I would use w/r/t rhythmic gymnastics.

The reason table tennis should be tossed is because it’s totally uncompetitive. You might as well just add 4 gold medals to the Chinese total and skip the actual event. It’s as though they made American football an Olympic sport—it’s essentially only played seriously in one country.

looks like China is done....

a single makes it 7-3. still only one out. Maybe I should switch back to the US-Cuba game.

GOO TEAM!!!

Is cuba the vistor???

If the game isn’t over, I’ll switch to that game. But its the bottom on the 12, and I’ll finish watching the taiwanese win first.

the reason china will lose the game today

9 Jack Custs on their team. Mr. Swing at everything. Nice!!!! USA!!!!!!

Cuba scores

Same situation with the other game with that runner starting off at second. Sac bunt then a single.

It might not be a bad idea for something like this so games don’t go on and on.

double play

okay, I think in the other game it was just a bad camara angle. watching the camara made it look like one run scored, when it was acutally three.

bummer

well, its still the round robin tournment. The USA hasn’t played China, Canada, or Japan yet.

Phelps news

Michael Phelps won his seventh gold medal of the Beijing Olympics on Saturday, edging Milorad Cavic by a blink of the eye, .01 of second in the 100m butterfly on Saturday at the Water Cube.

Phelps, who trailed at the first wall but made up ground on his turn, still looked to be behind Cavic in the final meters but got to the wall first in 50.58 to Cavic’s 50.59.

"trailed" is an understatement

He was in 7th place (of 8 swimmers) at the wall.

THAT WAS AMAZING.

Seeing it three hours later makes it no less amazing than reading about it. Holy crap.

And the USA just beat Canada, 5-4. That ups their record to 2-2 so far.
