Taj's Tuesday Trade Target: Neil Walker
The A's need a 3rd baseman. Badly. Preferably a 3rd baseman with power. The Pirates just traded for rookie 3rd baseman and AN favorite Andy LaRoche and are in negotiations to sign another highly-regarded 3rd baseman (Pedro Alvarez) out of this year's draft. Those moves have effectively blocked the Bucs' former top 3rd base prospect Neil Walker for the next decade.
The story on walker: Pittsburgh native and big-shot high schooler taken 11th overall by the Bucs in the 2004 draft. Drafted as a catcher but moved to 3rd base at the beginning of last season. Struggled initially at the hot corner but is now seen as an adequate defender. Always about a year younger that his competition but probably moved up through the system too quickly. Is a switch hitter with talent from both sides of the plate. Hasn't hit a ton of homers so far in his career, but has hit a ton of doubles and is still only 22 and is in AAA. Has stayed healthy his entire career.
My completely unscientific take on Walker is that he could be the 3rd base equivalent of Nick Swisher. He switch hits pretty well with some power and is apparently a fairly confident/brash guy. He even kind of looks like Swisher. Speaking more to the bottom line, Walker's stock is probably at an all time low. He's obviously been passed up on the depth chart by Andy LaRoche and he's struggling big time right now at Triple-A Indianapolis, hitting just .234/.269/.414 for an underwhelming OPS of .683. He's got 14 homers but a frightening 22-85 BB-K mark.
Those stats are certainly concerning, however I believe that Walker is more like the guy who hit 13 homers, 30 doubles, walked over 50 times and OPS-ed .824 last season as a 21-year old in Double-A than he is the struggling, has-been top prospect. For one, Walker's BABIP so far this season is a very unlucky .253, more than 50 points lower than his previous career low. Secondly, his struggles this season have primarily come at his home park, where he is OPSing a woeful .578 with only 15 extra base-hits; on the road he is at a much-more respectable mark of .768 with 28 extra-base hits in roughly the same amount of at-bats. Thirdly, Walker is actually hitting more line drives (21% of balls in play, according to minorleaguesplits.com) and is hitting less groundballs and less flyballs than he is since 2005, which suggests that he's making good contact but just not finding holes. Fourthy, take a look at his batted-ball charts. He hits a quarter of all balls in the air to centerfield and half of his homers have gone over the centierfield fence, suggesting he's got prodigious raw power. Lastly, he's also only 22 while competing against guys a year or two older than him and some of whom who have major league experience.
So while there's no doubt that Walker is having a down year, I think there is enough evidence to show that he isn't nearly as bad as his numbers indicate, and is actually a pretty good hitter. He's also got enough of a track record to show that he generally knows what he's doing. So, if I'm right, then why would the Pirates think about trading him? Two reasons:
1 - The Obvious: even if the Bucs had faith in Walker, there would be no room to play him. The LaRoche brothers have the monopoly on the corner infield positions for the next several years, they have better prospects to fill the outfield corners, he couldn't hack it at catcher and even if all those guys don't work out, the Bucs will likely have Pedro Alvarez chasing him out of the organization within a year or two.
2 - The Roster Crunch: Unless I'm mistaken (which is always possible) Walker will need to be added to the Bucs' 40-man roster this off-season lest be made available in the Rule V draft (since he is currently not on the 40-man but was drafted in 2004). The Bucs are in a transition period and might not want to expend a roster spot on a talented, but ultimately expendable player such as Walker, especially considering that they will probably need the roster spot in order to offer Alvarez a major league contract as an incentive for him to sign. It's for these reasons that I think Walker will be made available this winter.
So then, the question is: what could the A's trade to get Walker this winter. Obviously, Gio, Cahill and Anderson are way too much and have already been given the "off limits" tab by Beane & Forst, according to other execs. Since the Bucs have several promising, high-upside center field and corner outfielders, I don't think they would insist on Cargon or Swooney either. They really just need more pitching (who doesn't) and middle-infield help. They seem to be overhauling their entire system and would probably go for bulk rather insist on premium talent. So I'm thinking that any combination of the following players could work for the Bucs:
Braden, Meyer, Eveland, Kilby, Pennington, Petit, Sellers, Horton, Bailey, Fernandez, Lansford, Banwart, Italiano, Hertzler, Hodsdon, Richard
Basically, I'm thinking it would take two non-premium but fairly valuable pieces to land Walker, maybe a starting pitcher coupled with a middle infielder. It wouldn't be a huge price to pay, but it would be significant. I think it would be worth it though. At 22, Walker still has lots of projectability left in his bat and he's already shown that he can handle advanced pitching. As a switch hitter that sprays line drives to all fields he could become a fixture in the middle of a lineup. I'm thinking he could be moved up to the majors starting next season. I'm guessing he would need a few years to reach his full potential, but I don't think that it's out of the question that he could debut next season with a .750 OPS, 12-15 homers and 20+ doubles. That's probably not going to get the A's to the playoffs, but it would be a HUGE improvement over Hannahan and the upside in Walker's bat is tremendous.
I already know what you are all thinking: Walker sucks. If we're gonna trade prospects I'd rather go after Glaus or Beltre or someone else that can help immediately. I also like Kouzmanoff and Ian Stewart and Allen Craig more than Walker.
I like Stewart and Kouz too, but I know for a fact that their current teams like them as well and will demand premium prospects in return. Craig is intriguing, but is 2 years older than Walker and playing in a lower level. I realize that Walker isn't going to be very popular around here since he won't help the big league team immediately. However, I think it's important to note that as a hitter and player he's still developing and won't be a finished product for probably another two years or so. That's precisely when Beane envisions the A's window of contention to seriously begin. Trading for a 3B that could help immediately but will be gone by 2010 doesn't jive with the rest of what Beane is doing. And don't forget about Eric Chavez. If some miracle occurs, Eric could conceivably return to the hot corner next season. But with Walker being only 22, it wouldn't be difficult to just play him in AAA for further seasoning with the intention of him being the 3rd baseman of the future. Overall, Walker has the chance to be an impact-type hitter at a position of need for the team for many years to come. Since I think he could be obtained affordably in terms of talent, I think he should be pursued.

Very interesting
In the end, it all comes down to price. If they want Lansford, Italiano, and Banwart, that’s too much. But if they want Meyer, Sellers, and Richard, it’s an obvious move.

If they can really get Walker for any two of the guys Taj listed I'd go for that.
If it were Italiano and Lansford or Bailey, I’d want them to throw something else into the deal—Jamie Romack?

nice piece taj
i follow the pirates a little bit (family is from pittsburgh) and i agree about him probably being rushed. he was supposed to be the next big thing for them, and as a local boy, i feel like he may need a change of scenery. the pressure on him has been enormous.
another great handling of a player by the littlefield regime…

Walker is definitely a good example of combing
the minors for guys who are either better than their current stats or better than their opportunity with current organization. Maybe we could offer Matt Morris? I’d look at Braden, Patterson, Pennington as “major league ready” players we could spare that might interest Pittsburgh. Though secretly I want to keep Patterson as a super-utility player because every scout seems to think he can hit, I’ve seen how he can run, and the A’s don’t have enough of either.

He’s interesting, and would make a good acquisition at the right price. Question being what is the right price. Their 40 man is full of junk, and I don’t think it would be an issue for them to let him have another go at AAA. Would definitely be unhappy if the A’s gave up either Pennington or Eveland(?) for him, but 2 of any of the rest would be okay.

Since prospect for prospect deals tend to not happen much, here's a thought
What about trying to trade Crosby to the PIrates for Jack Wilson, Walker, and a bit of cash to cover Wilson’s contract for 2009 + a 2010 buyout?
I think the PIrates would love to get rid of Wilson, they’d get a younger, better (offensively, barely), shortstop, and the only real price is a 3B they don’t need. Maybe toss in somebody to help even up the deal if they’re putting in some cash.
I don’t particularly want Jack Wilson, but when defense is included (I’m assuming Wilson is still pretty damn good at it), he’s really not much of a downgrade from Crosby. And it’s only for one year.

The salary-relief angle is an interesting one.
We could even offer to take Freddy Sanchez and his $5million+ for 2009 off their hands. I do like the thought of Jack Wilson better than Sanchez though, and Billy has shown that he’s willing to just eat some salary to get a better prospect in a deal (Kotsay to Brave for Devine, Richmond).

Jack Wilson is better than Crosby by a significant margin
So you’re suggesting trading a player (not a prospect, with no upside and no long-term contract control) for a better player, a prospect, and cash to cover the salary difference.
You can’t be serious.

I don't think everybody would agree Wilson is better by a significant margin
Because defense is undervalued, Wilson makes a lot more money, and he’s 3 or 4 years older. When you listen to people around the league, Crosby is still talked about as some big-time player just waiting to break out. Does Neal Huntington believe that? I have no idea, but just because you and I know Crosby is a turd doesn’t mean he has no value around the league.

I'm not terribly interested in irrelevent distinctions
like “no MLB experience” ... they were minor leaguers with very little or no MLB experience. They count.
I counted Manon-Denham, which according to MLB.com’s transactions was it’s own trade. I don’t know if it’s right or not—but I figure I have to trust them as the authority on the subject.

There is a huuuuuge distinction between prospects and organizational filler
Charles Thomas for JD Closser was helping both teams fill a need in AAA. Teams make these trades all the time. Teams don’t trade two top prospects straight up for each other.

Do you really not agree that prospect for prospect deals don't happen much?
They seem quite rare to me, and Garza for Young is the closest thing I’ve seen in this thread, and even that one had some established ML players. It’s hard to think of a single example of a trade that the A’s might want to do, which would be pitching prospect(s) for hitting prospect. All the deals mentioned in this thread are quite marginal.
The A's colors are green and gold.
by mikeA on Aug 12, 2008 9:53 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
They can't happen that much -- based on the criteria he laid out ...
there’s going to be little point to trading lower level prospects, because you don’t know what your needs will be by the time they arrive—and there simply aren’t that many “real prospects” who are close to contributing in the bigs, who have essentially no service time, who more or less match up on talent and who fit both teams’ positional needs.
Sure, it doesn’t happen THAT much, but not so much that I would think there’s any reason to conclude that there’s any reason it wouldn’t happen if there was actually a good match.

If you have Orlando Cepeda and Willie McCovey, you can now just make one a DH rather than trading one or moving Willie to LF.

When the Twins shipped Matt Garza to the Tampa Bay Rays for outfielder Delmon Young I think Young only had minimal major league experience. Just like Braden only has minimal major league experience. So a Branden for Walker trade would be similar, just on a lower level.

What about Cleveland?
Seems like they have a logjam, with Jhonny Peralta already at SS and the following prospects ready:
Wes Hodges (3B, turning 24 in Sept)
Beau Mills (3B, maybe OF, turning 22 this week)
Matt LaPorta (3B, maybe 1B or OF or DH?, now 23.5)
Josh Rodriguez (SS, turning 24 in Dec)
The first three on that list have “masher” potential. Meanwhile, if any team should be interested in Street it’s Cleveland, plus having lost Sabathia they should be interested in Eveland, Mazzaro, Simmons, etc. Seems like Oakland and Cleveland are natural trade partners.

Add Andy Marte to that list.
Marte would probably be the most “available” guy in the Indians organization. With Blake gone, Hodges seems to be the Indians’ 3rd baseman of the future, leaving Marte expendable. However, Marte has absolutely bombed in the majors so far in his career and hasn’t really hit since 2005. He wouldn’t be my first choice, but he’d be the guy Shapiro would most likely want to give up.
LaPorta is a stud that’s likely off-limits and Mills is being shifted to 1st base, I believe, which kind of lowers his value to the A’s.
I think a Street for Marte + one or two other B-level prospects could happen though.

I’d do Street for Cabrera straight up.
If you don’t believe Mills can really play 3B, then Nick Weglarz looks better as a OF/DH than Mills does based on 2008 numbers and age.
Has Marte been good since Schuerholz traded him? And steroid testing? Not that that’s conclusive proof of anything of course.

Rosenthal says that while the Dodgers are under pressure to re-sign Manny Ramirez, there may be more pressure to sign Casey Blake after this season. rather than trading a prospect
i’d prefer they use eveland as trade bait, other teams need lefty pitching and A’s have alot of it
i’d use him as trade bait for a 3b/ss
with pitt need for pitching they could add eveland to their group of duke/gozellany/snell etc plus the haul of pitching they got from the deadline deals

except
maholm is their best pitcher…and gorzo and snell both forgot how to pitch this year

I still like Eveland
He just hit the wall everyone was predicting.
I don’t really understand why everyone is counting him out of our 2009 plans.

I really like this deal and I have hope for it
Though this would all blow up if the Pirates believe Alvarez is their 1B of the future after Adam LaRoche has finished holding the spot warm and they feel Walker is young enough to be insurance for Andy. But I doubt they are willing to give up on him as a 3B this early because his value as a hitter there is too valuable. He sorta reminds me of Miguel Cabrera.

Wow! Joe Gaetti for Luke Hughes! If true, that would be awesome!
OK not awesome but nifty.

Well if you look at Gaetti's MILB page, it has him in New Britain already, but
Hughes’ s page still has him at Rochester.

So if the A's really did trade Gaetti, that means you can trade a minor leaguer on the DL, because
the Rivercats site says he was placed on the DL on 08/08.
by theblackpearl on Aug 12, 2008 3:44 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Just looked and Joe Gaetti isn't on the Rivercats roster.
from StarTribune this article says:
The Twins also acquired Joe Gaetti, son of former third baseman Gary Gaetti, from Oakland. Joe Gaetti, a 26-year-old outfielder, was batting .263 with 14 home runs and 33 RBI for Class AAA Sacramento.
It just doesn’t list who the A’s received yet.

It's also on the AthleticsScout site in the H-Rod article.
It also does not say who we received. Is Hughes on the 40 man roster?

looks like forst was in a giving mood
i guess they just gave away gaetti.
should be a quiet august, so much for trading embree/street
unless ellis clears waivers or a team is desperate for brown
maybe beane can find another jack hannahan type…blocked player, stuck in minors for awhile, looking for a chance…in some minor prospect trade

I'd actually like Luke Hughes as that blocked player.

How is Hughes blocked?
Is Buscher a long-term answer for the Twins at 3B? Or do Punto or Mike Lamb somehow get in the way of his progression to the bigs?
by Qwerty75 on Aug 13, 2008 3:54 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, if there is a team as desperate for a new third baseman as the A's...
it’s the Twins. No way they would give up a guy who is OPS-ing over .900 in AAA for Joe Gaetti of all people!

I'm still stunned at how well the Twins are playing
Granted, their rotation has been pretty good even if few fans can name the starters – yet how “dominant” is Perkins, Blackburn, Slowey, Liriano (who until recently was Livan Hernandez)? And this is a team that has been without Cuddyer for a long stretch, forced to play guys like Jason Kubel, Nick Punto, and Mike Everett every day – hardly the foundation for a plus offense.
Only Mauer, Morneau, and Nathan really scare you and yet they’re 14 games over .500 and tied for first place. Amazing and impressive.

I can't find Joe Gaetti on the Twins or A's major or Minor league rosters now
I saw him listed as an OF for New Britain just a couple days ago now he isn’t listed anywhere.
Did the A’s and then the Twin’s simple release him?

Allen Craig
Two words about Craig … Cal product!! At AA Springfield for the Cardinals, who have a depth of talent at third base. He has heart-of-the-order power, currently hitting .303 with 21 homeruns. Figures to be ready for the big leagues by midway through ‘09. The Cards need pitching, and Justin Duchscherer’s stock may never be higher than this off-season.
