Adam Dunn to D'Backs

For three prospects, including pitcher Dallas Buck.

http://www.ktar.com/sports/?nid=22&sid=930425

Dunn currently has 120 k's this season. The Diamondbacks will now have three of the top five strikeout leaders in the National League. Mark Reynolds is second with 147 and Chris Young is third with 122."

For more K's they were looking into Sammy Sosa and Rob Deer as well...

Clearly the Manny trade is making them nervous.

W/ Orlando Hudson going down, any chance at Ellis landing in Arizona?

Doesn't this mean Arizona gets the draft picks

when Dunn leaves for FA? Meaning they could potentially get back, in minor league talent, about what they had to give up?

Except they have to (probably) pay Dunn's remaining salary

The minor leaguer they gave up is 23 and has an ERA over 5.00 in high A.

I mean, I know that minor league numbers aren’t great, but he’s old for his league AND has bad numbers.

I’m thinking one (or both) of the PTBNL’s are going to be pretty solid guys

I was speaking in general terms

That a prospect has more value than the unknown draft pick. I know someone did some work on this. I believe I read about it on The Book’s blog.

I'd think this depends a lot on how confident you are at your drafting skills vis a vis

your minor league evaluation skills. A’s for example are probably better at the latter.

Except Dunn is an All-Star caliber player who can really hit the damn ball. Mark Reynolds is ok, and Chris Young totally sucks at offense. Hard to compare the three since, aside from the Ks, all three are very, very different players. And offensively, Dunn is easily the best of the three.

we recently made strikeouts -.5 instead of -1. it really shows you who the truly elite players are. last year, david dejesus scored more points than ryan howard when strikeouts were a value of -1.

I have admittedly horrible reasons for not wanting the A's

to sign Dunn. A lineup with Cust and Dunn would be a heck of a lot better than the garbage we’re throwing out there now, but it would also be so deadly dull. Strikeout, walk, strikeout, strikeout, walk, HR!!!!, walk, strikeout, strikeout, strikeout, HR!!!!!...

That's why you let the .300/.350/.400 all stars (Sweeney/Zook) hit 1 and 2

then Cust and Dunn have someone on base when they decide a HR would be fun.

by nevermoor on Aug 11, 2008 2:20 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's why I put the "admittedly horrible reason" part

I’d rather have Dunn hit a HR than have Patterson hit a triple and be stranded – yet watching a guy like Patterson leg out a triple is electric in a way that even a HR isn’t.

To me, though, it comes down to wanting a little bit of the variety and the “unknown” – wondering about a possible double-steal, or whether all three guys can score on a one-hopper to the wall, or drawing the 3Bman in, taking off the bunt and slapping it down the left field line, is just more interesting than figuring you’re about to see a walk, a strikeout, or a HR to get the runs you’re going to get.

I’m not talking rational “W/L” stuff here – I’m just talking about the experience of watching the game as a fan.

Rule change might be a good idea here

Right now speed-based strategies are exciting, but dumb. How do you make them smart? Change the rules so that speed is more effective. Perhaps a limit on pickoff throws (>1 in an at-bat counts as a ball? Ban slide-step pitching deliveries?) would accomplish this.

Ooh I know - make the balk rule more complicated

and less logical?

Or how about this simple solution: Make the bases 60 feet apart, like softball. “Frank Thomas is running…no throw!”

Seriously, though, you can’t really limit pickoff throws or the runner can practically get a running start – probably the best you could hope to do, without compromising the integrity of the game (e.g., bases suddenly 88 feet apart) is to increase park dimensions so that speed naturally became more valuable and power less so.

by Nico on Aug 11, 2008 4:11 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yep ...

bigger parks more time to run
more time to run speed more valuable, relative to power
speed more valuable more fast players
more fast players + more time to run much more running

BUT

bigger parks cheaper seats
cheaper seats less profits
less profits == non-starter

BUT

As media rights become a larger and larger portion of overall revenue, revenue from ticket sales will become less important than revenue from media rights and that might change …

Can't argue with that because you admit it's pretty silly

And at least I know you wouldn’t complain about it being a bad move. But I guess I’m the only one who finds working the count and drawing a walk in a 10-pitch at bat exciting. It’s like a chess game to me. There’s a strategy to it that is unique because, while strategic, it’s also reactionary (especially for the hitter).

Ellis for Dunn

I am not too familiar with the post deadline trades. Could a deal of Ellis for Dunn be worked out? I don’t know if other prospects have to be thrown in, but AZ needs a second basemen and the A’s need someone who can hit and prevent me from commiting suicide when we get the bases loaded with no outs.

He has a player option - he can declare free agency

if he wants to. (The player option is for 11.5 million for 2009.) If a team, like the A’s, is willing to offer a 4 year deal at around what he’s making now it should appeal to him since he is an injury risk, as well as theoretically a risk to decline, as he gets older.

If he stays but gets hurt for STL in 2009, or has a lousy year for them in 2009, he’ll wish he declared free agency. If I were Glaus, I’d certainly declare and make STL bid with others to offer him a 3-4 year deal.

A 4-year deal????

At around what he’s making now?? (So, 4/46?)

For a 32-year-old with old player skills, a shaky health history, and limited and declining defensive abilities?

Glaus’s offense is nice enough, but really, it’s not all that impressive. Granted, when you’ve been watching the A’s lineup night after futile night he might look like the reincarnation of God Almighty, but that relative value shouldn’t blind you to the fact that he’s a very good but not great hitter.

I like your idea of combining the DH and backup 3B roles; it fits the A’s needs nicely. But the deal you suggest has every chance of adding to Beane’s record of crappy big-dollar deals – with the exception (from some of them) that this deal wouldn’t look good even at the time it’s signed.

by Faust on Aug 11, 2008 6:45 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't know - his career OPS is .858

and this year’s is .857 – if you figure that’s about where he can produce, it looks pretty good to me. He also leads the NL in fielding pct among 3Bmen, though that doesn’t speak to range, just lack of E’s.

But I figure if he DHs, he should be able to stay healthy and if he plays 3B then he has saved you at that position because it means Chavy couldn’t – and the A’s options there are nil and ich.

3 years, 12 million? I’d do it – but that probably explains why I’m not the GM.

.858 is indeed "pretty good"

But that’s all it is, a very large distant from “great”, and not worth $12 million per, not even taking into consideration the severe unlikelihood that he’ll be OPSing .858 over the course of the deal.

If you can talk him into a 2-year deal, then I’m on board. I don’t see it happening.

I’m talking off the top of my head, always dangerous. If devo or PT or someone takes the time to calc the MORP and prove me wrong, I’ll stand corrected (and surprised).

by Faust on Aug 11, 2008 8:22 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I doubt you're wrong

I just look at a lineup with Glaus #4 and can suddenly see the team being successful – that’s worth a fair amount to me. Same is true of Burrell; I just like the insurance at 3B until I see “the next 3Bman” in Oakland.

Based on MORP ...

Troy Glaus would be worth ~$27.7m this year. Of course, actual salaries are substantially lower because they factor in risk, multi-year security, etc.

BP also thinks his defense is very good. If you lower it to being merely average, his MORP drops $3.5m.

I ran a quick Marcel and it does not see his production falling off much over the next few years. It does, however, see his playing time falling off fairly significantly.

Glaus is a good player and could be a very good buy on a short-ish, 2-3 year contract. How good depends, largely, on what you think of his defense and how good it will be going forward - as such, if you see him as a DH, his marginal value pretty much goes away, as this season would only be worth about $16.5m - which in a healthy season, when you are likely seeing max level production for this point in his career, is not a great return on the risk of a multi-year contract.

Thanks for that

Interesting, and better than I expected, even at the bottom end.

I'm not really conviced that being coveted by Beane

equates to a being a successful hitter. Durazo & Keilty were the last 2 that come to mind…yawn

Durazo had a legitimately awesome season for us

And then he got hurt.

Dunn is a better player

But he’s not $10 million better. If you’re choosing between the two, it’s probably smarter to stick with Cust based on cost alone. Plus, I think Cust might actually be a better defensive player. Maybe. Not that it’s saying much.

I haven't looked at the numbers ...

... but the handful of times I’ve seen Dunn field, it’s been comedic. Seriously: he looks like Will Ferrell flailing around in his underwear in the outfield.

Cust genuinely tries, and at least has a general idea of what an outfielder is supposed to do.

That said, I still want Beane to sign Dunn. He could even play LF … occasionally.

If we sign him, I think he's the DH and Cust is in the OF

Esp. because Cust seems to hit better when he plays the field.

Cust might be better more

“valuable” than Dunn in terms of marginal wins per dollar, but at some point, you’re going to have to take into account absolute wins, instead of relative wins, when constructing your roster.

Nope ... not really ...

in order to trade him to us, he would have to pass through waivers at least to us, meaning 18 other teams (as of 5:13 pm, 8/11) would have to pass on him first.

curiosity

mildly off the original topic, but not enough to really warrant its own fanpost. When the red sox claimed giles from san diego, and giles blocked a trade, why didn’t san diego just give up on trying to trade him and let him go through waivers to save the money?

Jeremy was safe. He jumped over the tag.

I believe he had a no-trade clause

Which basically means if you didn’t major in waiver rules in college, you have absolutely no chance at knowing what the hell happens if a player has a NTC.

wouldn't matter

A major in waiver rules would be as stale as a ’70s Computer Science degree by the time you actually found a job.
