Carlos Lee is out: Can we waiver wire deal Brown?
http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20080810&content_id=3286166&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb
The Astros have ruled out signing Bonds, but...."A lack of interest in Bonds doesn't mean the Astros aren't looking for outside help. They can still make a waiver wire deal between now and Aug. 31, and in the next few days, Wade and manager Cecil Cooper will discuss their options."
Emil Brown seems like he could very well make it through waivers to be traded, and perhaps we could get a few prospects out of him. I doubt the Astros would deal JR Towles or anything, but a couple two star prospects like Mitch Einertson and Eli Iorg doesn't sound unreasonable. Thoughts?

My thoughts are,
“Why would they want to replace their really good hitting OFer with a bad hitter who also fields badly?” Because trading prospects for Emil Brown will help them in the future?
Sadly, Emil Brown is one of those players who “hurts you for right now” and “hurts you for later”. Why he hasn’t been released, I don’t know, but why he hasn’t been traded I have a pretty good idea: He sucks.

Lee is out 6-8 weeks. If the Astros want Brown I'm sure they can work something out.
Emil was a Type B last year, but the lowest ranking one, so we may give up a sandwich if we trade him.

Now there's a fair deal:
Emil Brown for a sandwich. Not pastrami, though – pastrami’s really good. Maybe roast beef.

Sandwich Picks require Arbitration
and I can only imagine the posts on AN if the A’s offered him arbitration and he accepted.
Emil Brown’s season would get him probably a 2.5 million dollar salary next year.
Do A’s fans really want that?
by Bud Light on Aug 10, 2008 9:00 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Based on last year, I think Brown would accept
Shannon Stewart had a much better year last year than Brown is having this year, and he declined. He ended up settling for a minor league deal (which meant the A’s got nothing in return).
I do have a hard time believing Brown would get $2.5 million in arbitration though. He might ask for that, but I don’t see him getting it.

We could waive him, and the Astros could claim him,
and we could let him go away for nothing. That’s a win-win.

mitch einertson
played ball with him when i was younger. great athlete but mentally a little slow. probably causing his progression to go slower than usual. he will probably be a 4th OF type with speed and a quick bat

I'm sure Brown has already been waived
Teams typically put all their guys on waivers at once after the deadline, and we all know that Street has been on waivers.
I can’t imagine that Beane would’ve pulled Brown back had a team claimed him, so my guess is that nobody claimed him because, as Nico said, he sucks.
The only real hope to dump him before the end of the year is for a contender to have a few outfielder injuries. They get desperate, Beane can maybe unload Brown for next to nothing.

Even a contender who is desperate for an OFer
can probably find someone with an OBP over .300. Fact is, most contending teams’ 4th OFer is a better solution than Emil Brown is.

Only For Players That Also Cleared Waivers
Major-leaguers on both sides of a post-waiver trading deadline trade have to have cleared waivers. Frankly, I have no idea about the rules this time of year for players in AAA (e..g, the River Cats) who are on their team’s 40-man roster. For example, the A’s just designated Brooks Conrad… did they need to do this to be able to trade him, or can they deal someone directly off their 40-man roster?

or non 40-man MiLers ...
if they are on the 40-man they have to clear waivers …

Who wouldn't
want an RBI Machine? LOL, Nvm he’s not that anymore.
Also, the Astros arent going anywhere this year so I don’t see the point in them trading for anyone besides prospects or a big star.

Wait what?
Emil Brown for prospects? Do they play baseball? Are they alive?
Honestly, I think the A’s would let Brown walk for a couple bags of sunflower seeds.

if brown cleared waivers or was claimed
i think there would be some mention of it
also the new rules mention type B free agents do not require offering arbitration anymore.
if ellis, embree, brown, etc are type b’s i guess keep them, but i’d like to see prospects get a chance
by Asfan4ever723 on Aug 10, 2008 10:39 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Huh?
Where did you get that Type Bs don’t require arbitration?
That’s not correct. There’s no way the A’s would have offered to Piazza and Stewart last year if the offer hadn’t been needed for (putative) compensation.

I saw that too, and Asfan may be right
He’s getting it from Rosenthal, generally a pretty reliable source:
The changing trade marketThis was certainly news to me – I’d never heard this, and this long after the CBA it’s quite surprising to learn something new about it that has this level of significance. But it doesn’t seem likely Rosenthal would make such an explicit point of it if he didn’t actually know the situation. Maybe it’s a provision that only kicks in after the 2008 season? In any case, if you’d care to take the time to look into it further, you’d do us all a service.
The trade market continues to be stalled by the reluctance of teams to part with future draft picks in trades of potential free agents — a relatively new development in a sport in which salary dumps were once common.
Teams not only want to keep their draft picks, but also are unwilling to sacrifice the performance of their major-league club by trading solid contributors for fringe prospects.
“People are focused on those two aspects of it more than they’ve ever been,” one general manager says.
Even players who project as possible Type B free agents are considered more valuable than in the past, thanks to a change in the most recent labor agreement.
A team can now gain a sandwich pick between the first and second rounds for such a player without even offering him arbitration.
Case in point: Braves left-handed reliever Will Ohman. Though Ohman had trade value, the Braves did not receive an offer that amounted to the equivalent of a pick between the 31st and 45th selections overall.
Type A free agents must be offered arbitration to ensure draft-pick compensation.

Forst Said Rules Are Changing
I saw David Forst at Ken Korach’s charity poker tournament.. He mentioned that the compensation rules for this year aren’t the same as for last year. I believe he said that the changes were planned… not sure if the CBA prescribed them or just set up the framework for them to be changed.

Having seen Emil Brown play
I don’t know why anybody would ever want to give up anything for him. But the Astros, in a division with the Cards, Cubs and Brewers and a wild card that includes the Mets and Marlins, they traded away prospects for Randy Wolf when they were still teetering around .500 and 12.5 games back of the Cubbies.
If there’s anybody crazy enough to do something like that, it’s Houston.

Heavens...
We would have to pay Houston to take him…

Aside from the fact that Brown sucks, no one has mentioned
that the Astros are out of contention. They’re 12.5 back in their division and 8.5 back in the wild card. They would have to leap frog over the Marlins, Mets, Cardinals, and Brewers to get into the playoffs.
If Darin Erstad can’t get that jobe done, Emil Brown sure as hell can’t.

That didn't stop them from going out and getting Randy Wolf to help them "contend"
by mikev on Aug 11, 2008 9:55 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
The difference is, Wolf will help them contend two years from now
Whereas Brown will decline from his already established level of awful to be…dreadful?

Helping them contend because he's a FA after this season and nets them a draft pick?
Or because Houston might actually be dumb enough to give him an extension?
by mikev on Aug 11, 2008 10:14 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I don't think they'd be dumb to extend him if he's healthy
He’s an above-average pitcher – plus, dress him up in sheep’s clothing and he becomes more difficult to solve, as well as a lot sexier.

As Nico mentioned
Wolf is a more of a long term fix and he fills a hole that would otherwise be there next season. Carlos Lee is only out for 8 weeks. If they go out and get anyone to replace Erstad, it would be purely temporary and seeing as how they’re out of the race, there is no need for that.
