Open Thread: Game 117 - A's vs. Tigers (cont.)
Smith and Street (who was brought into the game in the 5th inning) coughed up 9 walks and 4 runs so far in a pretty embarrassing showing. The A's offense is predictably punchless, having already left the bases loaded once today with nothing to show for it...
Devine just thankfully got the A's out of a 6th inning mess.
A's up to bat, top of the 7th, hopelessly down 4-0.

That was a very good play by Granderson. I'm tipping my cap...

He will, but only when he changes his approach
not to start his swing until he sees whether the pitch is breaking or not (and then hits the fastball away hard to left-center). He has the bat speed to do it, but right now he starts to swing at breaking pitches before recognizing that they’re breaking pitches, and that’s a recipe for consistent failure.

Devine looks good enough again that I would
put him into the closer role and move Ziggy back to high leverage “crisis inning and the next” duty. My feeling is that’s where those two belong long-term and this is a good time to gauge whether Devine can handle closing for 2009.

me three
Devine is looking good again and that makes Street expendable or at least shut down for a week or two and see if that will help
Blevins and Street for LOOGY/medium leverage
I do think Street will bounce back eventually and be a good 7th/8th inning option, more so than Casilla.

+1000000
I hate unproductive outs and the A's are producing them at record production
I'd do Ziggy for a 2 IP save once per series. At least we won't get swept.
Use the regular configuration with Street, Embree, Devine, Casilla, Blevins any way you want in the other games.

It was asked earlier about Barton getting closer and maybe under the .200 BA mark but
how far behind him will Hannahan be before he gets there as well
What'd he do, make contact? A foul tip for strike three?

Winning at a pace of one-game per week, A’s are on course to win perhaps 7 more games this season.

RE: Nico, Waddell et al. bullpen discussion above
Ziegler closing next year is a bad idea. Eventually he is going to stop pitching like God and the fact he is merely mortal against left-handed hitters (.257 BAA this year in Triple-A) will mean he is not a good long-term option at closer. His ceiling is as an elite setup man, lethal against righties and double-play ground ball specialist.
Count me among the few who think Street is still an above average major league closer going forward in 2009 and beyond. He is having the worst stretch of his career (by far), but he has an excellent track record. I wouldn’t dump him for pennies on the dollar because he’s doing his best impression of post-Pujols Brad Lidge in Houston.
Were Quisenberry and Tekulve better vs lefties than Ziggy?

I think Ziegler can keep it between .200 and .250 against lefties
He’s been unusually great so far with averages under .200 from both sides, but at some point something will go up.

The game log summary is better
“Polanco grounds one sharply to third and Hannahan goes to second for the force. Ellis looks for the double play, but decides to hold on to the ball in the face of a take out slide by Sardinha. That gives Raburn another at-bat and he uses it to rip a double to left field. Brown was backpedaling on the ball even though it was well over his head. Polanco was running on the pitch, so he comes around to score. Raburn advances to third on the throw, then comes in to score as well when Blevins tries to catch him at third and then airmails the ball into left field.”
And
“There were actually two errors on the run-scoring play in the eighth. Crosby got an error when his relay throw went wide of the plate. It wasn’t too bad of a throw, but the ball arrived at the same time and place as the runner and Suzuki couldn’t get his glove on it. The second is on Blevins poor throw to third. The A’s get something going here when Brown leads off with a double to left.”
