Untouchables?
Alright, in my view I think that everyone except Ziggy and Mark Ellis should be on the table, either now, though waivers, or after the season. Billy Beane should consider a lot of offers and make a lot of deals. Is there anyone else that any of you would consider untouchable?
Also, why are the River Cats so good and are reigning AAA champions and that A's are so bad this year? I don't understand that.

I don't know why you'd consider Ellis untouchable
Is it just because of his defense?
I’d keep Carlos Gonzalez over him if I had to pick.

Ziggy and Ellis are hardly untouchable...
Ellis is probably gone after this year. If Ziggy keeps putting up scoreless innings this year, there is no doubt in my mind that Beane will sell high. Cargo and Swooney are the closest thing to untouchable on this team.

enough with the selling high!
Who would we sell him for, a young, cheap pitching prospect with upside? That’s what he is?
by Jeremy Belvins on Aug 12, 2008 12:08 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Uh, no
He hasn’t allowed a run in forever. That means he has been as good as it is possible to be. There’s no upside from that.
I hate when people misuse the term “upside.” It means “has potential to play substantially better than he’s playing right now.” Ziegler does not, albeit for the most admirable of reasons, possess that trait.

just to clarify, PT is wrong in his first statement, right in his second
This statement of PT’s is correct:
Ziegler does not, albeit for the most admirable of reasons, possess [upside beyond what he’s already achieved].
This statement (as you point out) is wrong:
He hasn’t allowed a run in forever. That means he has been as good as it is possible to be.

I was trying to be amusing, but yeah.
He’s allowed inherited runners to score. He’s allowed people to reach base. It actually is possible to do even better, but then we’d be talking about someone completely perfect.

Oh, don't be so literal
No one expects Ziggy to maintain such a remarkable low ERA. Obviously he’s going to regress toward the mean — his mean — and I don’t think anyone expects his mean ERA to be almost zero. So, I was doing a quick-and-dirty projection based on the pretty reasonable expectation that his early success was more a matter of small sample size and not a perfect indicator of where is at this phase of his career. I used the term “upside” in the sense that he’s not expected to be in his prime, despite his early, anomalous success.
I just read your reply a moment ago, and so my subsequent reply is late in coming, but I found it so little irritating that I had to respond, however long after the fact.
You’re right, of course, in a rigid semantic interpretation, but I think it’s important to consider a little more context when trying to determine whether or not someone like Ziegler still posses upside. I mean, it was sloppy use of the word, fine, but obviously I never meant to say that Ziegler was going to have a better than zero ERA, so it shouldn’t take a great leap of logic to realize that I was using, however incorrectly, the term “upside” to refer to this early phase of his pitching career, which will be better reflected statistically after he’s accrued more innings pitched.
Maybe not. But either way, you don’t have to be so smug. Really, what kind of person starts a reply with “uh,no”?

My "untouchables" would be:
C. Gonzalez, Suzuki, Cunningham, Duchscherer, Gallagher, Gio, Cahill, Anderson, and Chris Carter. That’s the nucleus of the successful team going forward – for the rest I’d listen to offers and just be suitably picky.

No way would I trade Suzuki
He’s a better hitter than R. Sweeney, and outstanding catcher, and he’s the best overall catcher the A’s will have for a minimum of three years (Donaldson). I’d trade Rodriguez in a heartbeat if it could help solve 3B or SS for the next 6 years. Same with Barton, especially if it looked like Chavez had a future at 1B but not 3B. We need power at the corners.

He has the best stuff in the organization, and among the best in all of baseball. The A’s will have him for a minimum of nine years. My problem with that is that it would have indicated that Mark Langston

Looking at it another way, what makes Carter untouchable and Rodriguez expendable? Would the reverse have been true at the end of April?

I think some teams put more value on hard throwers than good pitchers
Not to say Rodriguez isn’t or won’t be a good pitcher, but he’s still having a lot of control problems and I’m not sure he really knows HOW to pitch more than “blow the fastball by everyone.” If he can develop better control and a couple other pitches that are at least average, pitches he can rely on when he needs, he’ll be devastating.
I like hard throwers too, but they have to be able to do more than just throw hard. Someone like Cahill is already showing how good he can be with a variety of pitches and he’s continuing to pitch well as he goes up the organizational ladder. Anderson’s in that mix as well.
I guess what makes Carter untouchable right now is the simple fact he’s got so much power. I’ve seen maybe half a dozen Ports games this year and he hasn’t done a thing in any of them while often looking slow with his swing, but most of those games came back in April and May when he was really struggling. I saw one a couple weeks ago where he got around on a ball well and hit a sharp liner as a result.
His numbers from June forward show he’s absolutely mashing and doing it while hitting for a good average as well. About a third of his hits in the last couple months have been for home runs, but add in his extra base hits and that number goes up to 57%, 43% singles. That’s impressive. I can live with the strikeouts when he’s hitting this well and I hope it carries over to higher levels.

What makes you think the June-July Carter is any more the real
Carter than the April-May Carter?
Would you consider Rodriguez untouchable if he had maintained his April performance into May at A+, and then pitched in Stockton like he has for the past two months. IOW pretend he’d never been at AA. Just as Carter’s never been at AA.

With people in the minors, I'm looking for signs of growth
Carter’s slow start could be for a variety of reasons but for a little more than half the season now he’s been tearing it up. I’d be more concerned if he started hot and went into the crapper instead of starting slow before improving. I’d move him to Midland but at this point it might be good to just let him finish the season in Stockton since it’s almost over, then kick off the 2009 season in Midland. If he starts out well there then he could even earn a promotion to Sacramento during the year, but if he has another slow start it’d be good to leave him in Midland to see if he heats up again as he gets used to the competition. If not for Doolittle, Carter’s probably already in Midland but I think the team wants to keep them spaced out the rest of the season.
With Rodriguez, it’s hard to say. I think he started out well because teams were overmatched. In the Texas League his control went away (as many walks as he has in Stockton in about half the innings, fewer strikeouts on average) along with allowing more hits. Whatever happened there, he got owned. Now back in Stockton he’s been better but still more up and down compared to the early start.
I’m not really sure what to make of Rodriguez until he gets more consistent and with them making the move to him in relief it may not be until next year that we start to see if he’s going back to figuring it out. At the least, it’s going to take another stint at AA before I’m ready to say if he’s getting it or not.

He's got terrific, uncontrollable movement on the fastball. It's not Kyle
Farnsworth or Joel Zumaya or Billy Koch. Also his change up is good when it works, but it only sometimes works and he can’t control it either. His breaking ball is a third pitch, but it also breaks even though (all together now), he can’t control that either.
He did have an excellent April before going to AA. So it’s not like he’s never put the pieces together somewhat.
Maybe “stuff” is the wrong word, if you’re going to make “command” part of the “stuff” equation. How about “upside”, ignoring the probability to reach that upside?

Upside? Yeah, I'd probably say he has the most in the organization.
But yes, control/command is definitely part of the mix to me. I want to see pitchers knowing where the ball’s going to go, pitchers who can make it do what they want when they want. In that sense, someone who doesn’t throw as hard but can actually pitch mean a little more to me.
It’s only two games but back in April I saw him mow down the Bakersfield hitters, then a few weeks ago get hit pretty consistently by many of the same players. His command was off more in the second game I saw as well.

I generally agree that performance trumps tools in the vast majority of
cases. I do not want to go back to the Todd Van Poppel, Tim Conroy philosophy. But I do believe that when those tools are off-the-charts good, like with Carter and Rodriguez, you place some value on their upside over and beyond their performance.

by WaddellCanseco on Aug 10, 2008 1:34 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
What I'd like to see with Rodriguez is the following:
Put him in the bullpen (as they just did, yesterday) and instruct him to throw only fastballs, and to try to throw every pitch down the middle. You figure that with his lack of command, a lot of those pitches will accidentally move to the various corners – which is great – and that he won’t walk guys or fall behind. And by pitching only 1 inning and not worrying about offspeed stuff, he can just focus on throwing a good fastball and will probably get his fastball by hitters sometimes even when it’s down the middle. Then you can go from there.

A GM isn’t doing his job if he’s not always willing to listen to an offer for any player.
by thejd44 on Aug 10, 2008 3:04 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
By "untouchable" I mean it's unlikely that you'll be offered what it would take to trade the person.
For example you could argue that you should trade Cahill for Evan Longoria. But that offer would never be made. Even a less ridiculous example like Cameron Maybin, it’s extremely unlikely that such an offer would ever be made. So any trade discussion is likely to be a waste of time. So if you Cahill’s “untouchable” other GMs won’t call you with silly proposals that you’d never accept.

Agreed
I guess I should’ve explained more in my post above yours: Untouchable means you won’t trade a guy. Now, hypothetically, what if the Yankees say “We want player X and we’ll give you ARod, Joba, Cano, and pay all of their salaries?” Granted, that’ll never happen ever. But untouchable means you would say “No, this guy is untouchable. Keep your players.” And that’s just bad general managing.
If we’re talking players who have a value to the A’s that probably can’t/wouldn’t be met through a realistic trade offer, I’d say Carlos Gonzalez is the only player who fits into the “probably no realistic deal” category.

Hard to say because of the position the A's are in
Generally speaking, I’d move any of those pitchers for a good, cost-controlled starting pitcher (somebody like Haren). I think those guys are the best value in the game. So even though any one of Cahill, Anderson, Gio, or H-Rod might end up better than a Haren-type (and I’m not suggesting trying to get him back, he’s just the first guy who popped into my head), I think having a youngish, successful, proven-healthy pitcher for the next 5 years or so is worth giving up a couple of those players.

I’d move R. Sweeney or Barton. Within a year, probably the same is true of Smith.

I agree
And I’d move Ziegler, too. I like Ziggy. I think he’s going to be a pretty good reliever for a while. But he’s still just a reliever. I actually think that a guy like him could end up being overvalued if he keeps up his ridiculous stretch of awesomeness.

I like how he capitalized 'A'
I think the ’ key is broken as well.

I thought he was just emphasizing
that there is no “A” in “moron”.

Untouchables
Cahill, Anderson, The Gons, Sweeney, Gallagher, and Bruce Willis. I think Gallagher and Sweeney are going to be real stars in this league which I don’t think is an opinion a lot of us share. As for everyone else, they can be moved in my book.

I'm just curious, when you say you think Sweeney will be a star,
do you see him hitting 25 HRs/year, or hitting .320, or stealing 25 bases? I don’t really see him doing any of those, but to be a “star” he’d have to do at least one. What do you see him doing?

All this irrational love for Sweeney makes me want to trade him.
And I’m not even the GM

He could steal 25 bases. He's unlikely to develop 25 home run power at this stage though.
Not sure about the average, I don’t know how his batting average on balls in play looks – it could be crazy, or sustainable.

Thing is, even if he steals 25 bases,
if he does it hitting .280 with 10 HRs he’s far from a star.

Does he have to be a star to be a good player here?

No, but he has to be a star
to make true the opinion that “Gallagher and Sweeney are going to be real stars in this league.”

Sweeney
I could see him hitting .320 with maybe 12-15 bombs, stellar D, and around 20 steals in a couple years. Maybe that’s not STAR material, but I think it qualifies as star material. Sort of a poor man’s Grady Sizemore before he exploded for all these homers this year.
