Faith In Billy
Before we go and get all in a tizzy over the Rich Harden trade, let's keep in mind that Billy Beane may not be done wheeling and dealing! Does shipping out Kenny Rogers and turning right around and acquiring Kevin Appier ring a bell from several seasons back? If you recall, people questioned the move then because the A's were in contention as well! There are still three weeks left before the trade deadline and something tells me we are far from done!
As much as I thought Rich Harden was amazing when healthy, who didn't? I also was constantly on pins and needles for whenever his next baffling injury would occur! Over his past two starts his dominating fastball had disappeared and now was clearly the time to move him. After another start or two we may have had him back on the DL and left with no takers. Clearly had Harden been healthy for the better part of his young career, Beane would not have parted with him! But being the Ace poker player he is, Beane felt it was time to fold 'em! I for one am in agreement, although I must admit there was nothing quite like Harden when he was on his game! It was thrilling indeed! We just didn't see enough of it!
I am one fan that wishes Rich the best of luck (and Chad as well), however if the A's and Cubs would have waited to near the deadline, there are too many things that could have happened to jeopardize the deal from both teams perspectives and it would not have happened. There simply were too many variables involved!
I think a more legitimate question at this point is did we get enough in return? And I believe the answer is YES! We received more chess pieces to stock our system and Murton and Patterson are big league ballplayers. Gallagher can be an innings eater that has good long range potential. Murton has hit well in the past and coupled with young stud Wes Bankston we have a couple of strong right handed youngsters which we haven't had for a while. But it is important to note that production in Iowa CIty or in the National League in general does not usually result in positve results in the far Superior American League. (see Jason Kendall). Only time will tell, but I like the fire of Gallagher for our staff! Patterson also gives us some security should Mark Ellis decide to take the money and run at the end of the season!
So keep the faith A's fans! This trade will not result in us falling off of the cliff and out of contention. There is more to come before the deadline and if we are still within striking distance of a wild card or even the division lead, Belly Beane has not had a problem in the past of bringing in a "rent a vet" to push us over the top! CHINS UP!
By the way, am I the only one that thinks Travis Buck will not be a River Cat for long?

Sorry Billy! Didn’t mean to call you “Belly” in my last sentence! That would only apply if you were severly overweight! And that is not the case! In fact, it looks like you’ve lost a few pounds!

With the god-awful line-up the A's are throwing out there,
partly due to injuries, might as well go for the future rather than tease us by staying close. Hard to see this deal help the A’sin the short-term. Beane might think he sees something special in Murton—kind of like that special love he had for Kielty.

OK
I move that we abandon any reference to the word “faith” with regard to Billy Beane, or indeed any sports figure. He’s not a religious icon.
While I grant you that a large part of the negativity is of the knee-jerk variety, some of it is from people (like me) who have actually analyzed the trade and concluded that it was a bad deal.

So basically we should just have faith in you I suppose
Get off your high horse man. You act as though the A’s did not analysis of their own before making this trade.
Maybe faith is the wrong word. I TRUST Billy to make a better decision than you EVER will. And I don’t care about how many BP, THT, PETCOA, GIMBLEDOPPLEDINK, BS you read. Billy is more informed and, more importantly, less emotional about these decisions than you are as a fan. On top of all that he has an excellent track record. Have Trust.

The funny thing is
PT agreed with your point that a lot of people are unthinkingly opposed to the deal, just objected to the use of the word faith (which, strictly speaking, is misused in this context).
If anyone but PT had raised the point (and I’m sure he wasn’t the only one thinking it), your response would be a CGV. I don’t see why you think you have a right to get personal on PT.

I wasn't aware...
...that the word “faith” was exclusive to religion.

I agree with Leo, disagree with Paul
Nothing wrong with the word “faith”. It doesn’t necessarily imply religion. Using the same logic, you could complain about using the word “believe”.

Wasn't saying it did
Just that Billy Beane isn’t some plaster saint, he’s a GM. A good one, in my opinion, but there is no reason to judge his trades based on “faith” or “belief” or “trust” when we can judge them on the hard info that we have in front of us to date. We—any of us, me, you, the guys who love it, the ones who hate it—might be wrong. In fact, given the disparate opinions, some WILL be wrong. That’s not a reason to abandon rational thought.
I hope like hell that I’m wrong and that Forst has unearthed another Jesus Guzman type in Patterson and the next Geovany Soto in Donaldson, but I obviously don’t THINK I’m wrong.

I think some of the angst around the trade
results from Gallagher and Murton being better than A’s fans think. The A’s targeted Gallagher for a reason and I suspect it’s that he has generally been underrated by scouts but is in fact a very solid starter in the making. Murton has hit major league pitching legitimately well whenever he’s actually been given a chance.

Trade Duke!!!
Ok ok, before you all start bashing me and calling me a idiot, hear me out. I was reading Ken Rosenthal’s article today over at foxsports, and he mentioned that the Dodgers had a deal in place for C.C, but it was vetoed by the owner of the club. The deal was Sabathia, third baseman Casey Blake, and infielder Jamey Carroll for Third baseman Andy LaRoche, right-hander Cory Wade, Class AA right-hander James McDonald and Class A catcher Carlos Santana. The deal fell threw cause the trade would have boosted the 2008 Dodgers payroll by more than $7.5 million and ownership wasnt having that. Its obvious the dodgers are looking for a good pitcher to team with Kershaw, Chad Billingsley, Hiroki Kuroda and Chan Ho Park, so why not offer Duke, who is cheap by the way, and maybe a prospect or two, or maybe murphy/hannahan for a similar package if not better. Maybe replace some players with other prospects of need. I think this will help both teams. We obviously need infield depth in our minors and some right handed power guys, and the dodgers need another starter to put them over the top. We could call up Gio to replace Duke or go with Sarloos/DiNardo. Thats my personal opinion/suggestion, let me know what you guys think. Ok let the flaming begin

I think LaRoche would be great to have
I don’t think the Dodgers would offer him to us for Duke (since he doesn’t have the pedigree CC has). If there’s a way to get him, I’d be very interested.
If Blanton for LaRoche is a reasonable framework I’d be interested in pursuing it.

Are they insane?
Their offense is terrible, so they want to trade their best hitting prospect. For pitching and two journeyman infielders.
Did LaRoche put a hex on Colletti’s wife or something? I can’t figure out why they hate him so much.

Duchscherer is looking for a 3-year deal to stay in Oakland
Which means they’d have to get a really huge haul for him to pass on signing him for 3 years. I have a feeling he will be undervalued by the rest of the league, and no offer will come in that will approach the value of signing him at 3/30 or whatever.

As a frame of reference, remember that we signed Loaiza
for three years, $21million when he was older and had a poorer track record. And salaries haven’t exactly been going down since then.

1 year is still an arb year, and he wants to stay in oakland.
remember, he’ll only have 1-year as a starter under his belt to begin negotiations…and a’s have exclusive rights so there won’t be competing bids. maybe 3/36?

Pay Duke
This team has gone away from the long ball hitters because we don’t have a hitters park and because of the pricetag. All we have is pitching and defense and hopefully someday alot of singles and doubles hitters with a little speed to play smallball. You have to pay SOMEBODY!!!! SOMEDAY!!!!! So pay the pitchers at least. Constantly playing musical chairs doesn’t draw the fair weather fan and we need them in order to fill the park. As for Billy – you gotta keep believin. He’s all we’ve got.

Believin in Billy Bean
It’s hard to question Billy’s moves, but the one I do question is why in the world didn’t we get rid of Joe(there goes another double) Blanton. This guy is the hate to say it our Barry Zito. Does any body feel confident when he is the starter? This man gives up hits in bunches it’s like he’s in a hurry to get taken out of the game, or he want’s to be first in line at the buffett. At least he won’t be faceing bad Vlad and the Angels.

Can this team bunt?
Watching the game tonight were down two runs Kurt Sazuki leads off the 7th inning with a double, and that’s where he was at the end of the inning. With no Frank Thomas, Eric Chavez , or Mike Sweeney we have very little if any pop in the line up. It’s got to become automatic with the “kids” we have to do the fundementals. Get em on get em over get em in that is the only way this team is going to be sucessful.
