Simmons continues to shine @ Midland
Player IP H R ER BB SO HR ERA
Simmons (W, 4-4) 8.0 2 0 0 0 11 0 3.28
At 108 pitches, they did not put him out for the 9th, but he had excellent command, throwing 74 strikes. Similar numbers to what the DUKE did at the pro level tonight (9 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K)
Our pitching in the minors continues to impress. I'm very excited about our 2009-2013 projections.

I remeber people hating
this pick when we drafted him. In Billy we Trust!
When will then be now? Soon.

Jeez
I think Midland must have the scariest rotation in the whole minor leagues. It might be a better rotation than some major league ones.

If only there was some way to balance that out
I know! We can trade for MORE pitchers

What Organization has alot of Offense in the Minors?
Seriously. Wouldn’t it make sense for the Best Minor League Pitching Organization to deal w/ the Best Minor League Hitting Organization? Kind of like the Delmon Young for Garza trade… or the Josh Hamilton for Vasquez trade. These types of deals usually happen during the offseason, so we’ll have to wait until teams have a chance to take an overall look at their organizations after the 2008 season.

It would, except they're in the same division...
and the second best hitting org, Atlanta, is about to go into belly-up firesale mode.

I thought Tampa Bay would be #1

For pitching, yes
For hitting, absolutely not. Got to give that to Texas right now.

How do we compare to Tampa regarding pitching in the minors right now?

Dan Meyer
Don’t forget Dan Meyer’s performance last night too…. (8 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 8 K)

YES
My brother was there, how could I forget?
Nice catch.
Hopefully one day he’ll make the Tim Hudson trade look acceptable, because right now that is Beanes worst trade IMO.

What is the scouting report on Simmons?
by Pucking Insane on Jul 9, 2008 12:30 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Pretty good-- he's not just a pure control artist
Low-mid 90s fastball, not great movement but pinpoint command. Solid changeup. Developing slider with the potential to be an out pitch at the MLB level. If the Ks mean he’s found the handle on the slider, he could be in Oakland as early as September.

From the other thread
I seem to have overestimated his velocity. Not an uncommon thing. Let’s call it low 90s. He seems to sit around 90 with the ability to touch the mid-90s for a putaway pitch.

That's exactly like Blanton

Not to nit pick
but we’ve only seen one place refer to even touching 93. Mid-90’s is too much to assert.
low 90’s may also be an overstatement…
sorry, but we may as well call it like it is

Sort of
Blanton has a mid-90s four-seam fastball that he rarely throws, because it’s straight as an arrow.
His 2-seamer is consistently 89-91.

BillMoresi, or anyone who was at the Rivercats game,
I’m curious about any specifics regarding how Meyer looked. I saw 109 pitches, 75 strikes (0 BBs) – very encouraging. Just wonder what, if anything, caused this change in his performance. It’s the first really good outing he’s had in a long time from the standpoint of both effectiveness AND total command.

A name from the past
“Cats’ starter Dan Meyer was perfect for four and one/third innings before Adam Melhuse singled off second baseman Michael Affronti’s glove. “
